From Empire Dylanesque:

— that big, terrible ’80s production with the Miami Vice drums, the overbearing backup singers, and the sluggishly steady metronomic synth gurgle that makes the version of “When the Night Comes Falling From the Sky” on Empire Burlesque feel like dying from a torturously slow cocaine overdose.

Eight-legged Johnny Cash (fan fiction)

Back in 2016 a new tarantula species Aphonopelma johnnycashi was discovered at Folsom prison.

I wrote some humorous lyrics in honor of this spider -- also paying homage to the Man in Black. I once sang the song in a student recital with a bluegrass ensemble.

The song is intended to be sung to the tune of “Wabash Cannonball” by A.P. Carter, in the style of Johnny Cash. The chorus is admittedly awkward to sing with all the Latin words 😄 It's important to pronounce 'johnnycashi' as 'Johnny Cash-ee'.

The NSFW flair is due to drug references.

Eight-legged Johnny Cash

I’m stuck in Folsom prison; it’s dark and I’m broke;
So I find myself a doobie, close my eyes and smoke.
Then I awake in horror; hit the floor with a crash;
It’s crawling on my face — the eight-legged Johnny Cash!

Chorus:
Genus Aphonopelma johnnycashi,
Family Theraphosidae … oh, Lord help me!
It’s worse than a fungus or any kind of rash.
Meet your new cellmate, the eight-legged Johnny Cash!

Arachnids are dandy, so all the people say!
Beautiful orb weavers; daddy long legs at play.
Recluse has a fiddle; black widow the hour glass;
But the meanest damn spider? Eight-legged Johnny Cash!

Walked up north from Mexico, one cold December day.
Crawled in Folsom prison and decided to stay.
Shook hands with the warden; made his home in a crack.
Now a smart ass arachnologist named him for the man in black.

There’s folks in California, living high and wholesome;
Laughing in a dispensary, not far from Folsom.
When I get out of prison, I’ll start my new stash
With the best strain of all time, eight-legged Johnny Cash!

Tom Turkey (parody)

These lyrics are making fun of Whole Foods and their customers, of course, while also having a go at the tune “Tom Dooley” and gothic murder-your-girlfriend ballads in general. Idealy, it should be sung in the style of The Kingston Trio.

To snowy Colorado,
I came to meet my wife.
She took me into Whole Foods,
I swear it cost my life.

Instead of goin’ fishing,
We bought some arctic char.
I grilled that fish a-cryin’,
Cost more than my first car.

We bought us a tom turkey,
To eat Thanksgiving day.
I gave the man my wallet,
Then kneeled down to pray.

Organic shade grown coffee,
Milk made from flax?
Hemp-filled gluten-free waffles,
Raw probiotic snacks.

We had to sell our condo,
For one over-packaged eclair!
If it weren’t for Whole Foods,
I coulda been a millionaire.

1971 - give me a number and I'll give you a country song

Give me a number between 1 and 673 in exchange for a country song from 1971. This was a great year for country music!

For live albums, I go by the date of the concert and not the release date. If a singer didn't release an album in 1971, I looked for singles.

I have a broad view of country music, so please let me know what subgenre you would use to classify the song or if you think it's not really country at all.

Esteemed poet Philip Larkin is not impressed by Bob

“I’m afraid I poached Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited out of curiosity and found myself well rewarded. Dylan’s cawing, derisive voice is probably well suited to his material – I say probably because much of it was unintelligible to me – and his guitar adapts itself to rock (Highway 61′) and ballad (‘Queen Jane’) admirably. There is a marathon ‘Desolation Row’ which has an enchanting tune and mysterious, possibly half-baked words.”

1971 blues - give me a number and I'll give you a song

Give me a number between 1 and 457 in exchange for a blues tune from 1971.

For live albums, I go by the date of the concert and not the release date. Music release dates are in some cases ambiguous, with conflicting sources of information. For some artists, where they didn't release an album in 1971, I looked for singles.

My interpretation of blues is relatively broad. Feel free to let me know what subgenre you would use to classify the song or if you think it's not really a blues song. The selection is constrained by what's available on Spotify.

bear feeding

I was eating a bland buffet breakfast in the hotel lobby with my spouse Mae and our daughter Joan. I noticed that some of the other hotel guests weren't wearing shoes or socks and remarked "I don't think people should be eating breakfast in bare feet."

Joan agreed with me. Mae hadn't heard me correctly. She looked at us quizzically and asked "What's bear feeding?"

