[ON] COI Insured section names my corporation o/b my name

I newly incorporated in Ontario and the corporation is just myself as the director and I will be doing consulting. I purchased general and professional liability insurance and received my COI today. Under Insured, the COI names my corporation on the first line but says o/b my name on the line below. Can anyone tell me what this o/b means? Is it of any significance? Thanks. The broker confirmed during the application that my corporation is what is insured.

How to deduct this business expense?

I bought a laptop for my business for $249.99 plus tax and the price included 1 year subscription to office 365, which has a value of $115.00 based on Microsoft's website. They are not itemized in the invoice from the seller which says laptop and 1 year office 365. Do I deduct the entire cost of the laptop as a capex expense or do I separate them given that I know how much the subscription costs ($134.99 capex for laptop and $115 for office subscription)? Thanks.

Halal Loans in Gold and Silver

I am making this post to float the idea of giving out 0% interest loans in gold and silver rather than in fiat currencies, thus hedging against inflation and negating the need to charge interest. The people of the cave slept 309 years and when the woke up their silver coins could still buy them food in the city. This idea is a pure loan play without any participation in the business and risk and would likely apply more at the personal level.

Insights on property around Yerevan

Hi,

I am looking to buy a rental apartment (preconstruction) in the Yerevan area. Prices in the central part of the city are out of my reach but it seems there are some decent deals on the outskirts, particularly Kasakh, Zovuni-Kanakeravan and Nor Hachn. Are these areas viable to live in if someone worked in Yerevan and are they expected to grow in the future (5-10 years)? Thanks.

To Arabic Speaking Muslims living in the West

How comfortable are you marrying another Muslim who does not know Arabic knowing that you will not be able to maintain a strict Arabic language setting at home in order to pass down Arabic to your children?

TFSA/RRSP/RDSP/RESP

I am 39 years old and for the last few years I've been putting money in my TFSA and have reached a salary over 100k that I am thinking whether it's worth diversifying my investment strategy. Currently my TFSA contribution room is at around 70% and I am considering the following options. I am not planning on buying a home. My marginal tax rate is 43%. I have 2 kids ages 6 & 9. I have an RDSP with a 100% grant that matches up to $1,000 per year.

Option 1: Keep putting money in my TFSA and $1,000 per year into my RDSP.

Option 2: Put my some money in my RRSP to an amount that gives me $1,000 in tax refund and invest that in my RDSP. Invest the rest in the TFSA.

Option 3: Put more money in my RRSP to an amount that gives me $3,500 in tax refund and invest $1,000 of that in my RDSP and the remaining $2,500 in an RESP. Invest what remains from the original amount in the TFSA, which will be less than Option 2.

Option 4: Go all in into my RRSP and split the refund between RDSP, RESP and TFSA.

Option 5: I am open to other suggestions. Thanks.

Residency/Retirement in Armenia

Hi,

This is going to be a longer post so I would like to thank you in advance for taking the time to read and provide your feedback.

My wife and I are in our late thirties. We are both Canadian citizens living in Canada. My wife is originally Palestinian (been in Canada from age 6 years old) and I am of Lebanese origin (been in Canada from age 20) and we are looking for a place to call our second home, particularly for retirement, given the circumstances in our native countries. We are both Muslim (my wife wears the headscarf) but given our ethnic and cultural background we are comfortable living in a culturally conservative/religious/non-western Christian community. We want to be as close to our home countries as possible (physically and culturally) without being bombed. I have many close friends from various Christian backgrounds (particularly Orthodox) and we get along very well.

I wanted to get the Armenian community's thoughts if we were to live in Armenia sometime in the mid-late future how easy would it be for us to integrate and what can we expect in terms of people's interactions with us. I had a few Armenian friends in university back in Lebanon and all I got was good vibes so not sure if it would be the same if we were to live in Armenia.

Thank you.

Deemed Disposition of Overseas Property

Hi all,

My dad bought a piece of land outside Canada back in 2002 and at the time he was not a resident, citizen or PR of Canada. He immigrated to Canada in 2023 which triggered a deemed disposition at the time he came to Canada. He is looking to sell the land soon and bring the money to Canada. We don't expect there to be a capital gains tax because the land has not gained in value since 2023 (prolly lost value during that time) and are getting our ducks in a row for the CRA. We are thinking of obtaining two estimates from two real estate agents showing the value of the land in 2023 and obviously the deed for sale when we sell it this year. Anyone here care to share their thoughts about what could the CRA also ask for the calculate the capital gains tax, if any?

Thanks.

Asbestos/Suspect Asbestos Materials Photos

Hi everyone,

I'm preparing a presentation on asbestos-containing materials and would appreciate the community's help in providing photographs of asbestos materials that we don't run into on a regular basis. I don't need to know the asbestos content, just photos for my presentation. Thanks.

My parents are in a bit of a unique situation and would appreciate the community's advice as to how they could proceed.

Both my parents immigrated to Canada in 2005. My mom stayed in Canada and my dad left for work. My dad lost his PR in 2010 and between 2010 and 2022 he would visit Canada frequently under a visitor visa. In 2022 my mom sponsored him and he returned to Canada as PR and has lived here since. 3 years after landing in Canada, he applied and got approved for ODSP under the prescribed class since he was 65 and has resided in Canada for less than 10 years and therefore not eligible for OAS. He was told to apply to OAS and obtain a rejection letter from them. We applied for OAS truthfully stating that he has lived in Canada 2022 and the agent handling his OAS case told him she can approve him for OAS going back to 2005 if he can submit proof of ties to Canada, which we found perplexing. We are able to provide some of the documents and likely get approved for OAS which is not something we were expecting.

We are unsure how to proceed from here. Do we submit our documents to OAS from 2005 in which case if they get approved I assume there will be ODSP money we have to give back OR do we simply tell OAS that my dad did not reside in Canada and should not be eligible?

Note: My mom got approved for OAS/GIS benefits as of May 2026 so we are anticipating clawbacks to their ODSP payments.

Thank you.
