What would you do?

I have had many colonoscopies because I have Crohn's. I've also had several doctors because of moves, doctor retiring, etc. I always have had really good doctors, like Mayo Clinic, Vanderbilt, etc. In my many colonoscopies, it's always been split dose, except many years ago, but even then it was a late evening start. I've done the same miralax prep from each doctor and always been clear. I've recently moved and my gp recommended a new G.I. doctor. I met him and he seemed fine. My husband had his once a decade colonoscopy with this guy and it was a great experience except for the prep. This doctor chooses a weird administration of the miralax/ducolax prep. He has you take 8 ducolax instead of 4, but you take 4 at 8:00 am and 4 at 5:00pm. He even has you finish the miralax by 10am the day before! I told my husband this would give too much time for more waste to form and sure enough, he was not completely clear for his colonoscopy. Well, now it's my turn and I plan on just doing the prep with the same medications that has always worked for me. I was talking to a friend and she said I should get doctor approval, but I don't see why I would. The medications are the same. That just gives him the chance to blame me if anything does go bad and I know that his crazy way won't work. I don't even know why he would do it that way when the American College of Gastroenterology guidelines are for split dose. But even if he doesn't like that for some reason, why on earth would he have you finish all of your drink by 10:00 am? Anyway, what would you do?

Need help with making a casing.

I somehow lost the casing part of the pattern for simplicity 1165 shorts. It is a double elastic casing. I think I could make one if I had an idea of measurements, but I am very poor at sewing and this will be my first garment. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it. Here is what the pattern looks like. I'm doing version D.

Wavy flashing

Just had the roof put on today we have very brittle 35-year-old Siding that we cannot afford to replace. I know it’s brittle because my husband tried to do a minor repair before and he noticed it and then we had a Siding company come out and they can’t match it anymore because the color is faded so much and it’s not made. So I noticed that the flashing is a bit wavy and the Roof roofer said that he would try something. I don’t know exactly what to straighten it some but he said the problem is to get it really straight. They would have to take off that bottom row of Siding and it is very brittle. Does this sound reasonable or is it just pour work? I really like this roofer and think they did a good job from what I can tell, but I don’t know anything about roofs.

Medical debt advice

So I have a situation with two piece pieces of medical debt that I’m not sure how serious it can be if I don’t pay. I always have to pay a lot of money out-of-pocket every year for medical issues because I have Crohn’s disease and other issues. But about 2 1/2 years ago, I had two separate situations where I just don’t feel I should have to pay. The first one was at LabCorp. I had switched my insurance and I knew that quest lab was 100% covered for sure and LabCorp was also listed as covered on my insurance, but I had not used them yet with a new insurance so I wasn’t sure. LabCorp and quest are very close together, but LabCorp had an opening for blood work quicker. So I went to LabCorp and I said here is my new insurance. I am concerned to make sure it is covered 100% before I get any blood work done. The lady that helped me honestly had a really bad attitude and just was like I was bothering her by trying to make sure and she did a very quick like yeah it’s covered when she saw the name of my insurance and I said well, can you check a little more thoroughly because I’m really concerned about it because I know if I go to quest down the street it is covered and I don’t wanna unexpected Bill. I don’t think she really checked. So I get my blood work and I get a bill for 270 some dollars and I call them back and they say yeah it turns out it wasn’t covered all the way and I explained what happened and it was pretty much well too bad. So I didn’t pay it. The other situation is a lot more money. I had to go get a colonoscopy and it was covered through my insurance. When I went to do the procedure of the day of they make you sign a paper. Now mind you I already have Crohn’s disease and going through the process of colonoscopy prep is horrible for me like anyone else, but even worse because it flares my condition. I saw on the form it said that they’re like was $2200 not paid by insurance and I said no it’s covered by insurance and she goes well. That’s the amount but you know this is just a preliminary. I’m sure you can work it out and I honestly was in a situation where it’s like what am I gonna do? I’m already prepped so I did the procedure and afterwards I called my insurance. My insurance said it was covered 100%. But I received a bill for the $2200 so I called the Gastro and they said yeah that was what the insurance didn’t pay. So I called the insurance back and they said yes it’s because the billing number was wrong. Just have your doctors office change a couple digits on the billing number and you will be covered 100%. The doctors office refused to do it. I called the insurance again and the lady was like so nice. She was like I can’t even believe this. It literally will take them five seconds and it will save you $2200 if your own insurance company saying just go ahead and do it what is their problem but they would not do it. Now they sent it to collections. I didn’t feel it was right for someone on a fixed income to have to pay $2200 that was 100% covered by my very expensive insurance. How bad is this likely to get? Well it destroy my credit? Can I get sued in court?

With or without porch rails.

This house has always had porch rails. My husband took them off because there was some wood rot and he was going to replace them, but we both realized we like the view from the porch so much better when we’re sitting down it’s more enjoyable not to be looking at rails. We are only 20 inches above the ground so we do not need rails for code. We are going to sell our house in the next year so I don’t want to do anything that could hurt resale value. Do you think we should replace the porch railing or leave it as is?

I tried to add it to add a better front on picture of it without the railing, but I can’t figure out how to do it.

Edited to add: there is a small section on the left that we are adding landscaping to build up slightly because it is a couple inches out of code. The rest of it is all well within code. Code in our town is 30 and it is almost at 20 on three side sides and 33 on the left where we are just building it up with some dirt and plantings. Thank you so much for all of your wonderful responses so far.

What’s a small treat that helps you stay on track?

I’ve found that if I have an after dinner 25 calorie Andes candy crème de mint, it’s just enough to satisfy my sweet craving. I also have an occasional 25 calorie Bit of Honey candy when everyone around me is having a desert and I want something.

What is a popular saying that has a completely different meaning today than it did when you used it growing up?

I grew up in rural Kentucky in the 1960s. When consoling someone it was very common to say, "bless your heart". Even when I heard adults talking about someone's misfortune, they would say,"bless their heart" with real care and concern. Now I'm always hearing jokes about how bless your heart is a condescending insult. It's frustrating to hear because I remember my granny rocking me and saying, "bless your heart, my sweet girl" when I had a bad day. I always thought it was such a nice saying and now it's ruined.

Searching for a particular pickle recipe.

Hi. When I was young in the mountains of Ky, there was a little country store that I frequented that had a big barrel of fermented dill pickles. I loved them. They were a nickel each, but I remember the owner letting me grab one from the barrel for free on most visits. I loved those pickles. We moved away and I didn't eat pickles for many years. I actually dislike pickles now, especially since I've never found any that taste the same. I have Crohn's disease and I am really trying to eat fermented foods even though I hate almost all of them. That's why I remembered the pickles. The only fermented pickles I found in the store are Bubbies and they are nowhere near as mild in taste. Does anyone know the the pickles I'm talking about and how to make them at home?
