Dexcom G7 Apple Watch Compatibility Without iPhone

Hello everyone!

I have a younger cousin who was just diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic. His mom is trying to determine whether a standalone apple watch with a data plan would work well or if he needs an iPhone as well.

Thanks!

Built a little bedside screen for a colleague that just shows the number, so the phone can stay on the charger at night

A colleague of mine has T1D, and the thing she described as quietly wearing her down wasn't the highs or the lows — it was the ritual. Wake up, find the phone, unlock it, wait for the app, squint at a bright screen at 3am. Every single night.

So I spent a few weekends building a small screen for her nightstand that does exactly one thing: show the current value, the trend arrow and the last few hours as a graph. Nothing to unlock, nothing to swipe. During the day it sits there like a clock; at night it either dims right down or switches to a dim amber display that doesn't wreck your night vision. It talks to Dexcom Share, the same way the follower apps do.

Two things surprised me while building it. First, how much difference it makes to just glance at a number instead of performing a whole sequence of actions to see it — she checks more often now, and worries less. Second, the official developer route from Dexcom is deliberately delayed by an hour in the US and three hours in the EU, which makes it useless for anything live. Share is the only realistic path, which explains why the whole DIY corner of this world is built on it.

To be very clear: it's a hobby build and absolutely not a medical device. Values come through Share so they can lag, drop out or be plain wrong. Every actual decision still happens on her official app or with a fingerstick. The very first screen the thing shows says exactly that, because I wanted the device itself to keep reminding us both.

What I'm really curious about is how the rest of you handle nights. Does your phone live on the nightstand, or somewhere you have to reach for it? Would you want a screen like this to alarm on its own, or does a second alarm source just add noise to something your app already handles? And for anyone who's been at this a lot longer than me — what would you put on a screen like that which I probably haven't thought of?

(Everything I wrote is public under an open licence for anyone who likes tinkering, but I'll keep links out of the post — happy to point people the right way if the mods are fine with it.)

Anyone being HARASSED by these obnoxious alerts? I hit “dismiss”, they come back. I hit “learn more”, still no option to select, “Yeah, I get it, please stop bothering me!!!” WTF!!

My latest round with Abbott about a bad sensor

I filed a replacement request on August 8th. On the 14th (this past Friday), I checked on the tracking number but didn't find that a replacement had been shipped. I called and spoke to somebody who should not work as a phone rep. His accent was very thick so I had to ask him to repeat what he said several times. There were even a few times that I couldn't figure out what he said so I let the conversation go forward.

He kept putting me on hold then would come back to ask more questions. After dealing this this for about ½ hour he comes back on the line to ask me to confirm my address for the third time. I blew up at him.

Today, I finally got an email from Abbott saying that a replacement was on the way. Apparently calling him a "fkkkng idiot" worked. 🤣 I wouldn't suggest doing what I did but at least I didn't demand to speak to a supervisor just to tell that person to get the guy off phone support for the U.S.

Feeling like a horrible mom.

Last night my daughter’s sensor expired, she was in good range when I changed it. After the warm up she was still in good range 80-85. This morning suddenly after breakfast she shot up super high, gave her 4 units for breakfast she was at 130. Pump is still intact yet she continued to climb into the no reading zone HIGH after giving an additional 2 units. Gave her an injection of 4 units and when her cgm said 400 I did a finger prick and it said 321!!! That’s 80 under, so are you telling me that her showing in range before bed and this morning she was actually in critical LOW range?! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️😭😭😭 I feel like I can’t win with these sensors. Usually when I calibrate they are always only a few points off, the one time I don’t check immediately it’s 80 lower?!! I just keep beating myself up and thinking how grateful I am she woke up fine this morning. Now I’m terrified and will probably finger prick several times a day. Anyone have anything similar happen? Could she really have been that low or were the starting readings accurate and it just couldn’t keep up this morning?

Frustrated using Dexcom G7!

I’m just venting, but ever since I started using the Dexcom G7, it has been a complete mess! It doesn’t even last the full 10 days, and I’m ALWAYS getting an error message! I know I’ve had issues with the Dexcom G6 before, but NEVER like this!
Within five days, I went through THREE Dexcom G7s! 😩
I honestly want to go back to the G6, but of course, they’ve stopped making them. 😒😩😢😢😡

Dexcom Stelo how did it drop so fast

I'm new to this but my functional medicine doctor suggested I try it due to some weird lab results.

I drank 6 ounces of fruit punch flavored body armour at 12:06 right at the time the app says 134. Now an hour later at 13:00 it's 99

I had a mild headache the whole time it was around 120 (pretzels - suprise to me). Now that it is back under 100 my headache is gone.

How did the body armour cause a sudden drop? When everything I read online talks about body armour making it initially spike

I do not have diabetes, my A1C was fine, however I am currently 37 weeks pregnant

Dexcom G7

First time using a CGM and not a big fan of needles, but I’m used to using the finger sticker. Unit failed during warmup after three minutes. Is this a common occurrence? If it is, I think I might pass.

