How to stop rust, but keep patina?

How to stop rust, but keep patina?

I finally found a lower rolling chest to match the upper toolbox I’ve been using for so many years, and both of them have a bit of surface rust.

The rust doesn’t bother me … well, not too much. But i don’t want it to get worse - so now I’m thinking I should stop the rust and find a way to keep the patina.

I don’t know much about finishing / painting metal, but in case it’s helpful I am more familiar with using linseed oil, wax, milk paint, and other low-VOC finishes for wood… and I’ve got a gallon of WD-40 I’d love to use if only for the Proustian reaction I get to the smell of naphtha and whatnot.

What tool is used for hand-stitching rasps?

The process of hand-stitching rasps looks incredibly satisfying, and considering the cost of rasps from Auriou, Corradi, and the like, I can't help wanting to try making a rasp of my own. ...Even if I have no idea what I'm doing, and will likely regret every moment I spend diving down this rabbit hole.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Which finish is/was this?

I only know oil and wax finishes, and even then, I’m relatively inexperienced. Is there any way to ID this teak veneer’s finish from a photo, or is there a series of tests I should run to see what’s what?

LG Refrigerator: never again.

Fool me once, shame on you.

The problem isn’t even with the condenser, but with the fan that is supposed to move cold air up from the freezer compartment. Two separate companies have tried working with LG to get the problem solved, and both have failed.

I’m done, and wondering what it would cost to build a restaurant-style walk-in refrigerator with parts that are “serviceable” and “replaceable” by “humans” - as opposed to LG, which advised us to get the extended warranty next time.

From what I can tell, this is so common an occurrence for LG that they know precisely what they can do with their extended warranty.

(breathes normally)

Lots of updates in this 1890 Victorian, and tasteful ones — but this (working!) fireplace just blows my mind. Cast iron, and .. what on earth is this tile even called?

Closing day can’t come fast enough.

Cut Flooring Nails ↗️ Birdcage Awl

I had no real need for these cut flooring nails, but $0.50 for a box was an offer I couldn’t refuse. Turns out, they’re plenty hard enough to grind into awls and other blades. This one is already helping me transfer chair layouts from the Anarchist’s Design Book and Stick Chair Book by LAP, and it cuts a decent hole for screws.

Edge retention is TBD, and my handle-turning skills are laughable — but considering the price, I’m glad to make it work. Reminds me of the old New England saying: use it up, wear it out - make it do, or do without.

Retrofit flange-mounted motor with a cradle base?

A buddy has this 3/4hp TEFC motor that I want to buy. Thing is, his motor has a flange mounted base for his more modern bandsaw - and to make it work with my 1930s-era Delta bandsaw, I need to mount the motor on its side.

I would rather ask (what feels like a dumb question) and risk learning something than remain a silent fool.

This seems more or less straightforward, requiring an aftermarket / retrofit mount with barrel or hose clamps to keep the motor secure on its side. I’ve never used flange-mount motors before, so I figure there may be another solution - possibly an L-bracket of some sort?

Flange-mount motor retrofit cradle base?

A buddy has this 3/4hp TEFC motor that I want to buy, replacing the older, weaker motor on my bandsaw. Thing is, his motor has a flange mounted base for his more modern bandsaw - and to make it work with my 1930s-era Delta bandsaw, I need to mount the motor on its side.

Powderpost Beetles?

Man, am I learning this lesson the hard way. … and/or: guess I’m glad somebody and his lousy buds got their fiber this winter?

Am I right in thinking these are powderpost beetles, and that I can prevent further infestation by (burning them alive first, and then) treating new green wood with a borax solution?

Time to replace my cherry chopping block … right?

I could keep using it, but a/ the edges keep chipping off, and b/ not even my freshly-sharpened axes can stay buried after a forceful blow.

How do you go about deciding when and how to retire these old soldiers?
