Android stereo for S trim, 3D printable brackets available (+ show setup)

For the past 7 years I've just been using a standard single-DIN Kenwood head unit and was perfectly happy with it, but okay maybe it's time I upgraded. These generic Android radios are cheap and readily available nowadays, and do the job well enough if you just want an CarPlay/Android Auto upgrade.

I designed some brackets to simply clamp the head unit to the bezel, rather than faffing around with trying to use the OEM mounting brackets. For other S owners who have a 3D printer or know somebody with one, I uploaded them here: Thingiverse

I specifically went with a quite-expensive Eonon unit because I wanted the HDMI output for mirroring to the rear screen, and onboard adjustments for my giant sound system like filters and time alignment. The vast majority of people won't care about all these, and can just buy a basic 9" unit kit like this one: Amazon.com

The unit will come screwed to the Sentra bezel adapter with 4 screws, just remove them to extract the unit and then affix using the 3D printed brackets. I recommend buying the Sentra kit as it comes with the ready-made wiring harness and antenna adapter that is compatible with the Leaf, which will also work to retain steering wheel audio controls (they may need to be programmed in the stereo's settings).

For SV/SL owners with factory navigation, I'm currently working on figuring out if any commercially available CANbus decoders will allow for climate control display with the Android stereos, and will post an update if I have any success with that.

New Nissan logo looks pretty good on 1st gen

Generic one purchased from AliExpress, still needed some modification to mount as it seems the newer Nissans use clip-on badges rather than stick-on, and where the badge goes on the charge door has a hump right in the middle for no reason. I don't hate the new Nissan logo though compared to most other simplified modern logos.

(Don't worry about the background that's not important)

Home Depot listing multi-packs with the divided price per unit as the main price

On the main light bulbs page each listing can only show one price, and so it shows as $7.49 and this is what price indexers like Google pick up on as well. It's not until you open the product page, and look at the smaller print below the big price, that in reality it's $14.98 for the pack of two. They had another 4 pack of round bulbs as well for "$9.99" according to the clickbait price, and in reality it is $39 for the 4.

Would you want real life Kpop artist cameos in the sequel and other future content?

Just curious as to what others might think on this, especially people who already are kpop fans, and if so who would you want to appear?

KPDH managed to drag me back down the kpop rabbit hole after being away from it for 13 years, and the success of the movie has obviously not gone unnoticed by real-life groups and idols, so it's certainly had a sizable impact on the entire kpop scene.

I think it would be pretty neat to have some vocal (and possibly animated) cameos by some other real life kpop artists in the sequel and maybe other future content! Twice and MEOVV existing in KPDH already established that they do share at least some of the same other idols as us.

Even if it's not anything major, even just having a few random short interactions that happen to be voiced by and modeled after real idols/groups would be pretty cool and have the world feel more real to those who know.

These kinds of celebrity cameos certainly aren't unheard of in animation. If Cars can feature Jeremy Clarkson and Jay Leno, why shouldn't KPDH 2 feature Jisoo in a video as herself, Zoey bumping into Chaewon, or Rumi getting a phone call from Karina? 😁

Pics sources

1: Babymonster "Golden" live

2: Entrancing by Siyeon of Dreamcatcher - an amazing song btw and the video with the beautiful hanboks and dancers takes me right back to the KPDH intro!!

3: What It Sounds Like by Yuqi of (g)i-dle

Edit: to clarify, I don't mean as in playing characters where their role is of any significance to the story. Just short cameos voicing background/minor characters where it doesn't matter if you actually recognize them or not, but just a "IYKYK"

Songs like Entrancing (황홀경) by Siyeon (Dreamcatcher)?

I am absolutely hooked on this song and can't believe I usually skipped past the solos when listening to save us in the past (for shame I know)

I've always loved this style of songs, which take traditional instruments and elements and do a really good job at incorporating them into a more modern style, namely in Vietnamese (my native language) and some Chinese songs. But I've not yet dabbled in seeking out this type of music in and amongst the Kpop world, so if there are any other similar ones by Korean artists/groups I'm very much all ears!!

