What cleanup crew would yall recommend for Leland?

The internet lied and spot-treating algae with hydrogen peroxide wiped out all the shrimps/snails that shared the tank with him. And by that I mean the ones that he didn’t manage to eat first. Ideally I could get more skrimps bc they’re whimsical and fun but I’m hesitant to hand him another seafood buffet.

An omnivore would be ideal since I need something that will clean up plant matter as well as leftover food.

Tank is 30g and *was* heavily planted but the hydrogen peroxide really did a number on those too. It’ll be heavily planted again eventually once stuff bounces back/gets replaced.

Thankfully Leland is okay! Losing him as well would have destroyed me. I’ve done two 5g water changes and it looks like I’ve got a bacterial bloom going so I’m gonna let it rest before testing the parameters/adding anything else.

This is Squash Man. Squash Man likes to mess with my heart by resting under the dwarf sag instead of literally anywhere else. Please roast him.

Please excuse the fallen bloodworms. The shrimps will make quick work of those.

Sunburn or a watering issue?

**Disclaimer:** Despite keeping them for years successfully, I know little to nothing about individual species of succulents, which I think has contributed to the problem here lol

I got these haworthia a little under a year ago from Mountain Crest. The discoloration appeared maybe 3 months ago for the one in the first pic, maybe 3 weeks ago for the one in the second. The cymbiformis has lived in that corner the whole time but the other one (label illegible) was pretty much directly under the light until tonight when I moved it to where it is in the third pic.

My succs live in a south facing window **but** I live in the middle of the woods and the trees block out most of the light in the spring/summer. To supplement, around 3-4 months ago I set up a uv light meant for aquarium plants (all I had and figured plants are plants, aquatic or not). I’m not sure of its specs or even what brand it is to look it up, but I have it set up so it’s 6-7” from the plants. Admittedly, I don’t have it on a timer and I’m super forgetful so sometimes it’s on for 6 hours, sometimes I leave it on for like 2 days straight before remembering to turn it off which is extra dumb bc it has a built in timer of either 8 or 10 hours. I just also forget to set the timer when I turn it on lol, please don’t roast me, I’m sensitive. I didn’t think it was a huge issue bc the descriptions for them both said they prefer high light but maybe there’s some nuance to since I was skulking about in this sub, came across the lighting/watering wiki, and found out haworthias don’t like direct light. Oops.

I remember the website saying that the succs I got go dormant in the summer and to water them less during that period so I haven’t watered them in a month? Maybe a little longer. But definitely sometime in May. Around 3months ago I started watering less and less frequently (no set schedule), versus the winter watering schedule (supposedly their growing period) where I was watering every two weeks.

I had them potted in Rosy cactus/succulent mix since March but just repotted them tonight in Jack’s gritty mix bc I didn’t like how poorly the Rosy drained/how long it stayed moist. I was worried about root rot but during repotting, all the roots looked fantastic so that rules that out.

So, what say the jury?

Would you trust wayfair/similar quality furniture with the weight of a 20g?

I really want to get a 20g long to upgrade my betta from his 6.6g cube but the only space I have in my house currently houses a 60” long 6 drawer dresser. It’s what I’ve got the cube on (scooted all the way to the back corner so it has as much support as possible) but it bows toward the middle so I don’t trust it with either the structural integrity of a longer tank nor the ability to support the weight of anything bigger.

*2nd pic for reference- you can see by the water level how much the table dips in the middle*

I’m not against replacing the dresser but my max budget is $350usd which limits my options to a pretty shit quality one from like wayfair or something. Shit quality also likely means shit weight capacity and idk if I’d be able to trust it to support a 20g. Would you? **(Have also been scouting fb marketplace for solid wood but have been unsuccessful so far)**

I’m also not against a proper tank stand but all 6 drawers of that dresser is packed full of stuff with nowhere else to go so the stand would have to have equal storage capabilities. Idk if y’all know of any stands that fit that requirement but I haven’t found any in the searches I’ve done.

