I used to think that if I kept improving my editing skills and making prettier videos, brands would eventually find me.

That didn't happen.

What made the biggest difference was realizing that UGC is not only about creating content. It is also about positioning yourself as someone who can help brands solve a problem.

A few things that helped me:

1. Stop waiting for inbound inquiries.
I started sending outreach emails and DMs regularly. Even if only a small percentage replied, it still created more opportunities than waiting for brands to discover my portfolio.

2. Give brands content ideas immediately.
Instead of saying, "I'd love to collaborate," I started saying things like:

"I noticed your TikTok mainly posts product showcases. A testimonial-style video or a POV hook might resonate well with your audience."

This made my outreach feel less like a pitch and more like a solution.

3. Build a portfolio that shows variety.
Brands want to know if you can adapt.

Try including:

• Product demos
• Voice-over videos
• Testimonial content
• Problem-solution videos
• Different hooks for the same product

If you have metrics, include them too. Even something simple like:

• 25k organic views
• 8% engagement rate
• 300 saves on a carousel post

Numbers help brands understand your potential impact.

4. Offer packages instead of single videos.

A lot of creators leave money on the table by only offering one-video rates.

For example:

• 1 video package
• 3 video bundle
• Monthly content package
• Add-ons for usage rights or extra hooks

Brands often need multiple creatives to test, especially for ads.

UGC has become much more competitive this year, and I feel that outreach, positioning, and understanding marketing matter just as much as content quality.

For creators who are already landing clients consistently, what made the biggest difference for you: improving your content, sending more outreach, or networking with other creators?

A few months ago, I stumbled upon one of the weirdest side hustles I've ever tried.

There are thousands of people researching their family history, but many of their ancestors are buried in cemeteries located in different cities—or even different countries. Instead of traveling, they post requests online asking if someone nearby can visit a cemetery and take photos of specific gravestones.

Out of curiosity, I accepted one request.

I spent around 20 minutes walking through a local cemetery, found the grave, took a few clear photos, and uploaded them. I earned the equivalent of around $15 for that single request.

What surprised me wasn't the money—it was the message I received afterward. The requester told me it was the first time they had seen their great-grandparents' grave because they lived overseas and couldn't afford to visit.

Since then, I realized this isn't just a side hustle. You're helping people reconnect with family history, preserve records, and sometimes even solve genealogy mysteries.

Things people are paid for include:

• Taking photos of gravestones
• Transcribing old cemetery records
• Cleaning up hard-to-read inscriptions
• Mapping grave locations for genealogy websites

Definitely one of the most unexpected ways I've seen people earn extra income.

I used to think that landing a role in Private Equity, Hedge Funds, or Venture Capital was all about mastering financial models and memorizing technical questions.

But after talking to professionals and reading more about the industry, I realized that many firms care just as much about how you think.

Anyone can learn how to build an LBO model or calculate valuation multiples with enough practice. What’s harder to teach is having a genuine opinion on businesses and markets.

Can you explain why a company is a good investment?

Can you identify risks that others might be overlooking?

Can you defend your investment thesis when someone challenges it?

One piece of advice I often hear is to start treating yourself like an investor early. Read annual reports, follow market news, and keep an investment journal. Write down your ideas and revisit them after a few months. You'll learn a lot from seeing what you got right—and wrong.

I think many candidates spend hundreds of hours preparing for technical interviews but very little time developing their own investment thinking.

For those already working in buy-side roles, what do you think candidates underestimate the most during recruiting?

\* Had experience as well as a service crew in jollibee where I learned how to communicate, be independent, learned things on my own, time-management, and multitasking!

\* Had experience in freelance, but one time lang din siya, I created a website for my friend for their project in a specific subject, but not quite into it na rin. However, I learned how to express my ideas, imagination, and think outside of the box.

I used to think I needed tons of followers and brand collaborations before I could start doing UGC. Turns out, I was wrong.

Most of the clients I talked to didn't ask about my follower count first—they wanted to see if I could create content that matched their brand.

One thing that really helped me was creating sample videos for products I already had at home. I filmed skincare products, gadgets, and even random items I genuinely use. Those sample videos became the foundation of my portfolio.

I also realized that underpricing myself wasn't helping. Creating one video takes time—planning the concept, filming, editing, revisions, and communicating with clients. It's okay to start with beginner rates, but don't forget to value your work as you gain experience.

For those who are still building their portfolio, here's what worked for me:

• Create content even if it's unpaid at first.
• Organize your portfolio by niche (beauty, tech, lifestyle, etc.).
• Keep improving your editing and storytelling skills.
• Send outreach messages consistently because clients rarely come overnight.

Landing clients takes time, and everyone's journey looks different. Some get their first client in a few weeks, while others take months—and that's completely normal.

and when pala ang open ng shifters/transferees? May scholarship po ba na pwede agad applyan once u passed your exam? I'm from a low income fam lang po and studying in dlsu is my dream tlga since then 🥹 Was able to take entrance exam but did not pass, though rigorously ako nag-review non
