Breakfast near Shawlands, lunch near Botanic Garden next week

I'll be wandering all over the city looking at flats next week. I'm staying in Shawlands, so I have my eye on The Roll Shop or Watsons Bakery for breakfast.

On Monday I have two viewings near the Botanic Garden, so for lunch, if it's not raining, I'd like a handheld/takeout option to eat as I wander through the garden or sit somewhere.

If it's raining, somewhere inside.

I've watched the youtubes, but most of them focus on breakfast and dinner in the West End.

Bank preference in Glasgow?

I’m moving to Glasgow next week, trying to figure out which bank to go with. I need something set up on day 1 to give work.

HSBC UK app failed me from the US, and there seems to be limited options to sort it out from here. There appears to be one branch in Glasgow, Falkirk, Stirling, Edinburgh, so I should be able to do it in town.

Do I care about a physical branch? I like having a person to talk to if needed, but maybe not necessary.

Starling and Monzo are the highest rated digital banks, Revolut advertises multicurrency (not sure how much that matters with Wise available?).

We’ve had Chase rewards credit cards forever, not sure if it makes any sense to get a Chase UK bank account. I see they have an office in Glasgow, not quickly finding if they have a retail branch.

Glasgow secondary school placement vs flat rental

Trying to find a flat in Glasgow, a big part of the search is distance to school.

The first school I reached out to seemed to indicate I have to give them a permanent home address before they can even tell me if they can place my kids.

Is it reasonable to ask "If I rent this flat, which is a 4 minute walk from here, can I expect to get places for my kids here?"

Assuming I can even find multiple flats to choose from in different catchments, one that's going to push me to a school 30 minutes away would have a significant impact on the decision.

I realize this may need to be in person, maybe I quit emailing and just walk up once I'm in town.

US Tmobile to Google Voice including Whatsapp, iphone 13

Moving from Texas to Scotland in a couple weeks, trying to make sure I don’t miss anything with this transfer.

I have a tmo account with a physical sim.

End goal (correct me) is to get the US number ported to google voice for future 2fa calls (not texts in most cases?).

I think this will also allow me to keep it connected to whatsapp, and with whatsapp rolling out usernames, new UK and other international contacts that message my username won’t see any difference between the US number and a UK number in whatsapp. I realize some of this is still TBD.

What I’m still working on is, how do I have data to run the google voice through before I get to the UK and set up an esim with data?

If I port to GV now, I have no US data plan. If I manage to get a UK plan from the US, I’ll be roaming. I think I need to do this a week before I leave, in case it takes that long to go through.

Entered wrong return date for most recent trip. Biometrics Friday, paid for priority. Cancel and refund everything? Letter with VFS uploads? Call UKVI?

Entering my kids info for a family visa, from the US.

She was out of the country at the time. I entered that trip, tried to enter the return date in the future. I remember it gave an error, but I didn't realize I'd changed it to the current date.

The application has been submitted and paid.

Is this worth canceling and resubmitting? If I go that route, do I/can I also cancel the VFS appointment, assuming it's linked to the specific application? I'm not seeing a refund for the priority service on the VFS site.

Or is this just something to include a note in our document upload?

I'll probably end up calling the paid number.

Edit: I see several older posts saying not a big deal, since the trip was mentioned and not to a red flag location. I'll probably just include the note in our uploads.

How much is private medical insurance worth to the average employee? How much does it cost the employer?

I realize the first part is almost as vague as "how long is a piece of string", potentially vastly different plan to plan, employee to employee.

I've only ever worked in the US for US companies, about to move to Scotland.

I have an offer that includes Single private medical, which I assume means employee only.

In the US, health insurance is life and death. People lose money on daycare, give up quality of life, etc, in return for health insurance.

How much salary is family vs single worth? My family will need some specialists, so we'll definitely be going to some private providers. I know care in general is less costly that in the US.

How much more does it cost the employer? I'm seeing Single in the £60-150 range, family in the £100-250/month range.

Assuming I'm not already at the top of the salary range, is this a reasonable thing to ask for, and worth asking? Or is it a huge cost to the employer and I don't really need it anyway?

Cheap cars? What's the catch (Coming from the US)?

In the US, there are very few cars available for under $5k, let alone $2k. Most of them have salvage titles, similar to your Category S (we let basically anything back on the road, no MOT levels of scrutiny).

I see plenty of Civics and other reasonably well reviewed, generally reliable cars, under £2500.

I'll be in Scotland, mostly looking at cars in the North of England. I know rust will be a concern.

