Anyone have experience starting out reselling & using public transit?

Hi y’all! I am trying to break into the world of reselling. Partly for my great love for thrift + vintage finds and fashion overall and also partly because I need to save up for a car. This current economy and living in a car-centric country (cough cough USA) has been rather rough, and although I’ve made public transit work for close to two decades… it’s time I get a car. Anyway to the point: when thinking about thrifting for an online shop rather than for myself I wonder how logistically I could make it work with having to travel via public transit. I have plenty of room for storage at home, so that’s something I have covered but collecting pieces from different places in a day and bringing them home is a hang up in my mind currently. So, any good advice from folks who have done this or are currently doing this would be super helpful! Thanks in advance :)

Saved a velvet victorian chair - how can I clean these spots?

I tried cleaning the chair with water & dish soap. That only seemed to help get rid of dirt stains. I may have went a little bit much with scrubbing the spots towards the back and wondering if there is a way to help the velvet smooth out? Some sort of tool maybe? The other stains seem to be rust stains and I have no idea how to take them out. I don’t want to have to take this into a place to restore it… as I don’t have a lot of money to invest right now. I still need to help with the wood nicks but that’s a whole other feat to tackle (and a whole other post here). Just want to start with cleaning the velvet!

Cities in the US with Goth + Alt Fashion

I eventually want to move to a city where I can pursue more of a fashion-related career but don’t think NYC is for me (it’s also not affordable). What other cities would you suggest would be a place to move to that would not only be accepting of more dark, goth and alternative fashion but also would have job prospects for this specific type of fashion? Although I love where I currently live and it embraces “weirdness” and individual style, it sadly doesn’t have any fashion prospects or career growth :(

A little background: I have a BFA in textiles and I don’t want to go back to school for a specific fashion degree (because haha I don’t want MORE student debt) but am willing to work at the bottom and even intern it it means I have a better chance of working in the industry. Part of me doesn’t want to accept that I might have to just work after my emotionally and physically exhausting full time job and hustle doing the DIY small business thing…

Any advice is appreciated! Every time I post here everyone has been very nice, honest, accepting and helpful. So thank you in advance :)

Best Cities to work for an Alternative Fashion Company?

I will take any specific companies and their headquarters or cities that exude more alternative fashion and could have smaller boutique businesses in them. Anything related to goth and punk or even anything whimsical and fantasy-like fashion brands. Thanks in advance :)

Art/Creative Jobs in Portland?

I know the job market sucks right now, but I am trying to change careers. Posting here is kinda my last shot really (so please be kind). Currently working in childcare, but before that, I worked in the arts. I wouldn't mind working at the bottom as long as it can pay rent. I accepted a long time ago that "starving artist" wasn't just a saying but a true lifestyle. Jobs I have considered: studio/gallery/museum assistant, fashion/costume design, theatre stagehand crew, fabric/textile worker, seamstress/sewist, production artist, and honestly anything that is related to visual or fine art. I can't seem to find much of anything for any of these categories, and when I do, it's usually senior positions that need years of experience. The pandemic set me back (as with everyone), so I had to change fields to survive, but now I just want to work back in the field I am passionate about. Anyway, that's probably more than enough information. If this post isn't suited for this sub please kindly let me know. Otherwise, I welcome any and all help and constructive suggestions. Thank you!

How to travel to family more often without going broke?

I live in Portland, OR and most of my family lives in South Florida. It is a very long flight (averages 8 hours usually but sometimes can be longer with a layover). It is also very expensive for my financials, usually $450-$650 during normal times but $800-$1k+ for holidays. I don’t get to see my family often because of this. I don’t make a lot so I see family about every 4 years rather than every year. It’s important to me to change this. Does anyone have any tips on how to make this possible?

Low Humidity & Mild Winters

Currently living in Portland, OR. I love it here but I am considering moving closer to family as the plane tickets to get back to them are never cheap and the flight(s) can be very long. Never really have had to deal with much snow and am afraid of driving in a lot of it honestly. (EDIT: I can deal with it being pretty cold, but unsure what to do with robust snowfall). I grew up in Florida and I’m unsure I can take hot and humid year round again. Would love if I could just pick up and move Portland closer as it ticks off my boxes to a lot of things (except for high COL), but obviously that’s not humanly possible. I would even consider staying on the west coast if there was a direct flight to south Florida that didn’t cost an arm and a leg and also was less than 8 hours long. I realize I may be asking for a lot… but I’m open to any and all suggestions. Thank you.

Mermaiding: Do you open your eyes underwater?

I see quite a few mermaids online that do so, specifically in lakes or rivers, and I wonder if that’s okay? (As an example @the_magic_crafter does this often but far from the only one) Do most folks swim with their eyes closed? I rarely see folks with goggles but I know that many do use them! My fear is bacteria and amoebas 😬 in natural waters even ones that are fridgid cold. I grew up swimming in pools and playing mermaids there but when I swam in the ocean I rarely opened my eyes underwater (because ouch saltwater). I didn’t grow up around (swimmable) rivers or lakes so I don’t know what’s normal for swimming in those. I guess… my general question is: do y’all just swim underwater blindly if not in a pool? Like are your eyes completely closed? Any advice or experiences welcome! (Hopefully dumb questions are acceptable here) Thanks!

Mermaiding: How to swim underwater with contacts?

I know that usually to swim underwater you would wear googles if you have contacts on so you can see underwater but that doesn’t seem very aesthetically pleasing… do most folks just swim blindly? Are there cute mermaiding googles out there? Recently I tried on a friend’s tail for the first time and I’m hooked but unsure the logistics of this so I’m reaching out here to ask! Thanks in advance for the advice :)

EDIT: I understand to not swim / open your eyes underwater in contacts. I apologize if my title was confusing. I’m asking what folks do instead to actually see underwater. Do you: Close your eyes and hope for the best? Open your eyes (no contacts) and just see shapes? Use prescription googles? What are the alternatives?

Life After Teaching: What are you doing now?

I am wondering what jobs / careers folks have transitioned to after teaching and why?

I work in childcare (ages 6-12) and when I first entered the field, I had the intention to get a masters to teach in a public school setting. Now after being so burnt out and overstimulated I’m not inclined to do that. I have even considered preschool teaching (another degree + student loan debt yay) but unsure about that route either. Most days I fantasize about leaving the profession all together but, unsure what options there are in this current job climate. So all this to say, I would love to hear others’ stories and experiences as to what they have transitioned to and why that ended up being a good fit for you!

Thanks in advance :)
