Okay, so here are a few words about what is probably currently the most expensive “off-the-shelf” IEM system in the world (leaving the 10th Anniversary Edition aside).

The stock Fugaku comes with its own amplifier, which you can see on the left side of the picture. Since it is purely an amplifier, it obviously needs to be fed by another source. In my case, that role is handled by my iBasso DX340Max TI via its balanced line-out. It also features a genuinely excellent DAC that could easily hold its own as a desktop DAC.

As for tips, you can use pretty much any standard IEM tips. I went with the Azla Xelastec 2. The system was privately loaned to me, and I have roughly a week to listen to it extensively. For comparison, I’ll be using my FiR Audio Redux6 CIEM.

Even the very first notes are crazy. I thought there wasn’t much more detail left to uncover, but I was wrong. What the Fugaku manages to extract on top of that is absolutely insane. It really hits hard, and you can definitely hear the step up from the FiR to a system that costs five times as much—even though, of course, it isn’t five times better.

Still, it’s impressive just how extremely controlled yet full-bodied everything sounds. In the treble, it always comes sooooooo close to becoming unpleasantly sibilant, but it simply never crosses that line—it just constantly tickles the edge of it. It’s actually kind of fascinating to experience, especially since I’m quite sensitive to sibilance.

The Fugaku has SIGNIFICANTLY more treble sparkle than the FiR, resulting in more shine and more of those “wow” moments. However, the treble always remains nicely controlled and never becomes annoying.

The mids are very smooth and fit beautifully into the slight V-shaped tuning. Vocals sound natural and intimate. However, this is one area where I occasionally prefer the FiR. It sometimes gives me more goosebumps when vocals come really close to the ear and have more body and soul. In comparison, the Fugaku can sound slightly more sterile—or perhaps overly controlled.

The bass is in a league of its own. Just as the Abyss 1266 is THE bass headphone in the headphone world, the Fugaku might very well be its equivalent among IEMs. That said, you shouldn’t forget that FiR already does an outstanding job with its Kinetic Bass technology.

But the Fugaku’s bass feels like it reaches deeper, is more precise, and has more volume. So, all three boxes are checked for the Fugaku.

Soundstage has always been somewhat difficult for me to evaluate properly. It is beautifully large, and I’ll leave it at that. I don’t hear a particularly huge difference compared to the FiR in that regard.

BUT the Fugaku does layering better. Everything is separated even more cleanly, and individual elements are resolved more clearly. That probably also comes, at least in part, from its superior detail retrieval.

Comfort: I don’t think I need to say much here. NOTHING beats a CIEM when it comes to comfort—except another CIEM. And the Fugaku is no different in that respect.

However, compared to other UIEMs, it is definitely comfortable, and the ear hooks don’t bother me at all. Still, I think it will be the same as with all UIEMs for me: there’s no way I could listen continuously for more than two to three hours.

All in all: Is the Fugaku the best IEM I’ve ever had the chance to hear? Yes!

Is it the best in every single category? No!

Is it worth its €17,000!!!! MSRP? Only if money genuinely doesn’t matter. Otherwise, I would choose a €2,000 CIEM any day of the week. (For comparison, my Redux6 cost around €3,500.)

So, what is the Fugaku for?

It’s not something you use for casual background listening at the office. The Fugaku is something you celebrate. You make yourself a nice drink, make sure you have plenty of uninterrupted time, find an extremely comfortable place to relax—a lounge chair, for example—close your eyes, and simply disappear into the music.

That would be my ideal scenario for it.

That said, I’m still more than happy with my FiRs, and I won’t be buying the Fugaku. But I’m incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to experience it.

It really is an amazing piece of gear—regardless of the price, which, in my opinion, is more symbolic than anything else.

Case: custom one by Fatty Hors Leather with a lot of features / Case also for the DAP itself in the same color and without magnets. Case can store spare ear tips above the DAP. Cable is secured by the large removbable role in the midle. A little storing place on the right side to store the USB-C to 12V trigger adapter, a little bruch and leaning loop tool. It also has a very nice kickstand. |

I can't be happier. What a perfect setup to transport and put on the table. Cable can always be connrected to the DAP and DAP can stay in the large case.

Both are crazy good. Got the RX6 something like 2 weeks ago. The RN6 I own roughly 6 months now. Here and there I had some issues with sibilance at the RN6. The RX6 is slightly darker with less sparkle but also a bit less treble juice and layering power.

Also upgraded from HiBy R8ii to iBasso DX340Max TI. Now I have to decide which one to keep. :D Currently I like the RX6 a notch more but maybe its only the new toy syndrome.

What would you keep?

I might finished my long 5 year headphone and stuff journey after I received my Avija couple of days ago. It was a very fun way and I never thought being in a situation owning such a highend setup for myself. It got one of my main hobbies and every step was so fun but now I think I’m done.

Sold the ModHouse Tungsten, but the new owner didnt want that beautiful grills. So I offer them now. If I'm not wrong there are only very few of them worldwide (5 or so)

first I do not get any money for following words. To make that clear!

I'm in the IEM game for 6 months now after being a headphone guy 5 years straight. I tried so many ear tips in the past (10 to 15 different). And none of them were perfect. I stuck with Azla Max, which were pretty fine. But the seal was not perfect and I needed to replace them in my ears regulary.

Then I wanted to try Eletech Baroques and Dunu S&S and saw the Tangzu as offer and also ordered these! That was my best decision for lEMs yet. I also thought of getting CIEMs because I was never happy with the fit and seal.

But now... the search is done and I totally stay at UIEMs. The Tangzu have a perfect fit and seal. They dont hurt even after 2 hours straight listening time. The base and music sounds full and added some musicality to it.

Right now I recommended them to 5 different persons and for all of them, these are the best or at least one of the best! If you are also in the situation not finding good tips, give them a try. Also 10 bucks for 3 different sizes (pairs) is more then fair. These 10 bucks saved my IEM journey.

Mit Kind und Job habe ich meine Hobbies entrsprechend angepasst und sohin verschoben, dass ich sie auch während der Arbeit ausführen kann. Dazu gehört neben mechanischen Tastaturen auch der Genuss von Musik im bestmöglichen Wege.

Seit 4 Jahren jetzt habe ich mehr oder weniger dahingearbeitet und habe mir nun kurz vor meinem 40. Geburtstag wohl was absolut Feines gönnen können. Einen Bandoss Avija. Der wurde sogar extra für mich optisch so angepasst, dass er perfekt zu meinem Kopfhörer-Verstärker passt. Und jetzt sich hier im HomeOffice, lese technische Dokumente und habe dabei diesen Traum von Kopfhörer auf dem Kopf und komme aus dem Grinsen nicht mehr raus.

Manchmal kann auch ein trister Arbeitstag auch einfach nur toll sein :D
