What are things you wish you would’ve known as a new grad ER nurse?
I’ll take all tips, tricks, advice. I wanna hear it all.

I’m a new grad in the ER still on orientation and I’ve been semi comfortable with everything except the charting. Like charting assessments, doing the arrival note, that kind of stuff. I’m constantly worried I’m going to put the wrong thing down. When we’re getting report from EMS or asking the patient why they came in, I feel like I’m forgetting details that should go in the note. I’m also verifying the majority of my charting with my preceptor which I’m sure is a little annoying.
I started out at $33/hr as a new grad.
Xray pays their new grads $27/hr
CT pays $33/hr
MRI pays $36/hr
Sono/Nuc Med pays $39/hr
It’s just insane to think about. Makes me think I went into the wrong field
No hate towards my radiology friends. You all do great jobs
I have this friend who’s very affectionate at times. Says I’m one of his best friends, tells me he loves me, hugs me, says I’m one of just a handful of people he genuinely trusts. We’ve had a lot of personal and serious conversations. That kind of stuff. He always says exactly the right thing to make me appreciate the friendship and to make me feel appreciated in the friendship.
The thing is, he’s really bad about showing it. And he’s gotten worse at showing it the past couple of weeks. His actions don’t always align with the things he says. He’ll take hours to respond to me and then say he was busy or he was sleeping even when I can see him active on social media. His responses have also gotten drier than they used to be. He also stopped asking me to hang out as much. We used to hang out 2-3 times a week and now I’m lucky if we hang out once a week. And yet he always seems to have time to hang out with his other friends. It didn’t used to be like this. We used to be really close and now he doesn’t seem to be as interested in the friendship. We went to a bar a while back and he sat on his phone texting someone else half the time. While his words make me feel good about the friendship, his actions seem to do the opposite.
This is just starting to feel like all my previous friendships before they ended. Drier conversations, longer response times, less frequent hangouts, that kind of stuff. And yet he consistently says things that make me feel like it’s a good friendship. I’m really not sure anymore. I feel like I’m getting a lot of mixed signals and I’m not even sure he wants to be friends anymore.
I really don’t know whether or not I should keep trying to put effort into this friendship. Thoughts?
I just started as an ED nurse and several people I’ve talked to have said the only way to make good money in nursing is to job hop every few years. The thing is, I’m happy at the hospital I work at. I’ve been here for 3 years in various roles and I really don’t want to go anywhere else.
One nurse I talked to said she was making almost $60 an hour and that’s after job hopping 3-4 times. I just started out at $33. We get nearly raises but it’s only about a dollar, if that.
Since I was a kid anytime I get water in my ears, it’s painful. I don’t know why. The water then gets stuck and it takes a day or two to come out.
I want to be able to jump into the pool and go underwater and do everything my friends are doing but it hurts me to do it. I’ve tried silicone ear plugs but they usually leak and I also feel like they make me look stupid since no one else is wearing them.
Any advice?
I recently tried my friend’s 9mm 1911 (unsure what brand it was) and I really enjoyed using it. I’ve been looking at getting my first gun (mostly for home defense and range shooting) and was looking at getting a 1911 Operator AOS. I’d like to eventually put a red dot and a flash light on it and this would allow me to do both. And like I said, I enjoyed using my friend’s so I’d like to get my own.
Thoughts?
I’m starting in the ER as a new grad nurse in August. It’s a level 1 trauma center that averages about 200-300 patients a day. I’ve been a tech in the department for about a year now. I’ll take any tips I can get.
I take the nclex tomorrow. I took the readiness exam this weekend. Finished in 100 questions with a 73% and a very high chance of passing. I’m just curious if anyone else took it and how accurate it is. Thanks
I have a discover it chrome card and wanted to switch the design to the Blackhawks one. When I go into the app to switch it, it’s not on there. Is it no longer available or do I just not have the right card for it?
I take the nclex in 3 days but I’ve noticed the more I study the less prepared I feel. I’ve been doing practice questions on ATI Boardvitals, reviewing my Saunders textbook and I listened to part of the mark k lecture 12. The more questions I do, the less prepared I feel. All these are doing are making me feel like I don’t know enough to pass.
I take my nclex Monday. I did two ATI comprehensive predictors in February and April, and got a 97% and then a 95% chance of passing my first attempt. Since I graduated last month, I’ve only done about 300 board vitals questions.
One of them was a CAT exam that I got 69 percentile of moderate difficulty band. The rest of my questions have just been regular tests, in which I’m getting about 60-70% on. I know boardvitals is supposedly harder and doesn’t give you partial credit on SATA questions, so part of me is thinking I’ll be okay.
Besides that, I’ve got a Saunders textbook I’ve been reviewing topics with and I listened to part of Mark K lecture 12. I plan to finish it before I test on Monday. Besides that, I’ll probably do one more CAT exam and about 150-200 more questions, which will put me at about 600.
What are your thoughts? I’m sure you all know how the anxiety feels so I won’t even get into that. Obviously you can’t predict if I’ll pass, I’m just wondering if you guys think I’d be safe to test on Monday.
I take the nclex next week and I’ve barely studied. I did an ATI comprehensive predictor in May and it said I had a 95% chance of passing my first attempt, but I’ve been so burnt out I’ve barely studied.
I’ve done about 100 boardvitals questions and that’s it. I know I need to study more, but it’s definitely been a struggle. I’m planning on doing more before then I’m just curious if it’s even worth using boardvitals.
Thoughts?
I’m taking the nclex in less than 2 weeks. I tried using Saunders and HESI but I just couldn’t get into it for some reason. I started using board vitals through ATI and that seems to be working a little better for me. I took 2 ATI comprehensive predictors and got a 97% and a 95% probability of passing, I’ve just been stressed out because I graduated almost a month ago and I’ve only done a total of 92 practice questions.
I definitely need to study more than I’ve been but I’ve been so burnt out that I haven’t been able to bring myself to.
I graduated college about 12 hours ago. My roommate moved out almost immediately after and all of my friends moved away too. For the last 8 hours I’ve been crying almost nonstop except when I fell asleep for about 1.5 hours. I just went from having people over almost every day and having a roommate living with me to being completely alone. All I keep thinking about is the memories I’ve made and how I’m never gonna be able to do those things again. This was the first time in my life living away from my parents and it was also the first time in my life I’ve had friends that I was this close to. I abruptly lost them all at once and now I just can’t stop crying.
I’m supposed to be happy right now and I’m not. Instead I’ve been sitting in my room all alone crying for hours. I’ve tried distracting myself with things I normally enjoy doing but those things end up reminding me of my friends and I start crying again. I even door dashed food and just seeing the address on DoorDash made me cry because I’m going to be moving out next week. I don’t know what to do.
I never had close friends in high school. I had people I would talk to at school, but not really people I’d consider friends. For the first time in my life, I’ve had this group of friends that have meant a lot to me. I graduated from college today and I’ve just been upset ever since. They’ve already moved all of their stuff out and are on their ways back home. My roommate included. I’m just sitting in our apartment by myself, crying because I probably won’t see most of them again. How do I move past this? I feel like I’ve got no one left but my parents now. I feel like my life just abruptly ended and left no crumbs remaining.
