fiction for an art history major
hi all, i recently read My Name Is Red by Orhan Pamuk and absolutely loved it. i was completely engrossed, and it introduced me to a style i had never known about (Ottoman miniature illustrations). i’m definitely going back to Pamuk, his style is great when you don’t want to read mindlessly but also want to avoid having to re-read every other sentence 4 times.
i’m looking for more novels that center art or art history in some fashion. thanks so much!
How exactly do you go about publishing research as an undergrad?
Hi all, I apologize if this isn’t the right sub. I’m an AH major about to be in my junior year and I really want to improve my research skills and eventually publish papers. If I’m understanding correctly, the process is research -> write paper -> format to their requirements and submit to relevant journal? Is this something I can do mainly independently? I’m currently taking online classes and am far from my college’s campus so it’s a bit tricky getting professor/faculty input on this beyond an email chain. My goal in doing this is, of course, to improve my research skills, but to also grow my application so I can hopefully stand out as an applicant in the museum field. Thanks so much for the help
Books on Islamic/Arab art?
Hi all, I’m looking for books on Islamic and Arab art history. It’s the specialization I want to pursue when I get to undergrad. I have a few intros to the Western canon (The Story of Art), but I really want to know more about Islamic/Arab art, and I’m not sure where to start when it comes to books. Thanks!
Connection works on my phone but not my laptop?
Hi all, basically the title. The PS app worked on my phone, but I couldn’t figure out how to use the keyboard, so I tried to switch to my laptop but I’m getting the error code 8801330d. I also checked and the NAT type on the remote play is 3 while my PS5 is 2. How can I fix this? And if it’s too complicated or not possible for someone tech illiterate like me, how can I make it so I can use the keyboard on the app lol?
How to prepare for art history post-grad as a freshman in college?
Hi, I want to eventually get a PhD in art history but I don’t know where to start in doing extracurriculars/getting work experience to prepare. I live in the suburbs where there aren’t many galleries/museums that close by, and it’s hard to find volunteer opportunities in the art history world. I know you have to learn multiple languages, so I’m studying german this year and french soon in the future, but what else is good to get my foot in the door in this subject? Thanks so much for the help
Books that make you feel a specific kind of comfortable misery and helplessness?
I'm going to try and describe this as best I can and it might be a stretch. You know when something happens to you, it could be anything, but there's nothing you can really do to fix the problem, so you just sit in the sadness and misery? But it's comfortable and almost cathartic to sink into that misery, like how it feels good to cry? Maybe self-pitying is the word? I want a book that evokes that feeling, or anything similar. One where you feel misery for the story or the characters, but it feels soothing and you don't really want to do anything to feel better
me replying immediately to the first comment i get so readers know im an author that responds
anyone else feel like cutting is considered“corny” ?
i’m not sure a better word for it, but it goes back to “depressed emo teen cuts for attention” stereotypes and “wrist check” jokes. i feel like people look at my scars and think im a joke or an “””attention seeker””” (which i hate that insult, it’s so ridiculous and stupid because yeah, we probably Should be giving the person who’s resorting to harming themselves some kind of sympathy). im also about to turn 20 and it seems like the act is associated with dramatic and hormonal teenagers, and not people who are suffering with real trauma and mental illness. i dont know, its almost like it’s cringe to be a cutter lol. makes no sense to me
4ish years clean. no one in my life knows i have these, which is both isolating and kind of exciting
sometimes i wonder what my friends would think if they saw them. they aren’t “as bad” as others, and cutting isn’t as uncommon as some would think, so maybe they wouldn’t care. but it’s still a weird kind of exciting to have a secret like this, i can’t really explain it. i felt that way when i was actively cutting and i still feel it now. even after 4 years, i still haven’t worked up the courage to wear tank tops in public, and i’m not sure i ever will.
Been feeling it again, don't know how to bounce back.
Due to recent happenings, I've felt so, so emotionally dysregulated. Every small thing makes me angry, and the way I've always coped has been self-harm. Hitting myself, biting myself, pulling my hair, scratching my face, I default to all of these when I get frustrated, and it's just been happening more and more. I haven't gone as far as cutting again, but it's seriously tempting. I'm afraid to pick up a razor to shave because I don't think I can trust myself anymore.
I've been clean from cutting for about 4-5 years, and honestly... I have no idea how I stopped. I just kinda did. I was in my teens, so since then I've grown less hormonal, my life isn't as directionless, and I got out of a bad family situation. So I guess I just 'got better' and the urge went away. But I never really learned proper ways to cope, so I'm at a loss of what to do now.
I've tried meditating and journaling, two things that I've seen suggested as outlets for anger or frustration, but I don't feel any changes after about 2 weeks. I'll stick with it but I don't know... I'm looking for any advice on what you guys do in situations like this. Thanks.
Spring dorming?
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I plan to transfer to UF for the spring term and was wondering what the housing situation would look like.
I emailed the house dept. and they said to email again in late fall to be put on the waiting list, but that the dorms are usually full because of fall students staying through the spring term. Makes sense, but like, will dorming be possible for me? When’s the best time to email back to ensure I’m as early in the waiting list as possible?
