[Hyprland] Introducing... Orbit Wallpaper Engine!

Orbit Wallpaper Engine v0.1.0 is here!

TL;DR: GLSL Shader Wallpapers for your desktop environment.

- Animated Intro and Exit commands
- GUI Settings Panel with control over animation speed and intro/exit curves
- Colour Remapping (with palette strength control)
- In app access to the repository of KDE Shader Wallpapers (https://github.com/y4my4my4m/kde-shader-wallpaper)

Hey all! A few days ago I posted my WIP rice in Hyprland using Noctalia and a custom GLSL shader wallpaper that I vibecoded. A lot of people asked for my dots, but more specifically people wanted the wallpaper and wanted to know how to achieve login and logout animations.

As a result things kinda ran away from me, I got really excited, and I basically scope creeped myself into a corner. I wasn't really prepared to share my dots at that point, and unfortunately I'm still not - but I've been building something a bit bigger than my initial plan just because I've been having so much fun.

So, whilst I'm still working on the more ambitious project, I got the shader wallpaper to a place where poeple can start to have some fun with it.

https://github.com/CleanShirtUK/orbit-wallpaper-engine

Note: this is eeeearly. I've run clean install tests on my machine but I don't have another machine available to test on. Proceed at your own risk!

Also... snuck in a little sneak peak of something else I've been working on as part of the bigger shell project at the end.

NOTE: Substantial AI usage made this happen. More details in the github.

I've just been locking and unlocking my pc repeatedly

I've spent the last few days tweaking my Fedora install to how I like and this has been the first time that I've not felt like Hyprland was a little bit limiting/frustrating in compared to a purely stacking workflow.

Quick summary:

- Specialised workspace behaviour that always reserves one blank workspace per monitor, and workspaces are visualised as vertical columns across two monitors. any window opened in the blank workspace automatically creates a new free workspace at the bottom of the stack, and tiles the window there

- Custom PS3-inspired animated wallpaper that responds to login, lock/unlock, and logout/shutdown commands, coordinating with Noctalia’s bar, dock, and the reserved blank workspaces visibility to provide the animations. I was specifically looking for something high contrast with motion, and this was what I came to figure out.

- HyprWindowShade is built from a custom path with a local patch for per-window shader effects. (https://github.com/ManofJELLO/HyprWindowShade).

- Hyprglass is absolutely beautiful

- All apps are matched to Noctalia colours so Hyprland borders and related UI elements follow the active Noctalia palette. That's not just Noctalia's standard templates, but other specific apps pull in the colours manually as they're updated from Noctalia

Some limitations - I love titlebars but had to disable because they were causing some artifacts on translucent windows. I've only just got it to a stable state, once I've lived with it for a bit and made some tweaks and adjustments, I'll publish my dots. Anyone who's interested in poking around them with the knowledge they're a bit of a state, feel free to PM and I'll ping you a link.

AI Disclosure: The overall setup and visual direction were designed by me, but AI was used extensively. Many of the more specialised functions and scripts were almost entirely AI-written.

Suggestions on Oddworld based naming conventions for homelab?

Very odd (and probably boring) post but I think the community might be able to provide some better suggestions than I have.

I’m about to basically nuke all my computers, move some things around and start fresh. I wanted to give all of the machines names and thought an Oddworld theme would work.

Here’s what I’ve thrown together - but are there any other suggestions?

- Main PC (gaming, testing. Physically the largest machine) - Mullock
- Proxmox server (medium sized, running all of my docker containers and storage) - Margaret
- MacBook Pro (stable, pick up and use computer that is my daily machine) - Aslik
- BC 250 (janky home steam machine) - Dripik
- Steam Deck - Phleg
- Miyoo Mini - Lulu

I feel like the first two worked quite well, and I went with Aslik as my thought process was FeeCo = stable/dependable… but thought it would be fun to put it to you fine folk to see if you had any better suggestions!

Which WatchOS Client?

Hi all! Looking for something to fulfill a very specific need. I’m looking for a WatchOS client that can handle offline sync and can shuffle playlists. I tried WRhythm but it completely freaked out when attempting to download music, and you had to keep the watch awake (which is easier said than done).

I then tried wristonic which is much better and less buggy - but it seems you can’t shuffle playlists. For me that’s a dealbreaker.

Any suggestions? I don’t wanna keep throwing £5 at apps and then hoping they work lol

Thank you!

