Starting UPSC Prep Next Week (Next IAS)! What Should I Know?

Hello everyone!

I'll be joining Next IAS next week and this will be my first attempt at UPSC preparation.

I'd really appreciate any advice from those who've already been through the process, common mistakes to avoid (both in Delhi and during preparation), how to balance lectures with self-study, how many subjects to study in parallel, and the ideal timeline for completing the optional.

Also, if anyone is joining Next IAS from the 21st/23rd July batch, let's connect!

Need urgent legal guidance regarding dowry harassment and mental harassment

I need help from this community. This is about my sister.

She got married in April, and it's just the end of June, but things are already very bad at her in-laws' house.

Last month, her husband found some old photos/videos of her partying with her friends and drinking. After that, he started assuming that she has always been like this, used to go out with guys, had relationships in the past, and all that. None of this is based on any proof, just his assumptions.

My sister is well educated and was working before marriage. Before the wedding, they said she could continue her job, but after marriage they stopped allowing her to work.

After the photos incident, they called us and told us to take away her phone and buy her a new one. A few days later, we gave her one of our spare phones, but they didn't even allow her to keep it. First they said it's an old phone, buy a new one. Later we realized they just didn't want her to have any phone at all.

For the last two weeks, she has been calling us only through her husband's or mother-in-law's phone. She cries almost every day and says they keep taunting her over every small thing.

We gave around ₹10–12 lakhs worth of gold in the marriage. Even after that, her mother-in-law keeps saying that it's too little and that we didn't do anything in the marriage. That was my father's lifetime savings, and he did his best. Also, all the gold is with her mother-in-law now.

Before the marriage, they also wanted a car. They directly and indirectly asked for it. We couldn't afford it, so we said we would give ₹5 lakhs instead. Due to some bank issues, we couldn't arrange that amount. Since then, her mother-in-law keeps taunting my sister about it.

They don't even allow her to switch on the AC in this heat, saying, "Your father gave the AC, but who's going to pay the electricity bill?" Even if she asks for something from the market, they either refuse or don't bring it for her.

These may sound like small things, but together they are mentally torturing her. She cries every day. She also told us that her husband never supports her. Whenever she tells him about his mother's behavior, he goes and tells everything to his mother, and things become even worse for her.

We wanted her to record all this, but she doesn't even have a phone.

Yesterday, we told her to ask her husband clearly whether he wants to continue this marriage or not. He said no, he doesn't want to live with her.

We are bringing our sister back home tomorrow, and we can't just let this go.

I need guidance on what to do next. How do we proceed legally? How do we file a complaint for dowry harassment and mental harassment? Is our case strong even if we don't have recordings? Most of what we have are her calls to us and everything that has happened over the last two months.

Also, what usually happens after an FIR is registered? We have never been through anything like this, so any genuine advice would really help.

Thank you.

Need legal advice: Sister facing dowry harassment and mental torture within 2 months of marriage

Book store to buy cat coaching material

I'm planning to prepare for CAT and I'm travelling to Delhi today to buy old coaching material from TIME/IMS. If anyone knows where I can get second-hand material, please let me know in the comments. It would save me from wasting time roaming around. Thanks!

Work Experience Verification for Small Companies Without PF

I joined a company this month, but it's a very small firm and they don't provide PF. I'm a bit confused about how IIMs and other B-schools verify work experience in such cases.

I checked online and found that verification is usually done through Joining letter, salary slips, bank statements, and PF records. Since I won't have PF, will salary slips and bank statements be enough?

Has anyone here worked at a small company without PF and successfully claimed work experience during admissions? I'd really appreciate any insights. Thanks!

Is it worth giving a shot? Please don't ignore

I'm planning to prepare for CAT. My profile is 7/6/8 (GEM) with no work experience as of now, although I might start a job next month, which could help for XAT/IMT/MDI applications.

The problem is that whenever I check profile predictors like Vercel, almost all the IIMs show 100 percentile or even 101% required, which basically feels impossible.

So realistically, what are my chances of getting into a good Tier 1.5 or Tier 2 B-school? Is it actually worth putting in all the effort for CAT with this profile, or should I focus more on exams like XAT, SNAP, NMAT, etc.?

I haven't been able to find much information from people with a similar profile, so I'd really appreciate any insights. Thanks!

Is traffic law enforcement in Hyderabad really this weak?

I came to Hyderabad 2 days ago, and during the rain there was a huge traffic jam. I didn't see any traffic police managing it, and I even saw some officers scrolling on their phones.

The next day, I booked a Rapido. The rider wasn't wearing a helmet and didn't provide one to me either. In Delhi, pillion helmets are mandatory and you can get fined for not wearing one.

That same day, I took 2 Rapidos and 1 auto. All three drove on the wrong side at some point and ignored basic traffic rules. It honestly feels like many people aren't afraid of traffic laws, cameras, or challans here.

Mumbai Airport Transfer: T2 to T1 in 2h 15m Layover, Will I Make It?

Delhi–Mumbai flight lands at T2 and my Mumbai–Hyderabad flight departs from T1. I have a 2h 15m layover and it's my first time at Mumbai Airport.

What's the fastest way to get from T2 to T1? Is there a shuttle, and is 2h 15m enough if my first flight lands on time?

Thanks! 🙏✈️

Need help: Airport to Gachibowli and luggage storage options

Coming to Hyderabad for the first time on 9th June.

Need to reach Gachibowli from the airport. What's the best option? Are there any direct buses, and where do I get the ticket?

Also, I'll check out of my hotel on 10th morning, have some work in the afternoon, and will leave for Bangalore in the evening. Any place around Gachibowli where I can keep my luggage for a few hours after checkout?

Thanks!

Anyone attending the MS interviews at IIITH? How are you planning your stay in Hyderabad?

I’m thinking of booking a hostel near the campus. If anyone has found good hostels, PGs, or any affordable alternatives nearby, please let me know in the comments or DM.

I’ll be travelling from Delhi on 9th June.

CAT Offline Coaching in Delhi (TIME vs IMS) + Doubts About Low Profile & Work Ex Verification

Planning to take offline coaching in Delhi for CAT prep and I’m confused between TIME and IMS. If anyone has studied there, please share your experience regarding faculty, mocks, doubt support, and overall environment.

My profile:

10th/12th/Grad: 7/6/8 GEN Engineer

Work ex: ~12 months

I’m also worried whether it’s worth appearing for CAT with this profile since my 10th and 12th scores are low. Do tier 1/tier 1.5 colleges reject profiles like this directly? Anyone with a similar profile who converted good colleges, please share your experience.

Also, I previously worked in Bangalore and now I’m working in a small company near my home. How do IIMs and other colleges verify work experience? Through salary slips, bank statements, offer letters, experience letters, or something else? Sometimes salary is paid in cash, so a bit confused about that.

Would really appreciate honest advice.

Just gave it, and honestly it didn’t feel “easy” at all.

The paper was quite lengthy, with difficulty ranging from moderate to hard. A few questions also had tricky wording that could easily confuse you if you weren’t careful.

Overall, the biggest issue wasn’t just difficulty, it was the time pressure due to the length.
