Agency Won’t Send me Assets from My Own Work

I (unpaid intern at the time, now looking for work) had an idea that ended up being the highest engagement post of the year for the client. I tried to get the assets months after it went live, and heard and got nothing in return. This is also from an agency who gave me no farewell note and never actually formally terminated my internship. They just ghosted after my internship contract ended.

Am I morally entitled to the assets for the idea I worked on? I’d like it to go in my portfolio. I understand I may not have a legal case here but morally to not have access to my own work/ability to put it in my book seems absurd. Especially when the fuckers paid me not a red cent.

It Finally Clicked

I’ve been riding paipos or lunch trays for many years, and had wanted to get into bodysurfing so I had a custom handplane made for me inspired by the way I wanted to ride about two years ago. In addition to it being an easy way to be prepared for surf while traveling, I knew it would be the only way I’d actually commit enough to figure out bodysurfing once and for all.

I went about two years only taking it out in shit surf a few times a year, not really finding the energy pocket, just thinking that’s how it was going to be.

It wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I saw a shorebreak pounder that I could only fathom taking the handplane out in, and so I did. I sent it into oblivion, fully getting destroyed putting my body on the line repeatedly. But I’ll be damned if I didn’t have a blast. I felt like a kid again. It was a feeling akin to hitting your first absolutely pure golf swing (for those who know), but on a repeatable scale. Once I locked into the power zone once, I just kept doing it, eventually finding shorebreak barrel after barrel.

I’ve found many barrels in my day on trays, paipos and other craft. But I’ve never sat deeper and actually made it out than with the handplane that day. They all ended with me getting wrecked due to my commitment to making it out, but it made it that much more childlike an experience.

Safe to say I’ve caught the bug, that “I understand it now”. Of course I’ll be continuing with trays and mainly paipos but now I have the confidence and knowledge to take the handplane out all the same and look forward to having it in the regular rotation. I just might be that guy that drives around with fins and a plane in the truck all the time.

Philly Creative Shops

What are some Philly agencies a junior with a concluding internship should target and find connections at in Philly? RTOP seems like an obvious one, and is my first priority, but they canned a bunch of people earlier this year which doesn’t bode well for creative onboarding right now.

Remembering why I hate the local scene.

I have been playing in the studio part time and doing legs of road stuff for some years now. It hasn’t really been since high school that I was involved in the local circuit. But recently I started supporting a local reggae artist since he seemed like a really solid dude, a great marketer, very good vocalist and fellow jersey guy (we aren’t located in Jersey anymore).

He plays decent regional stuff not just around town, but they’re all mostly day trippable gigs within the state. At first it was cool because he’s a genuinely good guy as are a few of the other dub/hip hop heads in the band. But I keep finding myself in the powwow circle after the shows just trying to show face with the other local scene people so I keep a good rep with the artist, and all it is is fucking drama. And without sounding like too much of a dick, it’s no wonder why these people don’t make it out of the local. They’re wildly unprofessional.

Whether they’re in technical or creative roles, everything outside of the music is schoolgirl gossip. Why can’t these people just show up, have fun doing their job and go home? No one else’s business is your own, and if someone bothers you enough to where you need to make a statement about it to others, don’t work with them. But keep your mouth shut. No one pays you or has you around to be cliquey or to shit on others when you have your own issues.

The artist I’m working with doesn’t really participate. He actually steers conversation away from the politics and drama. But he’s a bit of a people pleaser in that if it keeps going that direction he can’t help but to bite. I’m getting to a point personally at which I’m starting to just do my part and go home. Missing a few connections before or afterwards has been so worth having not dealt with the local scene bullshit.

One could argue that the same exists on the larger circuit, but in my experience, people only get by on the bigger circuit by being professional. Sure they have opinions, but they stay within the circles who actually have a need to know.

2nd gen pre-facelift requiring entire tailgate disassembly to replace tag lights

Anyone else run into this? Needing to remove the interior tailgate panel as well as exterior plate frame/housing just to replace the tag lights since the bulbs cannot be replaced alone. The entire assembly must be done at once.