I'm capable of most general repairs, but I won't have my garage and full tool set and welder like I used to have in the US. Private seller would be preferable, even if it means a flight or a train to get there.

Assuming they have a few months MOT remaining, and that they can reasonably be expected to pass again, what's the catch? In the US, it would be worth buying just to drive for 6 months and scrap.

Is it more difficult/expensive to scrap a car that's failed? I can generally expect to get $500+ for any car in any condition.

Child dependent visa application, IHS surcharge £0?

We've submitted my wife's application, now working on the kids, and both are coming up 0 for the IHS surcharge.

Is this correct for the moment, and it will be assessed later?

Wife paid hers before she got to the application fee.

The confirmation shows BETA, so I'm assuming something isn't working correctly.

Someone suggested the bill comes by email, but this appears to be a completed transaction.

I have not received an email confirmation for the kid.

I have received the VFS email for the kid, which we haven't for my wife.

Is this worth calling or emailing support about?

UK Family visa kids application, asks for parent, then sponsor, then parent

I'm working on visa applications for my kids. First parent is the one also applying. Mom's info. Fine.

Then it asks about the accompanying parent's sponsor. Dad (me). Also fine.

Then it asks for other parent, specifies

>Provide details about your other parent. Do not provide details about a parent who you have already given details about

Uhhh... me again, but it seems contradictory.

I'm going with it, because in the first case I'm Mom's sponsor, in the second I'm Father.

Am I overthinking this, and it's as intended? Or do I need to somehow back out one of the entries? There's no "Already entered Other Parent as sponsor" button that I can see.

I have a question that may appear to be against rule 2, but isn’t. Also travel between application and decision.

Under Family visas, gov.uk says priority service £500, 30 days.

A bit farther down the page, it says using the UK Immigration app, next working day.

Does this mean you can get next day decision without paying for priority service?

Also, applying from outside the UK, it appears you can travel to a third country while waiting for the decision. There is a restriction is on traveling to the UK while waiting for the decision. Is that correct?

I need some crazy to brighten my day

Guys.

U/Ok-Intention7506 blocked me.

This may be the first time I’ve cared.

I was enjoying watching whatever that was unfold.

Now I have to go back and forth to anonymous to stay informed.

What do, internet?

Also, iphone 13 pro is still a perfectly functional device. I have 74% battery health, so I know it will either spicy pillow or slip quietly into the next life this year, but it’s served me well. I’m not saying goodbye yet.

2014, engine died of misfire 1 and 4, replaced connectors and coils, now won’t start.

We had timing chain and water pump done earlier this year. Last week, the car sputtered and shook and wife made it to a parking lot.

When we did the timing chain, the shop mentioned the coil pack connectors were going, and zip tied them tight. Ran fine for ~6k miles.

Since 1 and 4 were the ziptied ones, I figured that was the issue. Replaced all 4, and… no start. It cranks and cranks but never catches.

Replaced coils with autozone, thinking maybe the bad connectors had sparked out the coils. Pulled plugs and cleaned them (a little wet). No change.

At one point, some combination of new and old coils, it ran enough to get around the block. I was hoping it just needed blowing out, but no.

So, what now? I’m not sure I can just pull a plug and test for spark like old single coil cars.

Also, unclear if related, the thing that bolts to the coil cable conduit is all blown out. It seems vacuum related. No impact on starting if I finger it. Not sure what it’s called.

I assume something dumb, but I’m tired and frustrated.

Expat moving jobs in a short time, England/Wales/Scotland,

Edit: I’m a dual citizen, US/UK. Right to work, sponsorship, relocation are not required.

Thanks for the help so far.

I'm sure I have some of the wording wrong, trying to understand how easy it is to move professional jobs in a short time.

I have an opportunity to transfer US to UK with my company. One way they may get me over would be for me to quit the US company and hire on with the UK company (I’m a dual citizen). I'm generally fine with the terms of this offer, but I'm not aware of labor laws that might impact my giving notice and leaving after only a few weeks. Desk would be in Wales, home office in England, if that matters.

There's also a possibility of a similar job in Scotland.

Neither of these are firm offers yet. I'm not sure yet which I'd prefer. Neither are offering relocation or otherwise making an investment that would tie me to them for a period.

So, if I start a job in Wales, then the next week, Scotland calls with an offer, am I stuck with a 3 month notice period or something else that would make the move difficult?

Coming from the US, Texas, non-union, I can walk away from a job today, and be working or the competition tomorrow. Our two week notice is courtesy only in almost all cases.