Dreamcatcher - Odd Eye cover on guzheng (traditional Chinese instrument)

Not my video, just came across this and thought it was cool, as someone who has long wanted to learn how to play one myself someday!

This is specifically the Chinese guzheng, though different slight variations of the instrument which produce essentially the same sound are found in many southeast Asian cultures including gayageum in Korea, koto in Japan, and đàn tranh in Vietnam.

Their channel has covers of many other kpop songs as well! Including other Dreamcatcher songs, Twice, BTS, Blackpink, NMIXX, and more.

Almost the end of Rumi month (on the official calendar) 🥺🥺

Was supposed to be something I actually wanted to post and was proud of, but which got unjustly removed and then the algorithm further screwing me after trying to repost it, so some filler Rumi instead so I hopefully don't go to bed in a completely ruined mood, and maybe I'll remember to try it again in the morning 🤦‍♀️

Pretty CAN Bridges 💜 (available for sale)

I made a bunch of these a while back and have extras so figured I would offer them on here to anyone who might be considering a DIY battery swap and could use one.

They are based on the generic 2-port CAN filter and Dala's software, but otherwise fully custom and handmade. Including:

  • 3D printed (PETG) housings with mounting tabs for affixing under-dash with zip ties
  • Added connector for easier installation and strain relief of wires (original CAN bridge is just wires soldered directly to a bare PCB with no protection or strain relief)
  • High-quality braided sleeved wiring harnesses
  • Pre-flashed and ready to use, no STlink programmer needed
  • Installation guides with photos will be included

$20 + shipping - Rumi or Zoey version - intended for AZE0 (2013-2017), meant to be mounted anywhere up behind the dash or behind kick panel. Includes 3ft of CAN harness to run down to kick panel, and 3ft of power harness to run to OBD or fuse panel.

$70 + shipping - Mira version - intended for ZE0 (2011-12), meant to be mounted in center console. Includes 36-pin BMS connector and pigtail for retrofitting newer batteries, but is NOT a plug and play adapter. Center console disassembly and cutting and splicing of 11 BMS wires is required. Only one battery harness available.

Prices USD, only covers my cost on just the CAN bridge itself and wires. I am not making any money on these and in fact losing the time and material it took to create them. Just offering them in an effort to help the DIY Leaf community.

I am located in Alberta Canada, so please keep that in mind as international shipping (including to the US) may be more than what you are used to domestically.

It's so good! (There's more to this post)

Follow-up to my H-mart post. I wanted to try fish cake skewers with noodle soup, a dish common in Korean street food but that is surprisingly hard to find in restaurants locally to me. It looked and sounded so good, and indeed it is heavenly 🥰

Over the past few months I've discovered so much new delicious food that I would have never known about if I hadn't fallen down the rabbit hole of Korean culture thanks to KPDH.

And thing is, I've never cooked in my life until this. Aside from barely being able to fry an egg. I just really wanted my soup.

I didn't really do any design or creative stuff before, until I started learning to make my own graphics and models and get into 3D printing just to make little KPDH references for everywhere.

I never read a book on my own accord (as in that wasn't required for school) before, until I got sucked into KPDH fanfiction and even started writing some of my own.

I didn't particularly love interacting with kids before, but something about how much pure joy they get from the movie, and how much I'm able to give to them through it, makes it so satisfying to make them smile.

I never had a female idol/celebrity crush before, but probably a dozen or so guys including during my prior Kpop phase over a decade ago, until some fucking purple knocked the straight back into me and made me a girl group stan now.

I never felt like I got to live the childhood I would have hoped to, especially as I never really got to have things when I was young. Some things still feel like they're out of reasonable reach by now (like having an actual themed birthday party), but my love for this movie now with adult money and freedom, at least made me get a chance to make up for some of it.

So yeah, it is just a bowl of noodles. But it's one to self reflect over just how much this silly movie has changed me as a person over the past year. It's been quite the journey, and with so many amazing people in the community along the way! 💜

Another "why independent EV repair is important"

My alternative right now is literally to watch paint dry, so I guess here's another "tales from that kpop shop"

2 weeks ago, this customer's 2015 would no longer start after a DCFC session. Even after 12V pull and trying to boost it still no dice. The car had P31CA and P31CB faults, which meant that the quick charge relays were stuck closed. It will not start with these faults because closing the main contactors could then possibly have full battery pack voltage present at the main large pins of the CHAdeMO connector.