How much would a shop/dealer ask for such a job? So many parts require disassembly and I don’t want to do a shoddy job of reassembling it myself if I do the job.

Are VNSH a gimmick?

VNSH just seems like a glorified level 2 retention belly band system. Doesn’t appear to be any elements that even try to prevent printing in any way. Also they look insanely warm.

Has anyone actually had legit experiences them that you can attest or detest to their quality or worth?

Paipo Travel Solutions?

Looking to make a trip with my Wegener tombstone in a few weeks. Im not a sponger but I ride only alternative prone surf craft. Am I better off just bringing a lunch tray or handplane or is there a safe & efficient way to pack it? It’s a bit too tall for a traditional bodyboard bag, and even if I found one that fits it, I can’t seem to trust baggage handlers enough. Is shipping it the best way?

Rear Shocks “Must” Warrant Full Alignment…?

[2013 460 Base]

Shop just told me that an alignment “must” be done for rear shocks only. No front end work, no strut work.

The truck was aligned earlier this year along with doing the whole front end suspension system (control arms, shocks, struts, etc.) and I don’t understand how standard OEM rear shocks alone absolutely require it. I understand if it’s shop policy to align with every suspension job but I’m tight with the franchise owner who I communicate with directly for all my work, and have worked around such things before for certain jobs.

Is this a straight up up charge/liability charge or is there actual reason behind doing it, particularly on these vehicles with OEM parts?

Any Prime Jet Supporters?

This is a hot take, but at this point in time, Binyamin seems to be the most likeable figure in the Boboverse, along with Mikey… but for the sake of BDS, it’s the Jet. And it’s because he and Mikey are the most authentic. Binyamin has not changed a lick since the dawn of his presence on camera, and you can tell you’re always getting the real Jet, which at their status is hugely commendable.

You can also tell he’s a genuinely funny person that it’s not overly performative.

I Have Found Myself in a White Boy Reggae Band… What Now

It feels like I’m part of a scene that’s wearing a costume and won’t acknowledge what it’s dressed up as…

—

I’m a professional studio/touring musician and this started off as doing a favor for an up and coming artist who’s a nice guy from my home state by sitting in with him at a few small shows. I continued to get the call back and continued to say yes because my washed up ass has always been available when he calls.

It’s gotten to a point at which he is considering me to be part of his band. While his music is cringe as hell, he’s a cool person and the band isn’t bad, and we bring a strong dub element to his live show that makes it fun.

He in particular hasn’t done anything too far in terms of cultural appropriation yet but his scene is just not it. The venues he plays rarely if ever host or support any black artists or artists from Jamaica or the UK. His crowd is the typical sublime/reggae rock/cali reggae crowd; mid-30s to early 50s Florida white people that own and small boats and drink too much, and the other bands that are on bills with him aren’t Rasta and never pay homage to Rastafari yet feature the Rasta colors in their logos, shows, or other branding then go on to live blatantly non-Rastafarian lives. I have no problem with flying the colors without practicing if you at least show recognition for the culture and its inspiration.

I’m not Rasta, nor am I black, but I grew up largely on black music and have been in the world with enough amazing people from different cultures that I can’t not appreciate their contribution to the world of music and world influence. And that’s just not happening here. Rasta is being used for brand image, not legitimate inspiration.

It gets a bit uncomfy at times but idk if it’s just my head or if there’s something actually wrong here culturally. I haven’t run into a black artist or fan in this scene yet and I feel like that might be telling. It’s also a pretty racially mixed part of the state/country.

What should I do now? I have been trying to vouch for black artists when I can at these events but I only have so much influence coming from the roots and hip hop world to what feels like a white mans game, even though I’m white. Part of me feels like I’m contributing to a seen that seems passively suppressive to its roots.

Are juniors screwed

Given the state of things, are current juniors and interns just screwed with regard to their future or are they in a place of unique advantage coming up in and learning a changing industry as it transforms?