With full gratitude to G6, today upgraded to G7!

Today, August 18, 2026, I took off my very last Dexcom G6 sensor after a full year of using it (starting back on August 18, 2025). I’m officially making the switch to the G7! I am incredibly grateful for this little G6 sensor and so happy with the numbers we’ve achieved together.

Honestly, looking at the Dexcom Clarity reports and seeing that straight line was the most rewarding visual treat—it truly helped me stay on track and reach my goals.

Also, I’m so thankful for everyone on this platform who shares their T1D journey,

Sensor is warming up longer then usual

Hey folks, sensor is taking 90minutes and more now, still now warmed up.

Any chance it might still get it going?

Or is this sensor lost?

UPDATE: did restart everything, deleted it from app, disconnected it from Bluetooth, did re-establish everything and now it's getting data 🥰😍

G7 vs 15 day G7

I'm finishing my supply of G6's which I returned to using when I grew frustrated with the G7 last year. Saw many comments that the G7 is the most reliable sensor but I would prefer the 15 day G7 if it's reliability is comparable to the G7.

Two sensor failures in a row

Two of my G7 sensors failed in a row within 3 days. Do you all think I just got a bad batch? I have never had that happen in over 1 year of switching to Dexcom from Libre due to insurance change. My Libre sensors have never failed like this. I tried contacting customer service but gave up because it was too tedious.

Dexcome distributor charging for sensor and transmitter ?

Good afternoon.

I am frustrated with my provider since there is only 1 where I live and I notice that on my health insurance sometimes i see the request for the sensor and sometimes for the senso PLUS the transmitter that they price at 800.00,

Anyone else notice anything like this? I am wondering since the charges are fluctuating all over the place.

Brand New User

I am brand new T2, received little info from doctor other than “eat lots of veggies”.

So I put on a G7 the other day to see what is going on inside……..that spike is an orange theory workout.

I’m pretty sure I have it into more muscle than fat but I’ll swap it in 8 days and find a better spot.

Doctor said I’m “controlled T2” but everything I have read says stay under 5.5 on a fasted reading but I am NEVER that low unless I’ve not eaten for 6 hours.

How do I start this journey the right way? I am under 50, non smoker, do not drink, careful with food, workout 3x a week minimum, could lose 15lbs but not more than that I’d look unwell.

advice for getting sensors to stick (g7)

I started using the Dexcom G7 less than a week ago and I have had two sensors just entirely fall off within 24 hours of putting them on. I’ve tried the over patches they fall off too. I always wipe my arm down with alcohol. I always make sure it’s dry. I always do it so there’s at least 12 hours in between when I put it in and when I’m going to take a shower I literally don’t know what I’m doing wrong.
does anyone have any advice or tricks that I could possibly try? I never really had any issues with using the G6 on my abdomen, but this arm thing with the G7 is really killing me. I haven’t even had anything snag on it or anything.

⚠️ The DANGERS of iOS Critical Alerts

Edit: the fact that this post and my replies are getting downvoted like crazy tells you everything you need to know about the people obsessed with high glucose critical alerts for no articulable reason. Why does the fact that MANY (dare I say the majority?) people don’t like the constant interruptions bother “you”?! Thank you to all the adults here who are expressing the same sentiments I describe below.

Edit 2: for all the trolls (not sure if that’s even the right description for you people): the ratio of downvotes to upvotes HEAVILY favors UPVOTES. when I said that the post and my replies are getting “downvoted like crazy” I meant that a small number of people are crazily following me around posts and comments to downvote because… it bothers them that there are people who don’t like Critical Alerts for high glucose?!

Unfortunately, I’ve spoken with hundreds of individuals who are faced with the choice of being harassed by the Dexcom app all day or turning off alerts entirely and suffering with bad glucose because they couldn’t handle the constant Critical Alerts for slightly out of range glucose. They just want to be reminded about their current glucose with a regular/subtle notification (as was the case up until 4-5 months ago.)

Before anyone responds that it’s a necessary medical alert - no it’s not. I want to receive subtle reminders every 5 min about where my glucose is holding. I don’t want or need to receive what Apple defines as “critical alerts for medical or security emergencies” because my glucose is at 170 mg/dL.

Raising the alert threshold or turning off alerts entirely is obviously (or not so obviously because I’ve seen this suggested a million times before) not an option either because then you’re not receiving ANY alerts for glucose at 170 mg/dL or whichever threshold you prefer.

I have no problem with people who like receiving every notification as a Critical Alert but just because YOU like it, that doesn’t make it right or necessary. It’s also so wrong to belittle what is clearly a serious issue because it doesn’t affect you.

With regard to Urgent Low or Urgent Low Soon or even standard Low alerts - by all means! Enable Critical Alerts.

The solution is very simple: include a “Critical Alert” toggle within each alert type (High, Low, etc.) that can be enabled based on each users preference.
