I just got duped out of $2,000
I'm completely beside myself. I was subleasing from a friend of a friend and we had to break the lease early because the sublease was unsafe. I wanted to keep everything on good terms because we had a similar situation in life to this person we were subleasing from. We were both recently married, moving in with our partners for the first time. She just signed a year lease with him so she was keen to get her old apartment sublet to somebody. We bonded over that and I felt happy that I finally had a sound landlord.
Flash forward to two months later, we have to leave the apartment. I tell her that I'm planning on breaking the lease early. I ask her if there's any chance we could keep some of the deposit.
I know what you guys are gonna say - of course she can keep the deposit. We signed a contract.
But we were also friends. Nothing was broken in the apartment, we left on good terms.
And she never told me she marrying a millionaire. I just saw her apartment. The place is worth millions easily. She doesn't need to keep that money. Of course, it's her right to. But it's not what's morally right.
Me and my partner are living paycheck to paycheck. The apartment we were subleasing in was in a low income neighborhood. She knows what it was like to live there and how no one would volunteer to if they could afford to live elsewhere. I didn't realize she had been living so well off. I thought she was just marrying a normal dude. I thought she needed the money from the deposit.
I'm so heartbroken. I feel like such an idiot. I should have never moved in there in the first place. Now I'm down $2,000 and it's going to take us months to save that money to get a new place again. To her it was nothing. I'm so sad and angry. I feel so misled.
