Is this… supposed to be like this? Why is the junction box empty?

Is this… supposed to be like this? Why is the junction box empty?

Trying to hang a new ceiling fan and uncovered this. The new plate is round with 12, 3, 6, and 9 o’clock screws, so I’ll be missing one since I can’t screw… into.. an empty box.

Picked this up at goodwill today because I thought my FIL would love it. Any ideas?

Solved!

I wanted to add some context here that makes this specific find very serendipitous: my father in law spent his early 20s playing violin in the symphony in holland. His mother was a German Jew who fled the holocaust when she was 12 years old. He’s spent the last decade earning back his family’s German citizenship and this year he secured it for himself, his brothers, his children, and his grandchildren.

I had no idea what this was when I picked it up, I plucked it off the floor because it was titled Memory of Holland and I figured he had a million of those.

Thanks for your help gang! (I also snagged an original Charles Lapicque lithograph that must have been from the same collection!)

I can’t tell if the signature in pencil reads Filzer or Zilzer, but the etching right above (in the painting) looks very much like Zilzer. Gyula Zilzer? I know he did etchings.

Would mean a lot to my Jewish FIL. Thank you!

Non-traditional students at Reed? (read: old.)

Hello! I'm an old (34) looking to potentially transfer to Reed. I'm a normal, leftist, social person.

I'm aware that the majority of the student body is 15 years younger than me, but are there any older students on campus? I don't think it necessarily matters if there aren't, I'm just curious!

Alternatives for A4 paper refills?

Hi friends! I'm looking for a good alternative to the A4 ruled paper refills. I've been using Midori A4 notebooks but now I can only find them A5. Soft cover obvi and would LOVE if they were 8.3x11.7 like the OG paper refills :)

Thank you thank you!

Grandma (83) is getting a laparoscopic radical hysterectomy tomorrow morning, just looking for some reassurance.

My grandmother is my mother for all intents and purposes. My best friend and one in a million (grandmas are the best) She’ll get a laparoscopic hysterectomy in the morning to scoop out an aggressive tumor. Her primary cleared her for surgery after blood work and an EKG and she’s got a great surgeon. Just looking for some reassuring anecdotes. Thank you for reading and sending all my love to you beautiful women.

Where can I submit a complaint about all of the online-only classes?

There are so many classes I want to take that I want to learn from someone IRL (physics and archaeology for example). I'm so confused as to what all of these gigantic campuses/new buildings are for if not in person teaching? I'm pissed. Help.

Grandma (83) diagnosed with uterine cancer. The waiting is agonizing. Venting. Scared.

My grandma (mother for all intents and purposes) is a spry, active, intelligent woman with so much life left in her. She’s been experiencing pain for months and the cancer was only found after her primary sent her to a kidney specialist. Her biopsy revealed an “aggressive” tumor. Her PET scan is scheduled for next Friday and the waiting game is agonizing and infuriating.

I don’t know what anything means, and I don’t know what to do. I’m out of state but she has a robust support system within her church with tons of people vying to help out in any way possible. She plans on getting a radical hysterectomy, but at her age even surgery worries me.

My (estranged) mother has been down to visit her. I’d like to be there for the surgery and I know at some point we’ll need to see each other. It just feels like everything got turned upside down and I’m so worried and stressed and anxious about a myriad of things I can’t even pinpoint. I know she is not young and I was not/am not operating under the delusion that she’ll be around for another 30 years, but I don’t want to have to begin imagining my life without her.

These feel like selfish and silly things to say, others have it so much worse, but I just needed to say them. I’m so scared and frazzled. Thank you for reading.