Likelihood of Creative Employment After an *unpaid* Internship

I’m wrapping up my time in portfolio school, and am currently working at a large global indie as a slave. My AD (another intern) is absolutely terrible but that said I do really dig my ACD, and everyone else I’ve come in contact with thus far. The work has also been extremely cool to be apart of, as we are working on a major consumer client. I have three ideas that have made it through the rounds into the final strategy pitch tomorrow.

I have some wind at my back; awards, a mentor connection to one of the global ECDs at the agency, some school connections, and now some ideas that are prominent for my current client after just one week with the agency. Also, other creatives there have said that they need a copywriter, and are actively hiring for a senior copy position. So there could be hope.

Still, I can’t help but acknowledge that it’s unpaid, and that unpaid internships are only half as likely to lead to employment than paid. So far I like the agency and I want to stay, so I plan on abusing every connection I have to get my foot in the door come completion, but is it already a lost cause given its being unpaid.

Would it be out of line to have a convo with my ACD and/or CD about if they’d realistically be open to bringing me on full time in a few weeks, a full month before completion?

Stagehand/Production Gigs During Home Time?

Thinking about taking a stagehand gig locally at a mid sized venue working under the legendary audio engineer there. I’m mostly a studio cat these days and just started a creative internship in advertising so I’m off the road for right now other than short regional runs. The technical side of things tends to stress me tf out and I’m just not sure it’s the right fit. I have been a drum tech in the past but it was mostly working with a crew who handled the dense technical stuff and ran cable. That said, how many of you guys do this?

BOH Work w/o Cable Running Experience

Am I out of my mind to be considering/seeking out BOH gigs at small but high value local venues without legit experience running cable aside from occasional wrapping or taping and very little rigging experience other than extra-hands pre production stuff? Im a drummer with dedicated experience as a drum tech but I never was in charge of micing, and outside of the specific drum role and some minimal tech work in high school I’ve never handled more general duties that weren’t common sense tasks. Obviously I don’t plan on lying about my experience to get gigs, and as such I just want to make sure there’s still work for me and I don’t seem like a useless dunce.

Of course “everybody starts somewhere”, but I’m somewhat established in the local creative and music scenes and want to uphold my reputation and not seem like an idiot. I’m having a chat with a local engineer tmrw (who knows the guys at the joint I’m going to be at) to go over what I am and am not qualified for, and I don’t want to come out of it being told “I think they’re actually looking for a bar-back.” Will there be worthwhile work despite my lack of experience in some more general areas?

Bruniton Finish 92fs Touchups

While I do love the patina on my 92, for me it’s a tool prepared for and/or used daily as a home defense, concealed and open backcountry carry gun for me. It has had its share of bumps and bruises. Does anybody have any recs for paint touchups/repairs that hold up? Is a sharpie an overly ghetto solution? Haven’t tried it for fear of messing up the job and it looking ridiculous.

Can’t include pics rn but there aren’t any major bare spots, only minor wear marks on holstering points, the rear of hammer, and the base of the grip. Sharpie would do the trick in terms of coverage, but I want to do the job right.

Pick One EDC

Assume you’re carrying year round, all four seasons and have only one single choice. About 95% concealed carry, 5% backcountry/rural open carry. Both guns are in stock form and cannot be modded for the sake of this poll other than both carrying 15 rounds (Glock mod).

SAMY Creative Experience?

How is life at SAMY in creative? I ask as a US based CW with an offer. I have activation and traditional background, and less social, but would love to beef up my social background more (one of my main reasons for considering.)

Are creatives put on accounts they align with or just thrown wherever there’s space?

First Impressions of a Straight Guy Bringing/Using Lube?

What would be a woman’s thoughts if a guy pulled out lube on a hookup?

I can have issues with penetration due to my size (24M) and think that lube might help my case a bit especially when there’s not ample preparation/arousal time. What would be the general impression if I pulled out lube on the first or second time casually sleeping with someone?

Of course I’d ask their permission to use it and so forth but I don’t want to look like I’m a weirdo breaking out a toolkit to have casual sex.
