[GR IIIx] - My custom darktable preset for muted tones (looking for critiques)

Hi, I’ve created a custom preset for darktable to give the photos I’ve taken with the GR IIIx a softer/muted tone.

These are the DNG files with the style applied; no other editing has been done.

Are they too heavily edited?

I’d love to hear what you think. You feedback will help me improve the style.

Thanks!

Changer d'assurance emprunteur

Zebra settings on the Lumix S5II for ETTR (photography, not video)

I’ve only just got this camera; I don’t shoot video, just photography, and I’ve discovered the Zebra stripes in the menu and the manual.

I’m wondering if you use them for taking photos and, if so, how?

My idea was to set Zebra 1 to 80% and Zebra 2 to 95% and use them to expose using the ETTR method.

As soon as I see the first stripes appear, I’m sure that means I’m exposing correctly on the right side.

Is my reasoning correct? Or should I stop down by 1/3 of a stop earlier?

The new feature nobody is talking about

In my RSS feeds and on Reddit, when I read the news about darktable 5.6.0, the main topics are:

  • AI masking
  • AI denoising

I use Tumbleweed, and darktable is compiled by default without the AI features.

I’ve had the chance to try out these features via AppImage, and although they work perfectly, masking and denoising are the last things I need because I hardly ever use them in my workflow.

But one thing that strikes me is how little discussion there is about a feature that really changes the way images stand out: the color harmoniser.

Just how useful is it to be able to manage colours like this?

Am I the only one who's in love with colours and this feature?

I really don't know how to thank you for this amazing feature, which rounds off a piece of software I absolutely adore <3

On writing texts for photography books

I'm a photographer, and I mainly express myself through images. I read a lot, and however hard I try, writing isn't my main way of expressing my creativity.

When I read photobooks, they're often accompanied by wonderful introductions to the project, and I’ve always wondered how these collaborations come about.

I'm curious to hear about your experience: have you ever written for photographic projects, and if so, how did that collaboration come about? Did you write based solely on the photos? Or did you travel with the photographer and share the experience together?

Because whilst I can see how that might work for a photo essay, for long-term photographic projects lasting years, it might be difficult.

Thank you to everyone who shares their experience.

Collaboration between a photographer and a writer on a creative project FR/EN

Hello everyone, I’m a freelance photographer based in Cannes.

I’m launching a long-term documentary storytelling project in our local area and am looking for a creative partner who can write stories – a journalist, writer or someone passionate about storytelling. In french and english.

I’m looking for a writer who can dig beneath the surface, conduct interviews, explore social or historical issues in depth, and work in synergy with the images. I’m not looking for someone who simply writes captions, but for a true co-author of the project.

I’ve already identified a few themes and am open to other ideas or initiatives, and I’m ready to discuss them over a coffee or even remotely.

I’m looking for someone who, like me, has a passion for visual culture and stories, and who loves human connections.

It doesn’t matter whether you have little or a lot of experience.

If anyone is interested, I can share further details and answer your questions 1-1!

Cannes notes visuelles

The little GR IIIx has been part of my photography kit for a few days now.

It’s really compact and unobtrusive. I decided to give it a go out and about this afternoon.

Here’s a selection of 12 photos, straight from the camera, with no editing apart from compression for the web.

I’d love to hear your feedback.

Got a new GRIIIX (382 shutter counts), some questions

I’ve just received this wonderful little gem and I’ve already fallen in love with it. It’s brand new, with just under 400 shots on the shutter count. It arrived with all the accessories except the charger. Instead, there’s a Cellonic charger with two Cellonic batteries, as well as the original battery.

I’ve checked the specifications in the manual and will use a suitable one.

I was just wondering if it’s normal for it not to be included in the box, or if the person who sold it to me simply didn’t put it in. I’ve only just noticed that it wasn’t shown in the product photos.

On the box, I can see a symbol showing a USB power adapter with a line through it.

Another interesting point: it came with a 128GB SanDisk Extreme Pro SD card with a read/write speed of 200MB/s.

I have a Lumix S5II with two cards:

  • 64GB 200MB/s
  • 64GB 95MB/s (backup).

Given that I’ll only be using the Ricoh on the street for snapshots, I’ve decided to use the 95MB/s one.

From initial tests, there aren’t any noticeable differences, whereas on the Lumix I can really tell the difference in speed, as I use the two cards as my main and backup.

I was just wondering what your experience has been in this regard.

I've updated the firmware and reset the settings to start from scratch.

I can't wait to really get to grips with it.

Help needed: Seeking calibration shots for Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 N

Hi everyone!

I’m currently processing a large backlog of photos taken with the Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 N, but since I no longer own the lens, I can't generate the calibration data myself.

I use darktable, and unfortunately, this specific lens doesn't have a distortion profile in the Lensfun database yet. Would anyone here who owns this lens be willing to take and upload a few calibration shots?

It’s a quick process, and the instructions are very straightforward on the Lensfun upload page. You'd be doing a huge favor not just to me, but to the whole open-source community!

Thanks in advance!

The darktable nightly build is available via appman

Hello everyone, thanks to am-ivan, the darktable nightly AppImage is now available via appman.

If you’re also not keen on Flatpak and want to try the nightly build without too much hassle, and with your own system and GPU, this is the best way to do it without any headaches.

I’ve noticed that there are adapters available for Pentax 67 medium-format lenses to fit the L-mount. Apart from wondering whether this is actually feasible, I can’t find any photos taken with these lenses and the S5II. I was wondering if anyone uses this type of adapter and would be willing to share some photos.