Dealer says car needs new PDM, over $8000 CAD quote on a car that would be possibly worth that much on a good day if it were running. To be clear, the dealer is technically not wrong. Internally, Nissan's diagnostic procedure for these faults, if concluding in the QC relays being stuck, is indeed to replace the entire PDM.

What should/could it be realistically? Well, the second picture I kinda took as a joke, but seriously, after less than an hour pulling the wipers and motor, windshield cowl, and PDM lid off, a few whacks to the QC relays with the Patented High-Voltage Safety Saingeom™ and it started right up.

The actual fix and most expensive route would have been to buy two replacement relays from digikey for $200/ea and splice over the low-voltage coil connector. This customer however didn't care about losing DCFC (car only had 20 something QC counts on it), so it was even simpler just to disconnect the relays and put it back together.

What would have been likely the car getting thrown away because nobody would put $8000+ into an $8000 car, was a $500 bill and a perfectly good car put back on the road. This repair isn't much different, or any more difficult, than pulling off a valve cover. The vast majority of shops would gladly do that, yet turn this kind of work down because they are afraid of EVs.

This is why independent EV repair is important, why right to repair is important, and why consumers need to see more value in vehicles that are easily repairable. Today's throwaway society sucks, and I do what I can, but I alone can't singlehandedly save every one of these cars out there that suffers an unfortunate fate due to small fixable issues.

Friday night shop = Kpop and battery swaps

Maybe I'm insane for this but why would I be out drinking or partying at 10pm on a Friday night when I could vibe to Dreamcatcher on blast while doing something I actually like doing.

One 2nd gen pack harvested and set aside, one 1st gen upgraded, and one 2nd gen actually downgraded. Because yes that's indeed something you can do, and a good 24 pack is still much more usable than a badly-failing 40 pack.

(I don't have a CAN bridge yet for the latter hence all the warning lights, but it does run)

They used to make EVs that were so ✨tactile✨

Just been borrowing this car for a few days. My daily driver is a Model S, the complete opposite extreme that was available at the same time when they were new, and I work with many modern EVs for a living.

Yet despite all the luxuries, big range numbers, and modern amenities I'm used to, I have to give this car back today, and man I'm going to miss it. Sometimes you don't know what you've missed until it's gone again.

(EDM Experts?) What type of music is Closer by Somi?

I've been loving this song lately and trying to find more like it (even in English and other languages) because it's a vibe that I do remember existing before, but that I haven't heard in quite a long time.

Stutter house seems to be the common one that pops up when I search for songs like Closer, but other stutter house tracks that come up in a search aren't quite the vibe I'm referring to.

It's moreso that dark atmospheric edm style of the backing track I'm looking to clue in on, which I remember hearing more of in the early 2000s (for example), and used to be referred to as something other than stutter house but it's been so long that I've forgotten.

Taking my pay bonus straight to Hmart like

They restocked on the ramyun cups at my local store! I was really tempted to take all the Rumi ones, but I didn't see any more cases of them (they still had 2 cases of Mira ones) so I left some for others.

I've never properly cooked anything in my life, outside of making instant noodles and barely being able to fry eggs. Since discovering and becoming enamored with Korean food though, I've wanted to try making some dishes myself, so uh wish me luck! 😁

It would be far from the first new venture I've tried or new skill I've acquired in these past couple of months. Somehow my love for the movie has motivated me to try and get into so many new things that I wouldn't have otherwise, or had considered for years but never had the push to.

Deep down, it really speaks as to how much of a difference it's made in me as a person, and continues to after all this time 💜

Two's Company updated!

For those who have been waiting for an update, chapter 43 is out!

https://archiveofourown.org/works/67237909/chapters/214834276

It's weird though because I'm not subscribed (I get far too many emails already), so I just check back on the story and the "updated" date occasionally. I didn't realize a new chapter had been added because for some reason the date still shows as last updated in March? I don't know if this affects people getting notified as well.