Family visas partner and kids, group and location questions

Hello

I'm a dual citizen, waiting to hear back on a possible transfer, possible new job, to get things rolling for family visas.

One of our options at the moment would be for me (dual citizen) to take the kids (US citizens) sooner, leaving my wife (US citizen) to come along later. There are a few lines on the website that suggest mom has to be coming at the same time, even though I'd be the one with UK citizenship and a job.

https://www.gov.uk/uk-family-visa/child

>If you’re under 18

>One of your parents must be applying or have applied for a visa or to extend their permission to stay as a:

>partner - and the partner they’re joining is your other parent

>parent - and they have sole parental responsibility for you

>You can also apply if your parent has protection status (permission to stay as a refugee or person with humanitarian protection).

>Otherwise, you might still be eligible to apply if there are serious reasons to let you come to or stay in the UK and there are plans for your care.

Does this mean mom and kids have to be on the same application, even if dad is a working citizen? Can I not just bring kids over?

I also see a few references to including kids on a parents application. I assume this just ties them all together, so they all get processed together. Or does it mean they only pay one application fee, or otherwise save some money?

Second question, location. We have family near London with plenty of space. We could stay there. If we put the application in before I have a job lined up, I would be using their address.

If I get a job before the application comes back, is it a pain to transfer the address we're actually going to? Does it make a difference if that's in Scotland or Wales?

Thanks for any insight.

Advice/experience/recommendation on a career coach or active, proven recruiters in industrial construction management or project controls

I’m an American/UK dual citizen, currently in the US, worked in Spain, France, Morocco, Texas, Louisiana.

I have a few questionable leads, but I’m looking for a more active recruiter/placement company/talent management company. Willing to pay for the service, but I’m not sure who’s legit and who’s just taking my money and offering live laugh love quotes.

I’ve primarily worked EPC scheduling, turnaround and capital projects, and projects construction management. Current job construction manager is similar role to a project manager at a lot of places.

I’ve talked to MGroup and Murphy, and I have calls with Hays and Ineos next week, but I’d really like to have someone there who knows the industry and the wording better than I do - a Bid Schedule in the US is a Tender Programme in the UK. A recruiter dropped me for no planning experience when I have 19 years across 6 clients scheduling.

So, is there a service worth paying for, or do I just keep leaning on friends and family and stalking recruiters across linkedin and facebook and hassle them on whatever platform I can get through?

Filling out job applications - how to avoid getting ignored?

Not a “please find me a job” post, please let me know if this isn’t allowed.

I have a job transfer mostly lined up, but it keeps getting delayed. Just in case it falls through, I’ve been casually applying, but ramping it up now.

Most applications ask for an address. That’s fine, I’ve got family I can use their address. Many ask if I’m willing to relocate, so applying to Scotland from a London address shouldn’t be an immediate delete.

A lot also ask for a phone number. This is a bit trickier, I don’t think I want my elderly aunts taking calls, if I get that far. Is it worth setting up a UK number? Or is it not such a red flag putting a US number in? CV calls out whatsapp/facetime over this number, but quite possible they aren’t getting that far.

I’m also fully aware I’m looking at a major pay cut. When I have no insider advice on a role, so far I’ve been putting half my US salary. When it also asks for current, maybe better to put something closer to what I’m expecting?

Stalking recruiters is certainly helpful, but some places they hide pretty well.

Any other advice?

Upholstery shop for headliner in Houston TX?

Any recommendations on an upholstery shop for a headliner? 2014 Audi A4, prefer southeast/Clear Lake/La Porte/Deer Park/Pasadena area.

I can pull it and clean it, assuming that saves money and time, just want someone to foam and fabric. I’ve messed them up before.

Save your world!

I mostly play offline, backing up mornings and evenings and any time I’m going to do something dumb.

This weekend I passed my world around a few different devices, as usual, put it up on my realm, played with some friends.

Getting ready for the week, I went to grab the latest version, and it’s half the size. 60mb. My world is 140mb. I was trimming some edges last week. I know what it should be. Checked Unmined, yup, the main areas I’ve been playing the last 5 years, a big blank stripe wiped out down the middle.

So I’ll be going back to Friday evening. I’m losing maybe an hour on my megabuild dig, and some exploring with friends. No biggie.

Back up your world. Cloud, hard drive, phone, server, flash drive in your safe deposit box, CDR and mail it to your self.

Put your archive somewhere you can’t accidentally delete it.

Zip your worlds so they aren’t showing up on your playable worlds.

Whatever you do, do it more often.