**TLDR;** I want to upgrade my betta to a 20g but would need a new piece of furniture for it. That furniture would need to match the storage capacity of a 60” 6 drawer dresser with a budget of $350usd. Worried about the quality of furniture that fits in that budget being able to support the weight of a 20g and can’t find a proper tank stand that meets the storage requirement (non-negotiable). House is very small and putting a small but strong shelf in another part of the house isn’t possible.

What I ordered vs what I got: Modern Aquarium. Is this normal?

This is my first order from them and while some stuff looked good, overall I was disappointed. But this one in particular really threw me.

How can I improve the beak for my duckie? Pattern I used called for mr w/8 sc, then one more round of 8sc to complete the beak.

To clarify, beak pattern was:

-8 sc in mr

-8 sc

-That’s all

I was skeptical using a mc for the beak bc of the roundness of it all but I gave it a shot bc I’m a beginner so what do I know, and to no one’s surprise, I don’t like how it looks. Also since it’s 8sc on top of 8sc it curls a bit.

I messed up the pattern anyways (brain shut off and skipped a large part of the pattern lol) so I’m going to start the whole thing over. Before I do, does anyone have suggestions for a better beak?

Pic of duckie body pattern for reference. Using red heart super savers size 4 yarn with a 2mm hook (per pattern suggestion)

Where to look for a job, ideally in animal care/husbandry?

I’ve heard that indeed isn’t the place to look anymore and I’m not on linked in, which I’ve heard is also useless anyways. I’m still regularly checking indeed anyways but there’s <2 pages of job listings for my area, even looking outside of animal care.

I’m 31 and my entire working history revolves around animal care. My latest job was in lab animal husbandry which I had to leave after developing an allergy to the mice/mental health issues from what I witnessed there. I got that job through a friend who was a recruiter but has since left that job so I don’t want to bother her by reaching out and seeing if she knows of anything available.

I don’t know if this is relevant but I really have no other skills outside of animal care. I’ve done short stints in admin work at an animal shelter but I have adhd and really thrive more in positions that allow me to stay active. I’m willing to give other industries a shot but animal care is my passion and I’d prefer to make a career out of that if possible.

Thanks in advance!

Why didn’t anyone tell me about red tiger lotus sooner!?!

I thought they’d be hard to grow but I put this bad boy in my tank two weeks ago and it’s exploding with new, gigantic foliage! I’m obsessed!

Too much light or nutrient deficiency causing brown spots on java fern?

Light is from Dustin’s, stays on between 6-8hrs/day, full power bc all my other plants require more light. I didn’t realize java fern couldn’t handle a lot of light when I got it (I’m a beginner). Started using Dustin’s fert as well but not until ~1.5 weeks ago, no ferts up until then.

It’s a java fern mat from Buce Plant that I got about a month ago. If the problem is too much light and you want it, hmu lol. I don’t have anywhere with lower light it can go and would hate to toss a perfectly fine plant bc it just doesn’t work in my tank so I’d be happy to send it to someone who could use it.

TIA!

Please explain like I’m 5- Seamless diagonal color change (ascending)

Asking how to clean up the angled color change again lol. I’ve watched the recommended video among others but can’t quite seem to get a grasp on it and as much as I want to give up, I can’t let it win. So please explain like I’m 5 what to do to achieve a clean line.

If my work looks backwards, it’s bc I’m left handed.

The left side turned out great and I changed colors the exact same way on the right so how on god’s green earth did it turn out so poorly? Pattern is paid so snippet of this portion in second pic.

I wish I could post the entire pattern bc it’s also supposed to be more oval and mine turned out pretty round but w/e. I’d rather address the color change issue first.

Thanks! I’d love to say this is my last post for while but I’m really hyperfixated on crocheting rn and REALLY not good at it so I’ll probably be back in a few hours. Tyly

u/brad_sausages — 3 months ago

I’m so sorry for posting another question in a matter of hours but I have no one else to ask.

So when swapping colors, I understand it that you start a stitch with color A then finish with color B. If the pattern says 10 with color A, then 6 with color B, do I initiate the color change by finishing stitch 10 with color B, or start stitch 11 (the first of the 6), with color A then finish with B?

Likewise when switching back. If color B calls for 6 stitches, would I initiate the color change on the 6th stitch or 7th?

Hope that makes sense! And thanks in advance!