Posting a solution I figured out after a lot of trial and error

Posting here in case anyone else comes acorss this. I was trying out Jellyfin Xtream plugin with my dispatcharr set up - however, after I got Dispatcharr epg doing exactly what I wanted (and running into issues using the plugin - content wasn't loading via jellyfin but direct in dispatcharr wasn't an issue) I uninstalled the plugin to attempt to use the M3U tuner..

Only to find that removing will leave the channels orphaned with no way of cleaning up and removing them!

Finally I fixed it by doing the following (some of this may be redundant - but it's what worked).

  1. Reinstall the Xtream Plugin
  2. Restart Jellyfin
  3. Sign back in to Dispatcharr via XC
  4. Uncheck ALL categories inside the Xtream plugin
  5. Run a full library scan
  6. Restart Jellyfin (again)
  7. Validate that channels are no longer appearing - they should not be there at this point
  8. Uninstall Xtream Plugin

A google search led me down a rabbithole of removing entries directly from the database via SQL - which is a terrible idea as many people on GitHub pointed out. Glad I avoided that catastrophe, and if it saves someone else hours of headaches, then its worth it

Where do I begin repairing?

Hi all,

I got a costway portable air conditioner off of amazon a couple years back when I was working in a conservatory. These days it gets very little use.... but last week, the fan just completely stopped spinning.

No errors or anything, just a slight hum when set to fan only mode. I checked the filters and all seems good so I'm wondering if the fan motor has crapped out.

The thing is, whilst I'm comfortable in taking things apart and having a look, I know there's aspects of AC that I really need to make sure I don't touch..

Is taking the unit apart to explore potential issues viable for someone with no experience? I'd hate to shell out another couple of hundred quid for a unit that gets used a few times a year, and even if I wanted to just buy another one, thats easier said than done in the UK atm

Best Dock & KVM Solution for WFH?

Hi all! Posting here as I'm not sure where best to post, but I think this sub may be best equipped dealing with the Macbook portion of the setup, given the restrictions with displaylink.

Machines:
- Macbook Pro M1 Pro
- Dell Latitude 5420
- Linux PC with dedicated GPU

Peripherals:
- Asus ProArt monitor (1920x1200@75hz)
- Asus gaming monitor (1920x1080@144hz)
- USB C Keyboard
- G604 Mouse
- Focusrite 2i2 Audio Interface
- Generic HP Webcam
- Launchkey mini MIDI Keyboard

9-5 I have my work laptop docked. My speakers are already hooked up to the audio interface. I use my Linux PC for general browsing at my desk, and also a bit of gaming on occasion. Usually I hook up the laptop whenever I want to work on some music or do some video editing.

My current setup is as follows:

- Dell WD19 USB-C Dock connected directly to displays
- Linux PC connected directly to the displays
- USB Switcher connected to webcam, KB/M, Audio Interface to switch between the dock and PC

This mostly works, but it's a little clunky. The USB switcher isn't the best quality and introduces quite a bit of noise to the interface (confirmed not present when attached directly). The ProArt does not have a one button switch for input switching, so you have to go menu diving. But the biggest frustration is that my Macbook has to have a separate HDMI connected directly to run the second display because of the dock limitations - it's just a bit of a pain in the arse.

In an ideal world I'd like a single box that handles both dock and KVM responsibilities - I've seen a few, however they typically expect both machines to be a laptop. Could potentially get around this with a USB C PCI-E card on the PC, but if there's a KVM that has one or two USB C inputs and an additional display + USB input for the PC, it would be ideal.

Any recommendations?

Finally Upgraded from iPhone 12 to 17 Pro Max, and didn't realise just how much better the camera would be

I finally got around to upgrading yesterday after months of telling myself I didn't need it. And for the most part, the experience is exactly what I expected - a few nice to haves here and there, significantly less sluggish, and now opening the camera app has a greater than 50% success rate (thanks to iOS 26 just nuking my old phones performance).

But man, the camera upgrade is a lot more significant than I was expecting. I knew that on paper, there were improvements, but it's honestly been insane discovering just how much better the camera is. And when using with the Leica app, I'm getting photos that are 90% of the way there in comparison to my Canon 200D, aaand I can shoot in RAW and pull my photo's in to Lightroom after.

I put off the upgrade because I was doomscrolling so much. But being able to have access to a camera like this at all times without having to lug a DSLR around is going to be a real game changer

Automated Playlist Export

Hi all,

I'm using rsync to sync my navidrome library to my iPod with Rekordbox. I know I can export m3u files from smart playlists in Navidrome by hitting the 'export playlist' button in the interface - but is there a way I can set up a batch job to routinely export the m3u's on a weekly basis so that I can keep the playlists up to date offline?

