Modern Chemist (7th Ave)

I’m curious if anyone has shopped at this store? I know the front of the shop isn’t affiliated with the pharmacy in the back, but the cashier (maybe owner?) tossed some homophobic slurs at some guys that walked by while I was inside the store yesterday, which caused me to go elsewhere with my business.

Just curious if he’s the owner (white hair, gives retired cop vibes).

Dexcom failure rates

This chart shows aggregate data from 153 Dexcom sessions. Only 55% of sensors reached full wear (240+ hours), averaging about 187 hours of wear and a 14% failure rate.

Post-recall sentiment

Hey all, I’m currently a tandem user but was just approved to try omnipod because I’ve always been curious to give it a shot.

Just curious, how did the recent recalls affected your trust in omnipod?

I still hear of many people getting started on omnipod, so it doesn’t seem to have changed user sentiment much, but I’d love to hear from the community here.

full disclosure, I built an inventory management and recall checker that was really popular here back in May but I really fell in love with the community (along with the OS-AID folks).

It’s part of the reason why I wanted to see how people are recovering from the recall and whether perception of Insulet has shifted since then.

Thanks!

Tandem x2 alert frustration

I’m frustrated with Tandem’s mobile app — it barely stays connected and takes a good 30+ seconds to connect to my pump when I try to bolus. I typically end up taking my pump out of my pocket and bolusing manually.

But today, my pump died at 4:45am while I was sleeping and I woke up without a single alarm on my phone. No low battery alerts, no shutdown alerts.

I went 2+ hours without insulin and the app that was supposed to send me alerts did absolutely nothing.

Worthless.

Water tasting different?

Has anyone in the North Slope area noticed your tap water tasting different the last few days? I just started noticing a more metallic/plastic-like taste and it’s a little strange.

My experience at ADA

On a whim, I went to ADA to network and test out a few new devices. Here are my takeaways, but I’d love to hear from anyone else who was there!

  1. The event was generally jubilant but was underscored by the tossing out of the top ADA researchers, so it was interesting to see national drama playing out in real time. There were pockets of people whispering and gossiping everywhere, clearly talking about the event.
  2. I think the new minimed pump is ugly! It feels like an electric toothbrush and creates a really phallic shape if you put it in your pocket.
  3. There were a large number of early-detection companies exhibiting this year (T1D Scout, TrialNet, and Sanofi all had booths that offered oral-swab testing for early detection. Hopefully this means there will be competition that will make the tests more affordable.
  4. There are rumors that Medtronic is about to lose exclusivity to the 7-day extended wear infusion set, which is exciting for every other tubed pump system. I'd be thrilled to use a 7-day set with my Tandem system.
  5. I also heard that Twiist is current in talks with Dexcom, but as with anything in the med world, this will probably take while. I really loved the Twiist demo and the size of the pump is incredible (especially for 300u) but I'm currently locked in with Dexcom since I have 15-20 sensors in my backstock and don't want to be forced to switch to Libre or Eversence.

I gleaned all of this from only a day and a half, but would love to hear from anyone else who attended!

edit: sorry the formatting got all messed up, I was editing on mobile and it went haywire. just fixed on my laptop.

Stash: Recall Scanner for iOS

Hi all, I try not to self-promote on here, but I think that time is of the essence in making sure you know if your Omnipod lots are affected. Many people are about to start traveling for the summer and this recall — like any other recall — adds undue stress to our already stressful lives.

Two months ago, I built this feature in the app for the original Omnipod recall. Yesterday, I added the additional 200+ lots to the checker, allowing anyone with an iPhone to scan the GS1 barcode on their boxes to see if they have been affected. Similarly, any Stash users who have already added their inventory will have their affected items automatically flagged.

I would urge anyone scrambling to find their lot numbers to use the scanner, to save them time, effort and anxiety.

Mods, sorry for posting, but the app is free and collects no user data so I hope I can get a pass on this to help get the word out for something that will help in this situation.

A small victory

Just celebrating a small win; I built a supply inventory app for people with diabetes. I'm type 1 diabetic, and built this for myself after running out of critical supplies while caring for my newborn. After about 2 months of iterating, I was able to demo it for a few diabetes influencers and blogs, and the first few pieces of media were published on Monday.

My wife just stumbled upon the remains of 3 birds, near the 3rd street entrance to the park. They were beheaded and stuffed into a clay pot. Is this a Parks Department issue? NYPD? Do I just let it go and not say a word? Truly bizarre and I guess I don't know who to tell because it's rather disturbing and I have not stumbled across this before.
