A trial of Vader, had he survived
So, let's imagine that in an alternate timeline, Luke uses the force and manages to get enough time to help Vader survive after the destruction of the second death star, Vader would now be a POW, and just like in the Nuremberg trials, he'd have to go through that process himself.
What do you think would happen? Would he receive a death sentence? I think it's an interesting scenario just to put to scale the sheer magnitude of atrocities he did in those years
Beautiful "The myth of Sisyphus" edition...
I've had this book for around a year now and sometimes I like to just hold it, the paper quality, artwork and the weight feel just sooo good...it enhances the reading experience a lot
It's a masterpiece of an essay and such a beautiful edition, the editorial is in the cover, for those interested in acquiring one..."Editorial lucemar"
I can only feel myself when I'm alone and that drains me
To start, I'm a very sensitive person, not in the sense that any and everything people say or don't say to me hurts me or affects me, no, I mean sensitive as in an artistic, expressive and thoughtful way, I like painting, writing, reading and studying lots of stuff.
And to be able to do that the way I like it, I need to be alone for prolonged periods of time, just to navigate my thoughts and try to make them all come together, only then to be able to take action, and well, I enjoy that, it makes me feel good, it makes me feel myself, getting lost in thoughts and then working in something that I can feel and touch, is what fulfills me.
Yet, it is consuming to some degree, humans are social beings and as such, require interactions, but said interactions make me feel afraid, and uncomfortable, I can't seem to find people that I can relate to, and those that are like me, are also too afraid, ultimately they also hide under these layers of irony and sarcasm like I do...it's exhausting, the routine of waking up, faking and not feeling like I'm myself, until I'm alone and fall to isolation is not pleasant.
I crave friendship and connection, but I'm scared to find it, and I'm also very quiet and a listener by nature, so many find me boring, the thought of even showing *some* vulnerability feels nightmarish, since you can't fully know what the other part is going to do with it...I can't feel attachment in a natural or healthy way with even those who are close to me, when I lose them, I really don't mind, and just go on, and that drains me.
It's a spiral that goes downwards, I adore being alone, but it is consuming me, yet, I can't seem to find any real reason to open up to anyone (I have very strong trust issues).
The only thing that's keeping me sane, is art and my insatiable thirst for knowledge, it makes me feel really good, I just wish I had a partner in that quest (not in the romantic sense)
I just needed to vent and rant about this, it's better outwards than inwards, since, art is helpful but it can't fully heal anyone, even safe spaces can become cages when you don't take care of it
Overall, I feel fine and happy on most issues, Viktor Frankl's, Camus and Hesse's philosophy have helped me a lot...I just can't seem to find human connection
I used to be outgoing and cheerful, always introspective and calm but outgoing, now, that side of me died, and it hurts
(Sorry if it's too long, I needed this)
Happy July! Take a Jules Verne to celebrate
What's your favourite Jules Verne novel? Mine is "From the Earth to the Moon"
Why didn't Gilmour release "On an island" as a Pink Floyd record?
Seriously, both he and Wrigth had said in interviews that they wanted to do more stuff as Pink Floyd after the pulse tour, Wrigth explicitly said that he was just waiting for Gilmour's call to do so, yet he never received one
On an island is a fantastic record, and if you analyze it, it's a perfect follow up for the division bell, same tone, similar concepts, just in a much more mature and contemplative way, the lyrics feel as if the narrator had finally come to peace with himself (even if Polly's lyrics are not great, they're far better than in TDB)
So honestly, what was holding him back? I'm sure it would have been an even greater success as a Floyd record...and imagine it had even more Wrigth participation, as he was already a player for the solo record, it would have been one of Floyd's best albums to be honest...what a missed opportunity
The most amazing thing about astronomy
Imho, it's the fact that we, as small, insignificant primates, can understand this collosal universe, using only the power of our brains and cooperation.
It's the most amazing thing I can think of, how, despite the universe being so imponent, we can carry in our minds and decipher it's mathematical ways
Humanity is awesome, and my passion for this discipline, is just as large as the biggest of all galaxies
Neuroplasticity (Moheb Costandi, 2016)
For anyone interested in neuroscience, this introductory book will be of great usefulness for you
It's a masterpiece of scientific communication, it doesn't dumb down the concepts and explores them in depth, but, it's simple enough for anyone to understand.
It was published by Cambridge and the MIT press, so it shines a lot due to its background
For anyone interested in why you don't remember your childhood, or why do blind people develop a strong sense of hearing, this will satisfy your curiosity
I found it in my school's library, keep in mind I'm not a medicine student, but I'm interested in psychiatry and neurology, so naturally I took it home with me, fell in love with this book since