What are my odds of successfully appealing?

This morning at 3am I saw that they were closing two lanes on the M25 near clacketts. Other cars around me were doing 70 and I had to traverse two lanes and slow down to 40 from 70 - so I was trying to get in to the correct lane safely as a primary focus. I got flashed - as did the car behind me.

My argument is that crossing two lanes, surrounded by other cars travelling at 70, at 3am in the distance between two gantries would have been unsafe.

What are my chances here when the letter inevitably turns up?

Anyone finding U007 errors installing MKK on K4?

I've been at this all day and I cannot for the life of my figure out where I'm going wrong. Trying to get KUAL setup for KOReader, but I'm hitting the same wall repeatedly. I've tried various different combinations, resets, uninstalls etc. and I still can't get MKK installed.

I've just factory reset the unit again, and the only things I have done thus far are:

- Skipped setup so no Wifi creds are entered
- Used the K4 Jailbreak, which appears to work (the 'you are jailbroken' file is appearing)
- Added 'Update_mkk-20141129-k4-ALL_install.bin' to the root of the K4 and ran 'update your system' - this just fails with a U007 error and then reboots the Kindle

I feel like I'm tearing my hair out, what am I missing?

How long will it take for my poor credit history to no longer be of concern?

Hi all! after a very rocky few years, I will finally be debt free by the end of June, and can start squirreling away an emergency fund and start towards a deposit.

No CCJs on my record but I have been in a DMP for the last 2 years, and my payments with some of the lenders I had used recently are showing as 'missed' payments on Clearscore. There's just shy of £3k left by my calculations, and a decent bonus this year will clear the lot.

Based on my projections, I'm expecting to have an emergency fund and a deposit somewhere in the region of around £30k by summer 2029 - and that's without anything extra from a potential payrise as I step into a new role at work. We would love to get a house in the 350-400k region - and so would have that with our additional saving by December 2029.

Providing I keep my nose clean from a credit perspective (which is very much the plan, I already earn a decent amount more than when I got into the mess I'm in, spend less, and have plans to be better prepared for emergencies moving forward) - will I have enough of a buffer from these missed payments for my credit to no longer be a concern? Is there anything I can do between now and then to improve potential mortgage lenders view of my file? All I have is a £200 credit card that gets paid off in full every month, no other credit to my name at the moment.

I'm aware that adverse credit stays on your file for 6 years, but unsure how much of that is taken into account.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Automatic Playlist Generation for Music?

Hi all! I'm trying to reduce my reliance on my phone and subscriptions, so have been getting my music library organised and automated - here's my current setup:

- Lidarr w/ Usenet and slskd

- iPod 4th gen (flash modded) with Rockbox

- Simple script that rsyncs my music directory to my iPod

What's the best way to automate playlist creation on different 'vibes' similar to Spotify etc. that can be synced on my iPod? Ideally I'd like to just 'set and forget', so that when new music is added the playlists are also updated.

I've seen AudioMuse around, but haven't seen too much on how that would work with an offline playlist.

Any help would be massively appreciated! Thank you

Hi all!

Me and my fiancee did what we called 'book club' of an evening last year as a way for us to wind down before bed without staring at the TV, but still as a joint hobby.

It wasn't really a book club - it was more akin to when you read a book in school, with each of us taking it in turns to read a chapter aloud. She normally picks up a hard copy and I'll read a copy on my Kindle.

We really enjoyed John Marrs 'The One' - it was the perfect intersection of our interests. I've also read and enjoyed The Circle which was great.

We struggled to find another book after finishing The One and then life got in the way and we never picked it back up, so now I'm hoping to get a few books together to build a small backlog to get through.

I call out Midsommar specifically, because we both really enjoyed that film. But to add some curveballs, I thought I would throw in some of our respective interests, and would happily take any recs that intersect one or more of both of our interests. For her, I'll stick more to genre, and for me I'll list specific interests.

Her:

Thriller's
Horror
Cults
Slasher
Romance

Me:

Near Future Sci-Fi (think 'Black Mirror' - something plausible in the current world)
Technology
Music
Psychological Horror
Photography
Cars/Racing

Straight up Sci-fi and fantasy aren't worlds we can get immersed with - our ability to suspend disbelief isn't particularly great. We can however get behind supernatural horror if it's a bit more subtle - she believes in ghosts etc., and I at least find them interesting.

Looking forward to seeing what you can come up with, thank you!
