Me and Jeff Welsh agreed to trade his restored Hh Scott 299b for my repaired Conrad Johnson preamp.

We both repair Hifi, because of this I trusted his judgement and made the decision to go forward with the trade based on his pictures and description alone. I understand my fault in this.

He claimed it had been meticulously gone through and was in great shape.

After getting home I found that there was an oscillation while in stereo mode, the output terminals were cracked and vulnerable to shorting , and other internal phenolic components are broken risking additional shorting.

None of these flaws were shown in any of the pictures he sent me of the internal components and work done. Make of this what you will.

After messaging him about the issues he admitted that this was true, said I was whining, and blocked me before I could respond. I believe his response is an indication of his character.

While it is true that the unit is repairable , and I will repair it.. I would not have made the trade if he was honest about this units condition

I am not naively thinking amplifiers don’t get sold with dead channels as “working “ just because the lights come on.. I know this happens all the time. But it is most often Not malicious. It is the combination of his knowledge as a tech, his withholding of obviously relevant information of the damage , his reaction when informed , and my inability to continue communication with him that has prompted me to make this write up.

There’s not many techs left. And I feel passionately that this kind of behavior can’t be tolerated . There’s nothing worse than a client who’s afraid of being ripped off because the last tech was someone like Jeff welsh.

I can click and get power to dash, headlights etc

The fuel cut solenoid clicks

When I engage the key all the way, it won’t turnover until I give it gas. It can run with gas , but when I take my foot off it either immediately dies , or starts idling incredibly rough. Choppy and slow. If I give it more gas and let off, it will die again and backfire out of the carb.

I’m getting power to the dash but my secondary wire from positive battery to the fuse box is a weak connection. Due to my getting power , I believe this to be fine for now.

I left my multimeter at work

It’s been running perfectly , drove to the airport yesterday … ran into this issue this morning and am just getting started with the diagnosis.

I’m noticing some oil seems to be slowly leaking from the rear half moon. I can’t see very well back there though.

I’m thinking the alternator could be dead? I had a pretty big accidental stall the other day.

I can’t get it to idle long enough to check timing etc .

The story as I am told it:

-She forgot to lock our apt when she left for work and remote locked the laptop from her phone.

- remote lock was stuck in “pending”

- when she got home she opened the laptop, it was in recovery mode . It was not connected to WiFi.

-No available buttons are clickable on the screen.

-At one point it connected to wifi, started the alarm which she was able to disable from her phone. It is still in recovery mode.

Additional context about the laptop…
The power button does not work, so the force restart options to exit recovery mode aren’t working.

The screen does not work. She uses a monitor.

My thought at this point would be to let the laptop run out of battery , and have it reboot upon charging it again.

Anyone else run into this?
The main goal is to keep her data and music projects safe on the laptop.
