- I Am The Writing On The Wall, The Whisper In The Classroom. Without These Things, I Am Nothing - 2/31
For day 2, I’ve decided to cover one of my personal favourite horror movies Candyman as expertly played by Tony Todd.
It’s a movie that has so much to say about collective belief, historical trauma, and systemic racial violence that gives rise to urban legends and their relative staying power.
It truly pushed the boundaries of what was common in horror movies and twisted your expectations. Imagine the feeling of going into the movie prepared to hate the villain and then feeling so sympathetic towards his plight, being tortured and murdered purely based on the love of a white woman. To be vilified for being a human being and having emotions. I believe this movie has just as much to say today as it did back then, by showing us the polices lack of involvement with Cabrini Green as it was classed as low priority zone. Using the fear of an urban legend to convince those around you to be afraid (granted Candyman does prove to be real but even still). I will always recommend this movie, even the sequels purely because you get more of Tony Todd in this ionic role and he never gets less scary as the movies go on, I’d even go as far as saying checking out the legacy sequel as I feel it does quite a bit with adding to the lore and mythos.