Joan and I laughed, because it's not uncommon for family conversations to go like this. Someone was leaving the lobby, balancing a styrofoam cup of coffee, cheap croissants and other food items in their arms, as they headed back to their room. I pointed at the person and said "Bear feeding is when you grab a bunch of food from the buffet and take it back to your room."

Joan laughed, while Mae thought I was being serious. This is now a family expression we use whenever we see a hotel guest leaving the buffet with an armful of food.

I pushed the stroller with my one year old onto the festival grounds

Two teenage girls fussed over him, saying "He looks just like you. Are you the father?"

"No," I replied, "just a close friend of the family"

The teenagers didn't get the joke, looking at me a bit confused as I continued strolling.

I chuckled over it for the rest of the afternoon.

Live is One-Way Ticket

Do you believe in reincarnation? Cousin Joe says no, there "ain't no second time around".

Another great line in this song is the advice to spend your money while you have it, because you can't take it with you: "you ain't never seen an armored car in a funeral yet".

Carmen Maki goes electric in 1971!

I'm listening to the 1971 album Blues Creation by Japanese artist Carmen Maki. Apparently she was well known as a folk singer in Japan in the late 60s, having success with a Japanese rendition of Motherless Child.

In 1971 she went electric - Blues Creation is a mix of blues, blues rock and hard rock. I'm really enjoying it.

Any other Carmen Maki fans out there?

Could we pivot away from sick kids and contemporary dance and toward tax reform?

Connor says this to Logan in S1 E4 — “Sad Sack Wasp Trap”, which is a great episode for Connor to display his greed, incompetence, poor management skills, and many other terrible qualities.

I tried to turn this dialog into an uplifting affirmation:

Positive Pivot

Not defined by youthful trauma, I can dance like noone’s watching;
Pay my taxes on time & drink wine with a minimum of splotching.

What is your favorite dialog in this episode?

Agent of Change -- a positive affirmation for S1 E3, “Lifeboats”

Meet my trainer at the crack of dawn;
Adrenaline moves my day along.
My needs are all being served,
My authority is deserved.

Inspired by the dialog: “5:30 am, right? — Yep. — Good, because the other 5:30 I’ll be at work, you know, being an agent of change and firing people.”

Cynical alternative:
In the gym at dawn, yo —
COO says time to go!
All the normies have to bend
To the DNA dividend!

I can and I will (a positive affirmation based on Season 1, Episode 2)

I drink strong coffee and eat fast food.
I rise to the occasion and do what I should.

Inspired by the dialog: “If you need me to get sandwiches or coffee or step up from Regional Parks and run North America, I can and I will, and that’s just an offer on the table.”

Golden Cage (a positive affirmation based on Season 1, Episode 1)

If I’m in a cage, it’s made of gold.
The silver key is mine to hold,
So I will sing sweet and bold.

Inspired by the dialog: “I’m gonna lock you in a golden cage, fuck you with a silver dildo, and make you sing whatever song I want.”

altitude gain for Sky Pond?

I hiked to Sky Pond in Rocky Mountain National Park on Sunday. AllTrails says the altitude gain is less than 1,800 feet. My Apple Watch claims it was almost 2,700 feet.

Has anyone else seen this discrepancy?

from "tight like that" to "brutal"

The issue of Olivia Rodrigo's song "brutal" borrowing from "Pump it Up" by Elvis Costello is being discussed in other subreddits. "Pump it Up" was inspired by Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" which drew from Chuck Berry's "Too Much Monkey Business" (as well as pulling heavily from Beat poets).

Fast, clever rhythmic wordplay has a long history in American music. The larger story here is that white popular music lifted the ideas from African American musicians. Here is a playlist that picks one representative song from each decade, going back to the 1920s. A playlist like this could easily have ended with rap and hip hop, but I steered it towards "brutal", which is a pretty good song.

1920s - McKinney's Cotton Pickers - It's Tight Like That

1930s - Robert Johnson - They're Red Hot

1940s - Cab Calloway - The Jumpin' Jive

1950s - Chuck Berry - Too Much Monkey Business

1960s - Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues

1970s - Elvis Costello - Pump it Up

1980s - R.E.M. - It's the End of the World as we Know It (And I Feel Fine)

1990s - Savage Garden - I Want You

2000s - The Ting Tings - That's Not My Name

2010s - Courtney Barnett - Pedestrian at Best

2020s - Olivia Rodrigo - brutal
