Emergency Vet Thank You Gift

A year and a half ago, my boyfriend's dog was acting off. We decided to take him to a reputable, nearby emergency vet. They discovered he had a mesenteric torsion and required emergency surgery. It was extremely stressful having to scramble together $13,000. (We now are huge proponents of dog insurance because it would have only cost us $3,000 had we had it...now we know). He survived the initial surgery but passed away from complications while recovering there.

It was devastating, especially for my boyfriend. I've always wanted to thank the staff, and am finally getting around to it. I ordered custom vegan cookies with a veterinary theme and was thinking of coffee carafes too (regular and decaf). Is that something they would appreciate? Should I email to schedule a drop off or just drop it off? And would the night time crew appreciate it more since I'm guessing the daytime staff gets more drop offs usually?

Excruciating Cramps (27F)

I fully trust doctors but I can't lie and say I'm not frustrated by my experience regarding my period cramps.

I've had excruciating cramps since my first period when I was 12, and missed school frequently because of it. I was on birth control in high school (sprintec) to help alleviate my cramps, but it did nothing. During that time I also got frequent aura migraines so I now know estrogen based birth control is not for me.

I had a bilateral salpingectomy and asked them to look for signs of endometriosis, none were found. I gave up trying to find an answer for a few years and then decided with new insurance this year I would try again.

I had a pap smear done and after explaining my painful periods I was referred for my first transvaginal ultrasound. No major findings: Uterine dimensions 4.1 x 5.4 x 7.1 cm. Endometrial thickness 17.44 mm. 2 x 1.8 x 1.4 cm anechoic simple right ovarian cyst. Right ovary measures 2.6 x 3.4 x 3.4 cm. Left ovary measures 1.7 x 2 x 3.1 cm.

The doctor that ordered the transvaginal ultrasound said she would refer me to an obgyn who could hopefully order an mri (I think that's what it was? or maybe a different type of ultrasound). I go to the obgyn and she said that test is unnecesary and that some women like me just have painful periods...I felt very trigerred because deep down I can't accept that what I have been dealing with is normal. I even told her on a scale of 1-10 I've been at a 9 once before and genuinely believed I was about to pass out and told my dad to lay next to me incase I do, and I was 20 years old. I have taken so much ibuprofen in the past to the point where I worry it is damaging me.

Right now, I have taken 1200 mg of ibuprofen (prescribed) and the max it says I should take is 1800 mg total but I have to wait six hours for my next dose and I am in so much pain right now. Is this seriously normal for some women?

Blushing?

I deal with extreme facial blushing and we talk a lot on r/CuringBlushing and r/Erythrophobia about ETS surgery (as a last resort). It seems like you guys are another subreddit that discuss it a lot, though I understand there can be detrimental side effects.

It got me curious, how many of you would trade hyperhidrosis for blushing? And I'm not talking cute blushing, I'm talking fire engine red. I personally would trade blushing for hyperhidrosis, but if I lived with it I may think differently.

Soma San Diego

I just got scammed for $100 two tickets to the soma san diego show using the megathread. Really, really bumming. I know this is one in a million but if someone has one or two extra tickets they'd like to part with for san diego for free I would be forever grateful.

I feel so dumb. u/BethPercy is the scammer.

Gay as an Insult

My friend and I are straight. Her sister is married to a woman.

I recently hung out with her friends (straight males) for the first time and I heard them nonchalantly use gay as an insult as if they use the word in that context all the time. I have not been around anyone that uses that in over a decade so it was shocking.

In private, I asked her if her friends were homophobic and explained what I heard. She said she didn't hear it and said her friends are not homophobic so I started doubting what I heard. But I am 99% sure I heard what I heard.

I recently ended our friendship and this was a big reason. I also recall a while ago we were talking about sexuality and I said I think I am straight but maybe that's because of comp het, it's hard to know for sure. When I said comp het, she scoffed and asked what that word was not in a curious way but in a judgemental way. I explained the term and she didn't even respond to it. Anyways my question is what the heck??? How is your sister in a wlw relationship and you hang around homophobes? It's like she doesn't think using gay as an insult makes you a homophobe but literally why else use it?

Ended a friendship over the n word

I (26) have been friends with "Sarah" (26) for a decade. For her birthday, she invited me to celebrate with her college friends who I had not met before. I was excited...however, I quickly learned a bunch of them say the n word. None of them are black. They are all either asian or hispanic, including my friend. I am non-hispanic white. It was a very uncomfortable time and I told her twice it bothered me. She wasn't bothered by the word and apologized but said they had a good heart.

Afterwards when I started avoiding her she asked why I was acting off. I told her I can't be friends anymore because of our differing core morals. So yea, I just ended a decade long friendship with someone I hang out weekly with and it was the right decision but it feels weird because I've never ended a friendship before. She never has said the n word but it feels gross that she is ok with others saying it. Anyone else relate?

Dog Glucose 24

We got our dog's annual blood work done a few weeks ago. Today while reviewing the results, I noticed his glucose level result was 24. "Dr. Google" says this is very concerning, but our vet never mentioned his glucose at all.

She only mentioned his SDMA being mildly elevated and Creatinine and BUN being at the upper end of normal, so to retest his blood in 3 months for possible renal disease.

He was also fighting a skin infection that is looking a lot better now.

I feel like an awful friend

I need to complain about a surprise birthday party I planned for one of my best friends, but I feel awful for being upset with how it turned out. I would never express my anger to my friend so I am turning to this.

Every year, my friend Lily goes all out for her birthday. She likes to plan multiple celebrations and treats it more like a birthday month than a birthday day. Some of her old friends even made fun of her for being so extra with her birthday parties, and she is no longer friends with them...rightfully so.

