DQ 1/2 Japanese OG: Password was the path of pain.

Credits of the photos are at the bottom.

In the Japanese original version of DQ I & II you weren't able to save, and you had to note down the password each time to resume next time. In DQ1 it was 20 letters at max, and in DQ2 it could be 52 letters long! (Having more items results in a longer password.)

In that era kids often recorded wrongly, losing the entire progress of the last play. DQ2 OG was notoriously difficult, so password failure was really heartbreaking.

For what's worse, the screen was CRT, so it looked blurry! Some Japanese letters can look confusing on CRT like ば (ba) vs ぱ (pa)—notice the upper-rightt dots vs circle. Perhaps わ (wa) vs ね (ne), or め (me) vs ぬ (nu) might be confusing.

In DQ2 inputting the password is a pain. (You use the D-pad letter by letter.) That's why its theme is Love Song Sagashite = Only Lonely Boy, the happiest track of the game, to alleviate players's suffering.

However there are positive sides too, especially for DQ2: (i) Passwords didn't remember health. All characters are resurrected with full HP & MP. This was relieving, in particular e.g. after that long dungeon. (ii) Chests and others reset too. So in the later game you often farmed >!the whackolyte in Midenhall to get a new Lightning Staff.!< This unforgiving title had unintentionally exquisite balance with these factors.

In Japan DQ 1 & 2 were released for Famicom (= Japanese NES) and MSX 1 & 2 (home hobby PCs). Yes, the first game came on 27 May 1986.

My first vertical-lane game confuses me.

Muse Dash is my first rhythm game, and tho I'm not good at it I'm proceeding through it, now 55hrs in.

Now I started Vivid/Statis, a free Steam game. I knew there're many vertical-lane rhythm games...but damn, I can't hit correct keys at all! XD I'll soon get accustomed, sure, but I didn't expect this. (The above photo is from the Steam store.)

# I also tried the demo of Unbeatable (i.e. [White Label]). It's very similar to Muse Dash, but I didn't like it, even though most love it.

What's your experience/history of rhythm games?

TIL of Grand National, one of the top steeplechases.

As a resident of Japan I've never heard of Grand National. I have a vague image of steeplechases, hurdles, water, hedges etc, but in Japan steeplechases as gamble are not held. (As pure sports some people do it.)

Oh my TIL Grand National is the biggest steeplechase in the UK and >!Sand National is a pun on it! I reached Gallopolis 5 years ago!<! XD

# And I'm still in Act 2. (Don't ask me why.) >!I've postponed Hotto and Gallopolis to read full party talks. Serena finally reunited, so I began the Hotto event.!<

Auridia is bundled at Fanatical, 6h, 98% positive game. Kyle "liked a lot"!!

Auridia is a small MV game for Steam, released in Sep 2025. It was made by a solo developer Reed, and the studio name is Norseboar Games. Auridia is its first game. This review says it took 6 hours or so to get 100%

So far it has only 143 reviews, so not yet well known. However 98% reviews are positive! At this sub Kyle Thompson said as a reply "I liked this game a lot. Picked it up after seeing it recommended on this sub and I ended up liking it way more that I thought I would." ;)

It's now bundled at Fanatical. You have to buy 3 games, and the total cost is $7.5. (Bundle seems to last until 17 Jun, but not sure.)

BTW Momodora: Reverie under the Moonlight is for $2 and Rusted Moss for $8 at Steam, each for the historically lowest price. (And La-Mulana 1/2 and Hyper Light Drifter are also on sale.)

Hope this helps. Enjoy!

# I began Shin Megami Tensei: Synchronicity Prologue. It's old-school and really basic, yet incredibly good.

Definitely co-op games you enjoyed solo?

Some games are assumed/almost universally thought/as everyone says/whatever almost co-op (or multi more genenally) only.

Do you have any such games you played solo and really liked?

# I played Spelunker Party solo, a stage based platformer. It seems to be intended mainly as a party game. IMHO its first half is good and I liked. But the later game becomes tedious chore for solo, and have to be serious as a co-op, so not a party game. Either way it's not fun.

Rusted Moss: The developer explains in detail

The linked post was done in Feb 2024, but I think it deserves a link.

