A&B Fabric - thoughts, vague setlist and video highlights
Fabric
Always nice to return to Fabric - 5 years I think since I was last there (Jon Hopkins I believe for a rare DJ set). After the deaths at the club, maybe 10 years ago now, Fabric had become notorious for airport style searches, being full of tourists and creepy men.
So it was nice to see some changes since I was last there - in the queue we had a chat from the head of welfare who said safety and the safety of women was their top priority, while the searches and security were light and friendly.
Leena Punx - fairly standard anjuna style warm up, nothing amazing
Above & Beyond - WOW. Wowowowow - and so up stepped Jono (and Tony so another Redditor says) into the booth (it had to be Jono didn’t it?). When was the last time this happened? Jono did a DJ set in London was it over ten years ago now for charity?
I had no expectations for this set - a classics would be nice. We didn’t get a classics but we got something else - just non stop bangers. I really felt he was loving it in there: no screens to type or no matching visuals. It really was all about the music.
First 20 mins no idea - there was a stunning ID around the 20 min mark, maybe new A&B? Did they play it at Silverworks? Trancey roller with a female vocal
J Ribbon - Man on fire
A&B - Feel the vibe
A&B - Always (wow where did that come from?)
Faithless - Salva mea (A&B remix)
Atlantis - Fiji (Oliver Smith remix)
A&B - Jam w/ Alone tonight vocal
AVNT - Brazil (I think)
A&B - Counting down the days
A&B - You got to go
A&B - Hello w/ Stealing time vocal
A&B - Red rocks
A&B - Is it love
Tom Staar vs Delerium - Silence (A&B’s it’s not rocket silence mix)
Mat Zo - Synapse Dynamics (Arty remix)
As much as it’s great to see A&B in theatres and big stages, hearing that music in somewhere like fabric was something else. It’s loud and punchy and thick.
If I’m being picky - Celestial, Crash, AI and Out of Time and Major Drop all would’ve sounded insane in that room. But that’s up there with Printworks, Little Something at Wembley and ABGT200.
Mat Zo - I was a little apprehensive about Mat, which Mat were we going to get: wacky or serious? Turns out we got an insane (and I’m going to say it) almost techno set that didn’t let up for 2 hours. Think peak time club Digweed or Joseph Capriati when they’re in their techno mood. Looping and building and layering - it’s the music you only hear at the club between 3 and 7AM, when the crowd are settled and they’re plateauing. It’s rolling and chugging and it carries you forward and the percussion rattles around the sound system. You can’t see the joins, it flows. And it never sounds as good at home on the headphones. All I know is he finished an hour earlier than stated and closed with I need to feel love.
Last two clips in the video are Mat.
And that was it - shout out anyone who said hello to me (and the guy who tapped me on the shoulder and said ‘it’s coming home’, gave me a wink and walked off). Shout out Adam as well (it was Adam wasn’t it?) in the Grum t shirt.
I really hope Jono/ A&B do more club sets, because that was special. And all that for £17