Four months before her birthday, an unexpected, devastating loss happened in her life. I made sure to be there for her in whatever way she needed, consistently checking in if she needed space or company. I can't imagine the grief and pain she has endured. She was so thankful. She continued going out to events with our friend group because it helped her mental health.

A month before her birthday, I asked if she had plans. She didn't, which given her birthday history was unlike her but made sense given the recent loss. So, I suggested a sleepover with two of our other closest friends who have been there for her the most. She said that would be great. Little did she know that we had actually booked a night at one of the most premier hotels in the city. The hotel had a two day cancellation policy, so I continuosly checked in with her once to twice a week mentioning how fun our sleepover is going to be...how we can have a cozy night together...to the point where I though she may be catching on that there was a surprise. I wanted to make sure she was 100% down because it was a lot of money I was putting into this. A week before, we told her we would grab drinks at the hotel before the sleepover (as an excuse for a reason to meet there) and she said she was excited.

A day before the sleepover, I texted to ask if she wanted to get a pre-birthday spa treatment with me, but I didn't hear back which was unlike her. Then on the morning of the sleepover, my friend said she heard Lily was visiting an old friend who lived five hours away, which was confusing to us because she never told us she was out of town. I called her and texted but didn't hear back. After waiting a few hours, I texted her mom to ask if she was coming back that night. Her mom said she had just spoken to her on the phone and that she told her she wasn't coming home until the next day.

I felt gutted. I spent a month planning and budgeting meticulously to go all out for the birthday. Between the hotel, cake, decorations, and gifts I spent $700. I've never spent that much on anyone's birthday ever.

I quickly contacted the hotel to ask if we could move the booking to the following night, but they said the cost would be double.

At 8 pm the night of the sleepover, Lily finally texted me and apologized for the late response. She said she has no service and car trouble, and asked to reschedule the sleepover for another day. I told my friend the truth about the hotel reservation but impressed that it was no worry at all, and that no one was mad and we love her so much. She was surprised and so touched that we planned all that for her and said she wish she would have planned better to make it in time. I told her it was no worries and that we hope she is having a fun time.

But to be honest I was hurt. I knew that she had service because she was in contact with her mom. I was hurt that she cancelled a sleepover at 8 pm. I was sad that she had planned this trip to visit an old friend and not mention it until the sleepover was supposed to start. I did text, call, and reach out multiple times without hearing back for days. I felt like I was ghosted.

The hotel offered to move the booking to a later date, but to be honest, I was so down that I had done so much work for this night and worked around four friends schedules to plan and exhausted from all the details that I didn't even want to use more brain power to reschedule. So, my friends and I decided to just have a fun night at a fun hotel nonetheless. And it was a great time.

I gathered the decorations I had purchased, the cake, the gifts, and went to town decorating her house. She was so thankful when she got home and saw all of it. It looked beautiful.

Since then, I won't lie and say I haven't pulled back slightly. Even before the horrible event happened, I was always the one planning our hangouts and coming up with fun ideas. She mentioned she wants to hang soon and I keep expressing enthusiastically how I would love to. But she won't plan anything, and so the cycle repeats. I think I feel burnt out.

Placebo Effect

Now that I've been on propanidol for a couple months, I've gotten familiar with its pros and cons. In all honesty, it doesn't help my blushing much. But it does wonders for my sweating in anxious situations.

I did want to share a quick tidbit about the first couple of days I was on the medication. I naively believed I had found a cure to my blushing and was on cloud 9. I felt SO sensitive to how the medication was being processed in my body, but now looking back I think I just have high anxiety related to new medications and just am hyper aware of any change. Now when I take it, I don't feel any different. Anyways, those first couple of days were glorious. I went up to random people at the grocery store and made small talk. I had no stress talking to the cashier at check out. I went to a concert alone and made conversation with so many people. Then at some point while talking to someone the next day my face got bright red at a really insignificant, silly interaction. And I felt my whole world crumble.

All this to say the initial placebo affect was like a drug and I felt like I got to experience who I could have been or who I used to be before blushing created so much social anxiety.

Daily Vents

I don't really know how threads/subreddits work but is there a way we can pin a thread just to vent about daily blushing occurances?

For example, I was at the grocery store and couldn't find a basket. So, I went up to a man at self checkout that was done using his and was paying before leaving, so I said "I'll take this off your hands". He didn't hear me or turn around so I was going to repeat myself but my face became fire engine hot so I took the basket and booked it. It's such a silly thing that my face got so red from that.

Propranolol Survey

Forgive me if this has already been done. I thought it may be helpful to compile a simple survey about the effectiveness of Propranolol:

  1. Dosage

  2. Frequency

  3. Rate 1-5 how much is has helped decrease blushing

  4. Rate 1-5 how much it has helped decrease other physical symptoms (ie racing heart, excesive sweating)

Rapid Metabolizer: CYP2C19

Anyone here done genetic testing and found out they were a rapid metabolizer of CYP219?

I did a few years ago and found that out but didn't think much of it. I recently started taking propanolol for blushing. It hasn't helped my blushing much but it does help my racing heart and sweating during social anxiety.

However, I just found out propanolol is metabolized by CYP219...so since I am a rapid metabolizer, is it even worth it for me to take? Is it weird that my doctor prescribed it to me when my history says I am a rapid metabolizer if cyp2c19?

Inverted Chromosome

I am pretty uneducated on this topc so I though I'd come here.

When my mom was pregnant with me, she was called into a serious meeting with 5 doctors who explained an inversion occured on my 22nd chromosome. It was scary for her, they said it may be years down the road before I show signs of something, but they were concerned.

I am now 26 and appear pretty normal. Is it worth mentioning this to my doctor and asking for genetic testing?
