Democracy is an illusion.

We are raised to believe that the UK is a sovereign democracy. We vote, we change governments, and we expect our elected representatives to deliver the future we chose.

But it’s a total illusion.

The real power doesn’t sit in the House of Commons. It sits with the Treasury and, ultimately, the global financial markets. If a democracy votes for a radical shift—whether that is properly funding public services, taxing the ultra-wealthy fairly, or massive green investment—the markets launch immediate financial warfare. They crash the currency, spike mortgage rates, and threaten capital flight until the elected government surrenders.

Defenders of this system call these markets a "guardrail" against "populism." They claim lenders are just protecting their assets and keeping us safe from hyperinflation.

That is a lie.

Calling markets a neutral "guardrail" is just a polite way of saying ordinary people cannot be trusted to run their own country. Markets aren't neutral; they have a strict, biased ideology. They demand deregulation, low corporate taxes, and the starvation of our public services to maximize elite profits. When markets crash the economy—like they did in 2008—the public pays the price through a decade of austerity, while the financial elite gets bailed out.

True democracy means a nation has the absolute right to chart its own path, even if it carries economic risk. If a government cannot pass the laws its people voted for without asking permission from currency traders in London or Wall Street, we do not live in a democracy.

We live in an economic colony run for the benefit of global capital. We are kept in perpetual chains by external forces, and it is time we started admitting that our votes don't matter until we smash the cage of global finance.
