I found a cheap trick to make game menu more interesting/less ugly. I added a video on the BG :D I am no designer so I had no idea how to make it better. What I got is on the video below, some details in description, original menu state in comments

I have an autobattler. I started a simulation with equal enemies forces, recorded it in Unity and cut to 90 seconds to not inflate the binary too much. Video parameters and random thoughts:

  • Use heavy blur
  • 30 FPS is enough
  • For my game, a bit of slowdown was very helpful
  • 91 seconds MP4, codec HEVC (default in CapCut), 720p. In total 32.6 MB. Actually, a lower resolution would also work but 30 MB is ok. Maybe I supply a separate one/a very compressed one for web version
  • Starting at a random point makes it way less repetitive. Just don't let it start closer than ~10 seconds before the clip ends otherwise it would go to fade out too fast
  • Fade in and fade out made in CapCut with some effects I liked. You can see them on the video

Note, my menu was (and partially is) ugly due to buttons layout. I am still unhappy with the analytics and wishlist stickers. But now it looks way less amateurish I think

More data to "Major updates on itch DO work" post + one weird observation about updating visual assets

Added Referrer-Visits table + timeline of influential changes + my overall stats for the game

(I would put this info in a comment but it is not allowed to do so)

About the weird thing.

If I am not mistaken, around 1.05 I updated the page - changed the colors and uploaded the visual assets like background. I don't know if it was the exact date, cannot find any notes. But I remember that my views went reeeeeeally low after that. Maybe it is a coincidence and people were tired of seeing the game.

But I know that back in the day (end of April) I could find my game in the top charts. Like on the "top incrementals" list. I was not high, places around 120-150 but I did get constant traffic from there. I don't get any visits since that unfortunate update of mine.

So I will never update visual assets on the page after going live :D better have an ugly page then no visits haha. Capsule and screenshot updates did not have such an effect

Maybe it was just a glitch, no idea, was just very weird to suddenly disappear from everywhere

Major updates on itch DO work

I pushed the new alpha on itch.io and there is a lot of organic views again. The spike in downloads is due to providing Mac OS and windows builds

Also I am getting 2-3x more wishlists on Steam daily. So always include wishlist CTA there :)

Btw, despite having UTM set up on all the buttons, Steam still shows almost nothing, no idea why. But I am 98% sure that all the extra wishlists are coming from itch, I was very inactive everywhere else lately and did not update tags and trailers

Note. Major updates don't work always. I don't know why. Ie last time I had my major update (with a ton of fixes, new mechanics, new in game upgrades) it brought me no traffic. This time, apart from having new mechanics, I also did a large redesign. Maybe it helped

Incremental RTS is alpha. Available for free on Web, Mac OS, and Windows (itch.io link inside, rating 4.64)

Hi all!

My game Incremental RTS is now in a shape that I finally like and want to share here :D

Platforms: Web, MacOS and Windows (if you have Windows pls let me know how it runs. I only have potato-quality laptop)

Playable link: https://i-am-happy-to-see-you.itch.io/incremental-rts

The game is a mixture of Real Time Strategy (think Total Annihilation) and Idle/Incremental. You can expect ~25 levels, 100 upgrades and 16 different units. Total play time might be from 2 to 4 or even 6 hours if you don't rush.

I "work" as a solo dev, meaning I do everything on my own

Dunno what has happened but my itch CTR has been steadily growing in the last weeks and went from originally ~1.5% to 5.25%. It hasn't been so good since lunch

I am super happy about it but I wonder what was the reason. I did have the major update + new capsule on the 5.04 but it did not have any effect back then it seems. I think the capsule update did change the things as CTR slowly grew from ~1.5% at the lowest point to ~3.3% but the recent jump is interesting.

Still a way to go back to the original highs with hundreds of daily plays. But perhaps constantly making the game better does attract players.

Life is a kind of incremental game in the end
