Calling All Tradespeople - Advice Needed

I'm a 31y/o who currently works in the collapsing gaming industry and I'm interested in reskilling to a trade.

I'm curious
- What is your trade?
- Is it in high demand?
- How does it pay? (Exact figures please)

Things I'm interested in
- Electrician
- Welding
- Equipment operation
- Millwright
- CNC applications
- Plumbing, but I'd really only do this for good money
- HVAC (I don't know anything about this. what's the work like?)

Things I'm not interested in
- Carpentry (I failed Construction 10)
- Cooking (I've been back of house and I'll never do it again)

Nynaeyve in the Great Hunt

I'm about halfway through the great hunt atm. No spoilers please this is my first read. I'm at Nynaeves testing.

Nynaeve's hatred of Moraine barely makes sense. Moraine didn't cause the trollocs to appear, OR Rand to be a channeler/the dragon reborn yet she lives in Nynaeves head rent free. Moraine has saved everyone's lives multiple times over at this point... what gives?

Does this series get better?

Looking for honest answers only. I thoroughly enjoyed Stormlight Archives, even book 5.

I am about 90% through EoTW. I liked the characters well enough, but not a lot happens for most of this book except characters going from one place to another with a bit of exposition. Some of it felt like a bit of a slog, i think i audibly groaned when Rand and Mat went to YET ANOTHER inn. The characters have just entered the Ways, and again they are just... walking around... in a new place.

does this get better? more epic?

Sanity Check - Godot Prototyping Workflow

Hi guys!

I want to sanity check my environment art prototyping pipeline. I will be using Godot 4.6. This is a solo project, think simple PS1/early PC dungeon crawler (King's Field, Lunacid, etc.)

  1. Create some modular kit pieces with CSG geometery (E.g. simple_wall, half_wall, floor, pillar) etc. as scenes
  2. Build environment with those modular kit pieces
  3. When happy with the blockout, export the CSG scenes to 3d models, unwrap and texture
  4. Replace the CSG scenes with new scenes that have the final assets

Is there a better way to do this? Am I creating a bunch of work for myself with this flow?

I just started reading WoT

Hungry for more epic fantasy after reading the Stormlight Archive, I am about halfway through book one.

Tell me some things that won't make sense until I've read the series! (But, no spoilers please)

1.2 Vehicles - How accurate are these numbers and some other questions

How accurate are these numbers?
Based on this image for instance, it would take ~3.4 minutes to do the whole route.

Is the fuel consumption quite precise?

How does it calculate the time/trip?

Also, sometimes the 20.04 per min is increased to 21 or even higher. What makes the difference there?

Transferring a hard drive to a new build

Hi, sorry, I'm new with Linux. But for this one, I can't afford to FAFO on my own.

I want to transfer a 1TB hard drive full of documents and media to my new build which will have 6 hard-drives (including the newly transferred one).

What do I need to do to make sure nothing is lost and safely mount this drive?

In case it matters, both systems will use Debian 13 with Gnome.

how do i actually learn this stupid operating system

part rant/part compliant/part cry for help

I'm really sorry, but how does anyone learn how to use this software to a decent capability?

I am a relatively capable programmer of medium intelligence and decent software aptitude. I develop games for a living (no ai, not a vibe coder). I got a physics degree.

Whenever I want to do something with Debian it feels like pulling teeth and it's even harder to learn. A few months ago I decided to set up an old computer as an HTPC. It took me nearly 16 hours to get the HTPC working properly.

The first thing that happened was me accidentally taking permissions away from myself and basically bricking the entire install, forcing me to fully reset everything I had done to that point.

I had to restart the PC for the first time today and a bunch of stuff broke, namely my network drive unmounted itself and I could no longer RDP in from my Windows machine.

I think I have the RDP thing fixed, but in order to get the device to automatically log in and be useful I had to do some wizardry so that RDP will work on restart. For some reason it also automatically reset my RDP credentials to an automatically generated password, which completely breaks the purpose of RDP - I had to move the server box all the way over to my wall mounted monitor to fix everything.

Now I'm trying to set up a basic network share. There's about 500 comments telling me to use one utility or another with no real explanation, and I realize now that there's a bug (feature?) where if you mount to the network via Debian's GUI it will just unmount it when the PC restarts. Looks like in order to get it fixed I need to edit some arcane configuration file ("etc/fstab"), and I needed to google for 30 minutes to see how that would even work and how you'd go about editing it.

Am I seriously dumb? Is there a better place to look for information? I want to use Linux and Debian but the walls are closing in on me.

PS. Don't even get me started on the community. Asking questions is like a flowchart where someone points me somewhere useless, posts something assuming I'm an advanced user, or is just a snide insult.

What's the point of mutations after you've discovered all the genes?

Is there any reason to pick one mutation over another? You can swap all their abilities and their ultimate when splicing, which you'll do anyway.

Is there any reason to pick one path over another?

Pokemon focusing on wrong item

My ceruledge and combusken are close to each other. Both asked me for "relaxation/lots of fire" and so both have a lit brazier in their habitat. But when I ask ceruledge about its comfort level, it runs to combuskens brazier and asks for me to move it closer.

how do i fix this?
