A few pics from today

I had a little free time today so I hiked up Blacktail Butte in Grand Teton National Park. Not a LOT of contacts over the 45 minutes I was operating on 20m, but I'm still pleased with how far 2.5W can get on the QRPGuys vertical.

This is why we make checklists!

That feeling when you hike 90 minutes and 1100 vertical feet (335 meters for those of you in the civilized world) to do a POTA activation and discover when you're setting up that the battery is in the bag you left in the car.

World Ranger Day

Today is World Ranger Day. A big "Thank You!" goes out to all the park rangers everywhere (but especially our local ones in Grand Teton National Park) who take care of these treasures and the people who visit them.

Vegan Cake Recipes

OK people. I'm NOT a baker but my wife (the vegan of us) has been craving cake. I made one yesterday which was OK but not great and I'm looking for something which is a perfect cake, the kind I could serve to even the most dedicated non-vegan out there.

Hit me with your recs, please.

Are "French bakeries" a thing now?

I'm back on LI visiting my parents for a couple of weeks and in the shopping centers by their house are not one, but two, "French artisan" bakeries. Grew up and spent the majority of my life on the island (left in 2018, live in Wyoming now), was last back here in 2022 and I've never seen one anywhere here before.

Is this a new thing?

(Also, I miss my wife, I miss my home in the mountains, but it's good to visit where people tawk properly and I can get a proper slice or a knish for a little bit. And WBAB still sounds exactly the same as it did 40 years ago.)

Man, they're early this year. There are two full buses at Teton Point turnout rn (one was here when I pulled in, and another just arrived). It seems VERY early.

(Edit: spelling)

We live in Jackson Hole, WY, so we're in FDA zone 4 and a little above 6200' elevation (for those in the civilized world, that's about 1900 meters) . We have a 4'x8' raised bed in our driveway with a greenhouse cover on it and some heating lamps because our growing season is very short. We managed to have a steady supply of kale all winter with it, although this past winter was atypically warm and we even had some nights that were above freezing!

Unfortunately, this means we have a lot of ants. I've tried a number of things to get rid of them. We've used food-grade diatomaceous earth. We've used a mix of sugar water and borax. We still have ants. Anyone have any good organic solutions for this?
