How to secure my own funding as an average candidate

Hello, I am a recent graduate (BSc.) and am applying for my masters in Canada. I've cold-emailed ~15 profs for supervision already, and out of the 4 who got back to me, they all asked ME about funding and when I said I don't have any, they seemed to have just lost interest.

I'm seriously worried now about not getting a spot for my masters because I don't come with my own funding, and no way to really get it. I'm a domestic candidate, 3.85 gpa, and I have research experience at the government level + more work experience (less research oriented) at another company; I have both valid research experience (public sector) and experience in the private sector.

So I am just left scratching my head because I thought I had a pretty competitive profile, but every time I finally get them to sit down and talk with me, they ask the funding question and I just give a generic answer that i'll reach out to orgs who may be interested in our research areas and see if they're open to funding us. And every prof after that just ghosts me.

So, i'm asking for advice on

  1. Is it actually realistic to cold outreach to orgs who align on research areas, and ask them for funding?
  2. Has anyone been successful at accomplishing #1 and how did you do it?
  3. If I can't get funding this way, then how do I get into grad school since every prof seems to immediately lose interest when they find out I don't have my own funding?

How to do outreach for funding to external orgs as an average candidate

MSc in Earth Sciences fall 2027

Hello! I am currently in conversations with a PI in the earth sciences faculty and heavily leaning towards starting my masters in earth sciences (thesis based) and I wanted to ask those who are currently in the program, or finished the program about their experiences.

I'm also curious about experiences working with this PI. I don't want to name drop them here, but for anybody familiar with the earth sciences faculty, does anybody have thoughts on which PIs are great to work with, and which one students to steer away from?

I'm a little bit concerned as I looked at ratemyprof for this PI and they have really bad reviews. But I assume their skills as a prof/lecturer is different vs working with them as a grad student.

Any advice for this program would be appreciated.

Masters in earth sciences program - application process & finding a supervisor

Can anybody who has experience applying to the thesis based masters in earth & atmospheric sciences tell me about their admissions profile and the application process? is the admission decision more dependent on ranking candidates on grades/experience OR if its more dependent on if a supervisor wants a particular student?

I am currently cold-emailing profs for supervision inquiries. I did not do undergrad at ubc and my undergrad is in cs so I am looking to go into climate modelling and more of an interdisciplinary focus, rather than pure earth sciences research.

I know ubc is super competitive, but if anybody who got into the program, it would be great if you can chance me:

- 3.80 gpa in comp sci
- agriculture research exp under FSWEP (federal gov internship program)
- currently employed at a green-tech company. This isn't a research position, its more a software dev role
- undergraduate 400-level course which involved writing a research paper under the supervision of a prof

Graduate program in environmental sciences

How is the thesis based masters in environmental sciences at utsc? If anybody who has graduated from this program or currently enrolled in it, I would appreciate your honest thoughts on if its worth pursuing.

I come from a comp sci/statistics background and I have ~2 years of research experience at the federal government. I want to do interdisciplinary research between computational sciences and environmental sciences (This is basically what my previous research experiences fall under)

For anybody who has personal experience with this program, or if you applied to it and didn't end up going, I would love to hear your honest feedback and how hard the admissions is. I graduated from another canadian university and therefore I don't have any personal connections with supervisors. If anybody has any advice on how to cold email supervisors, that would be appreciated.

I am considering other programs across Canada too so I'm trying to gather a sense of if this program would be well suited for me.

Need advice that isn't just "You're an adult, they can't stop you" regarding strict brown parents

Hello, I am 25f and I currently live at home because I don't have any job prospects allowing me to move out. I am dealing with a situation regarding my strict, brown parents and need serious advice on how to navigate it. Its a long story, and I need someone to patiently listen to me and give advice that is actually useful, not just "move out" or "you're an adult so they can't stop you".

I want to go to a concert alone in another city this august, but my parents won't allow it. My dad especially started yelling like an animal and completely lost his mind when I brought it up. As I said, I can't just "move out" and I have to come back home and live with them for another year while I save up to move for grad school (They said they won't let me move for grad school either, but thats still a long time away so I am not having that conversation with them right now). My parents are strict brown muslim parents and their reasoning is, they don't trust me to go alone. There is more to the story as to why they don't "trust" me, but basically a few months ago, I lied to them and told them I was visiting my close friend (Who they know) in another city for a weekend. They only allowed it because it was a friend who they know so they trusted me, but then they called my friend and found out that I lied to them and I actually went to visit my long distance bf. I am not friends with this person anymore as I did not expect her to turn out to be a snitch, when she said she would support me.

So regarding the concert, they won't let me go alone because they say they don't trust me. We live in a super small town and I don't have any friends who I can go with either. I reassured them that they would have my location at all times and know where I'm staying and everything. They won't even LISTEN to me and have made it clear they will make life miserable for me if I cross them and go anyway.

I need serious advice on what to do here and how to keep the peace with them and going to the concert. Please don't just comment "be an adult and move out" I promise you if I could do that, i would.

Does anyone else think scalpers aren't the problem?

Before I get destroyed in the comments, yes scalpers *are* part of the problem. I hate scalpers and I advocate that the gov put restrictions on TM to prevent scalpers reselling for profit. My point is, concert tickets even at face value have become completely unaffordable. Its not just the scalpers. We need to shift the conversation from scalpers and talk about concerts being too expense as a whole.

Even the face value tickets I'm seeing for 300-400 seats are still hundreds of dollars. $1,000 face value floor ticket (yes the pit tickets are this much, not even resale) is too much for even the most loyal and true fans to afford.

They are slowly turning every enjoyable little thing in society to be accessible only for the rich, and I wish there was more movement between communities to actually organize and protest these issues. Anyways, this will probably get deleted but thanks for coming to my tedtalk.

I'm not a uoft student but I am a Canadian student from alberta applying to uoft masters in computer sciences and can someone please help me because I've cold-emailed 5 professors so far and none of them got back to me. I have professional (research) work experience who will provide me a strong LOR and a 3.8 undergrad gpa.

In my email, i discussed their papers and how it aligns with my own research goals. I just don't understand. What else are they looking for??????????????

I was accepted into the futurepath cohort and as I was watching the intro videos, I noticed that they kept emphasizing in the videos that futurepath is geared towards encouraging students and their employers to fill a permanent position by the student upon graduation. This is why futurepath only allows upper year students to apply because they need to be close to finishing their program, in order to allow the employer the opportunity to hire them full-time upon graduation (This is like the entire goal of the futurepath program).

So i'm genuinely curious, has anyone who's done futurepath actually received a full-time offer after their student term ended? Does that actually happen?
