Cebu Pacific restores direct flights from Iloilo to Bangkok, Singapore

Building on their recent international expansions from Manila, Cebu and Davao, Cebu Pacific will resume two more international flights from Iloilo, connecting Bangkok-Don Mueang and Singapore starting October 24.

These destinations were previously suspended as a result of the high fuel prices caused by the US-Iran war.

With Air Macau and Juneyao Air making their entry to the Philippines, who will be the next Chinese carrier to do so?

Despite the political issues, Chinese carriers have been enjoying success with flights to the Philippines. Recently, XiamenAir launched two new routes to Manila (Chongqing and Hangzhou), and two new airlines have joined in (Air Macau and Juneyao Air).

China is home to several carriers, all of which are growing exponentially. There's Hainan Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, 9 Air, Spring Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, Beijing Capital Airlines, Tianjin Airlines, etc.

My best bets are Hainan Airlines, Spring Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, and Shanghai Airlines.

PAL expects up to five more aircraft this year

Speaking on the sidelines at the groundbreaking ceremony for Lufthansa Technik Philippines’ Clark facility last week, PAL Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer Carlos Luis L. Fernandez said that the airline is expected to receive five more aircraft this year.

“Well, we have an additional A350-1000 coming in August. Hopefully, based on the plan, we will receive two more additional this year, and we will receive about two A321neos by the end of the year”, said Fernandez.

Additionally, he mentioned that PAL isn’t looking to add any new destinations at the moment due to high fuel prices. “We do not look at adding significant routes. So that will likely serve existing routes we have”, he said.

EasyJet in tie-up talks with Virgin Atlantic after Apollo takeover

From a report by The Times - "EasyJet has held talks with Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Atlantic over a potential tie-up between the budget carrier and the long-haul airline.

The two companies have discussed deepening arrangements on codeshare agreements - where one airline operates a flight and one or more partner airlines sells seats on that plane - and loyalty programmes, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Last week, easyJet agreed to a £5.7 billion takeover by Apollo, and the US private equity firm has spelt out that it regards "exploring opportunities to interline [buy tickets on other airlines' platforms] and codeshare" as a key priority. These are reciprocal arrangements that would allow easyJet to significantly expand its route network by selling flights operated by other airlines."

Is there potential for a PAL-Porter partnership?

Philippine Airlines has been seeing immense success for their Toronto flights, which is now being operated by their flagship A350-1000. PAL primarily codeshares with Westjet for connecting flights. However, there is another carrier that might help further expand PAL's presence in Canada, especially if they might end up in the same alliance in the future.

Toronto-based Porter is Canada's 3rd largest airline. They've also been growing quite fast in recent years, mostly through service and partnerships. While they are an all-economy airline, they compensated by adding premium features such as complimentary snacks and alcoholic beverages, a 2-2 configuration for more comfort, and free Wi-Fi to stay competitive, which ultimately paid off. Porter has also partnered with American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, British Airways, Japan Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Fiji Airways, all of which are part of the oneworld alliance. American and British are notable partners, as they command plenty of power in terms of potential oneworld memberships. With these partnerships, it makes total sense for Porter to join oneworld. After all, Air Canada is tied to Star Alliance, while Westjet is leaning towards Skyteam. The 3rd largest airline alliance hasn't had a Canada-based carrier since founding member Canadian Airlines departed due Air Canada's acquisition.

With PAL scheduled to join oneworld in 2027, the carrier will likely focus on more alliance-related partnerships for the future. Porter could end up being one of them, should they join oneworld next. Their partnership with Westjet could still continue, albeit downgraded to an interline partnership, while Porter will be PAL's main codeshare partner for Canadian flight connections.