Let's share astronomy/physics books!
Hey fellow disciples of Urania, as the title says, I'd like to start a thread so we can share our favourite texts (can be science communication or more dense, professional texts) about this delightful science
From my own part, I'd recommend these three :
•Bajo el manto de Urania (Under Urania's veil), José María Maza Sancho : it's a short book that follows the biographies of 6 great astronomers of the scientific revolution period, it highlights the way they used maths to build their models and ends with a reflection of how science is made by building over what others have built before us, an amazing book for learning about the life and theories of some of the most important scientists in history
•Fósiles del cosmos (Cosmic fossils), Paula Jofré : It's about galaxies, their structures, behavior and the way they are studied, it focuses on the milky way and how scientists are working to discover how it was formed exactly, and how it interacts with satellite and neighboring galaxies, it also goes over the HR diagram and the GAIA project
•Fundamentals : ten keys to reality, Frank Wilczek : It's one of the most famous science communication books of this era, it was written by a Nobel prize winner so it's very high quality, it goes over the fundamental forces of physics, it's concise and provides good information, and it's amazing how he explains concepts that difficult in a simple way, really pleasant to read
Now it's your turn :) share your favourite books folks!
I can't help myself but cry at Luke's and Vader's last duel
Everything about it is just so astonishingly emotional, after re watching the Skywalker saga (hadn't done so in many many years), I couldn't help myself and began tearing up at that duel.
I grew up on Star Wars, I even have a funny anecdote from when I was a child where I was being disobedient and my father told me to behave and then said "because I am hour father" and I yelled "nooo" lmao, as a kid I was obsessed over the aliens, the lightsabers, everything about the visuals, now that I've grown a little older, I'm still in love with the franchise, but for different reasons, the emotions, the symbolism, the delightful world building and the space politics.
I watched the saga again with my mother, and as something to keep in mind, I had a difficult story with my father (happily we made amends and get along now) so naturally, Anakin's/Luke's story would hit me very hard.
And after watching all these stories unfold, the characters growing and their motivations changing... getting to that final duel felt so heavy, the way the silhouettes move, the way the crescendos in the music go, the absolute amazing acting and choreography, the symbolism of the colours and the position of Vader being the same as Dooku was when he was younger, the screenplay, the philosophy, everything about it was so...wow
And the message which many people look over, of accepting good and evil as they both are natural and must be accepted to live peacefully, the redemption and how we can all find good I'm ourselves even when we think there's no hope...the way a son grows and saves his father, and above all...hope, just...made me tear up
There's many many things I'd also like to say, but there's so many I can't even express them or get them out of my mouth, everything about that duel moves me to tears
Star Wars, although flawed, is just so beautiful, rewatching these movies at an older age makes you realize, that this saga is much more than just a space opera for kids
I love it...so much
Democrat party members sign a pledge to figth socialism
Just after the rise in popularity and relevance of left wing tendencies in the American Democrat party, the mainstream/traditional wing of the Democrat's sign a pledge to fight the working class
"Scratch a liberal, and a fascist bleeds"
Happy 114th anniversary to the Chilean Communist Party (PCCh)
(yes, I'm late, it was yesterday)

It was founded during a dark era for this nation, just as the workers movement was gaining weight, amidst the brutal repression and massacres of striking workers demanding better conditions by the parliamentary bourgeois regime and in the brink of WWI and the collapse of the previously mentioned Parliamentary government period (1891-1925), Luis Emilio Recabarren, a labour leader and intellectual created the "Partido obrero socialista" (POS) later reformed into the Chilean Communist party (PCCh)
Despite being outlawed, persecuted and almost exterminated during Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship, the communist party never gave up on their fight for a better nation, under the banner of the "Frente patriótico Manuel Rodríguez" (FPMR), they fought with guns and knives against the regime, and just as Robin Hood, they took goods from the rich so they could give to the poor (like in the Población la Victoria)
Now the PCCh is more active and alive than it has ever been in decades, being one of the biggest and most influential parties in the Chilean left, their struggle for worker's liberation lives on and continues to inspire many
Please mark prog rock as nsfw
I was on the train and when I listened to this I had to start furiously masturbating. Everyone else gave me strange looks and were saying things like “what the fuck” and “call the police”My headphones died and everyone around me listened to this music. Now there is a whole train of men masturbating together at this one track. This is all your fault, you could have prevented this if you had just tagged this genre as NSFW.

"Alturas de Machu Picchu" (Los Jaivas, 1981) appreciation post
It is the unbeatable latin American prog record, it has Nobel prize winner Pablo Neruda's poetry as lyrics and fusion of Andean music, rock and many more...it's a Magnum opus by all standards
Found this Nietzsche anthology bloody cheap
It's an anthology of his essential works (the one I'm most interested in, being "The origin of tragedy" as I have a big interest in aesthetics and the philosophy of art), found it at around 27 USD, for reference, in most book stores I go to, only "Thus spoke Zarathustra" is around the same price

It also includes some quotes and pictures of the author, I'm definitely framing one and using it as a decoration for my room
