BOTW replay

For those who replayed. How did you make it feel fresh? When I first played it I spent 500+ hours just walking around, exploring every nook and cranny. I assume that might feel boring the second time, any thoughts?

The Rolex Game isn’t hard…

2 parts to this. And I say all this as a middle class person, not a rich person. I say this as someone who owns Rolex but has never asked for any high demand GMT (but was offered a 36 land dweller as my third watch but declined). I live in LA, maybe the AD game is vastly different here.

First part is that Rolex is a HIGH end luxury brand. They are not supposed to cater to the general public, that is the literal point of being a high end brand. The only models that are unattainable are the ones the masses can afford and thus the ones they ask for. This means supply is lower than demand for those few steel watches (or their VIP pieces), because middle class people are trying to have a piece of a brand they really shouldn’t have at their level of wealth.

But if you are wealthy and are willing and interested in exploring their full catalogue (which has pieces that kick the shit out of an ugly Pepsi) being a Rolex customer is easy. You walk in, have a good conversation, ask for a day date and you’ll have it in short order. Then ask for a gold Daytona or gold 1908 oysterflex Daytona (which again kick the shit out of the steel GMTs) and I promise you’ll get it. Then once you’re established as a real customer interested in their full catalogue, sure ask for the steel models that EVERYONE is asking for.

Second part is that the Rolex game is wayyyyyy more palatable that the game for other high end brands. Thank your lucky stars you don’t like Hermes hand bags. To get a Birkin, you need to spend as much as the bag costs in other NON BAG goods. So while Rolex lets you build up to a high demand watch via purchasing other watches, Hermes makes you build up to their high demand bags by spending 20k in plates, scarves, shoes, jewelry before getting that allocation. At least at the end of the Rolex journey you have beautiful watches to show for it, not fucking dishware.

Considering Law School

I am 40, I worked 6 years in banking out of USC (3.9 gpa) then got burned out and have just kind of bounced around in various finance, brand and marketing jobs. Got my MBA from UT in 2019.

But I make around 160k all in and just don’t like what I do. Law seems appealing because the older you get the more “seasoned” and respected it seems you will become in a room, (which in my perspective means you can work into your 70s in law), where in the world I work in now you will eventually look like grampa post 60, plus my top end salary will be around 250 in the next 5-6 years. AI is also a threat to my job.

I have 170k in loans from b-school. If I could get into UCLA (I live in socal and can’t move) below sticker, is there a path in law aside from biglaw where you see this as a wise long term financial decision? I wouldn’t want to work 50+ hours for more than a few years post school, and eventually settle into a 40 hour type job.

Happy to answer follow up questions if more context is needed.

Birkin 35 or 40 for me?

Would love opinions on whether one looks substantially better than the other. Any thoughts appreciated! FYI I’m not interested in these exact bags, this is just for sizing. Thanks!

Preloved Birkin

For anyone who has purchased a preloved Birkin 35, what are things to look for in terms of the quality of the bag to ensure you get the freshest possible bag? Sometimes it seems hard to tell from pictures.

I am looking at Fashionphile and Madison Avenue Couture as the main places to buy from. I just don’t want to end up with a wrinkled, creased bag. I get that even if I bought a new one they would eventually become that, but I want the bag to be as structured as possible. Thanks!

Hermes 40 Allocation

Hi everyone! I am a male, just turned 40. I am interviewing for a job that would require me to return to an office (and travel) after almost 7 years of working from home. I want a daily work bag, which I would love to be a Birkin 40, since I am a somewhat bigger guy at 6’2 210.

I went into the store for the first time and got an SA to help me. I explained what I was looking for and the use case and she’s like ya for your size and needs, a 40 is definitely what would work best.

She said it’s a hard bag to come by but asked if I wanted to create a wishlist and add the bag, asked what colors I would be open to, and said she registered my wishlist. There was no talk of quotas, prespend, anything like that.

I also looked at the groomer bag which I think would work well as a pool/beach/errand bag so I’ll likely get that next weekend, I bought a new cologne and a belt cuz I really loved them.

My questions are:

  1. does this sound like a standard first interaction? Are the prespend expectations usually more concretely discussed?

  2. Is there a chance that because I’m a male and asking for a less desired QB, that they could just get it for me based on how it makes the most practice sense for my needs of their bag offerings?

  3. going forward how do I play this? I kinda want to not call attention to the concept of prespend. I’d like to see if there is a route to side step it given maybe I’m a less typical client profile, and the ask is tied to a life milestone and practical work use case. or is that simply my wishful thinking?

Thanks!