I love sincere developers. ;)

Which Reddit sub to post "Japanese TV program about indie devs"?

There was a Japanese TV program (no English) about indie game devs in Shibuya. I posted about it at r/JRPG, but it was deleted for sub's rule violation.

Are there any subs appropriate for this topic, except some game development ones?

My original post was this:

(no English; probably needs VPN)

There's a Japanese TV program, available here at tver.jp and here at Fuji TV, the broadcasting station, featuring indie game developers in Shibuya. (More precisely the first part of this episode.)

The program is titled 界隈ほーる ~偏愛の穴に落ちてみた~, and the episode 第4回 インディーゲーム界隈・ミニ四駆界隈 ~ファイターさんのその後編~・界隈のタネ.

You need VPN to watch it, and it's in Japanese only. The former link expires on 13 May, but after that you'll be able watch it on subscription at the latter link. (Even paid, you might need VPN.)

One underrated good point of DQ11 is "Story so far", which is really elaborately prepared. After you beat the Sniflheim boss in act 2, the one I show in these pics can be read only for an instance, until >!the hero speaks to Erik!<!. See the 3rd photo. (IIUC there's no autosave this moment.)

BTW 1: I'm playing on "a hard mode", where all monsters are strong. (W/ tripes and no-exp from weak monsers.) On my first try of this boss I got wiped out, so I spent a lot of money to upgrade equipment. :p Fortunately most >!(physics related) debuffs!< work. So far B>!ooga!< was most difficult.

BTW 2: I bought DQ11 OG for Steam 6 years ago, but I'm still in Act 2! (Probably I'm the slowest player on the earth.) I'd been away from this game for 370 days, but I restarted recently, this time resolute to beat. XD

▲ 261 r/Steam

I mean the Store page shows the "Steam cloud" icon, but I think cloud should be the default, and should instead emphasize games without cloud.

I lost the Undertale save file without noticing it's not cloud, at 80% progress I guess. This time I noticed Wandersong isn't either.

@mod: I know this is only marginally related to JRPG, but readers here are often interested in Japanese games, and I think this post can help. Sorry if you don't agree.

This track is really easy for Lv 7 (probably easiest) but anyway I didn't expect to get Silver and FC on the first attempt.

I'm not good at action games, and I thought it'd take a while to get the "Silver for a Lv 7 track" achivement.

Getting gold on Lv 1 is still not easy at all for me. I often fail to do so. :p

My last trophy is 100% in Lv 6, but I'm sure I won't make it within a year.

This seems too good. I forged 6 Full Moon Rings, and got three +3, two +2 and one +1, of course without using perfectionist pearls.

I spammed triple whammy, often resulting in a critical hit. I don't know if triple whammy is magical, but probably not.

# Probably I didn't need this many rings. :p

GOG is adding some Polish games to its preservation program, and until 8 May, 6 are free, and three (Robbo, Adventures of Robbo and Heartlight) are puzzle games. See this page for the full detail.

Other free games are Electro Man (2d shooter), Citadel Remonstered (FPS) and MaSzyna (Polish train sim). MaSyzna is free also at Steam.

BTW Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure will be free at Epic from 8 May for a week. See this post for some more info.

Hope this helps. Enjoy!

Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure (Steam page, Epic page) will be free at Epic from 8 May for a week!

Don't worry, if any. This is a contract, not piracy or something unfair. Epic pays some amount money, and the publisher has agreed. This is enabled by Epic's big income from Fortnite etc.

Almost any PC can run this I think. (There's a demo at Steam, so you can try now.) Don't miss this occasion!

Many puzzle games suppose that you take notes, pen-and-paper and/or digital.

I know OTOH there's the World Memory Championships, of which participants memorize incredible amounts of various things.

So the question. Does anyone play puzzle games completely without notes, relying only on your memory? (I do for e.g. 15x15 crosswords, but probably can't do sudoku.)

BTW I've just beaten RYB, which is completely free on Steam. It's a nice, completely logical puzzle. In a few puzzles of it I used paper. EDIT As replied, the same dev also provides 20 Small Mazes for free. It's more playful and somewhat jocular, but it's also highly recommendable.
