Has anyone here received an offshore non-priority 190 grant after June?
I’m trying to figure out whether offshore 190 grants are moving at all after MD119. Thanks.
Applied for 190 (offshore, non-priority occupation) in April 2025 - how much longer might I have to wait for the grant?
Given the MD119 that has come into effect I’m worried about how much longer my application will take to process. DHA website says they are processing offshore 190 applications from February 2025.
New Swift hybrid plus for 30k or used 2022 Corolla (below 50000 km on odo) for 23k?
Price difference aside, Is the Corolla significantly more comfortable and/or reliable than the Swift to justify buying used?
What’s going to happen to offshore 190 applications with the MD119 in effect?
I’m waiting for the grant since April 2025. I fall into category 5 (lowest priority) under the new ministerial directive. Does the new directive mean that offshore applications are paused indefinitely until all the onshore ones in queue are done processing?
2026 Suzuki Swift Hybrid Plus or Kia Stonic base model (both mild hybrids)?
Which is the better car for Sydney suburbs? The Stonic is attractive due to being bigger and having higher ground clearance, but do you all think the Swift is better in any way? Thanks.
How reliable is the dual clutch transmission on the base i30 sedan?
If buying brand new, should I be worried about the DCT on the i30 hybrid? DCTs in general don’t have the best reliability record. Having a warranty is reassuring but I’d avoid the fuss of having to repair a broken transmission if possible.
Recent trend in 190 visa grants (onshore vs offshore)
Based on what I see on the website smartvisaguide a lot of onshore 190 visas have being granted during July. Has anyone who applied offshore got their grant this month?
I’m genuinely curious - what makes skilled visa application processing times so long?
This applies to 190,189 and 491 as well. I know there are hundreds of thousands of applications to process, but surely 1.5-2 years for a single application is excessive? I refuse to believe it’s genuine incompetence of the DHA.
Please suggest non-clinical jobs that don’t require sitting in an office all day for someone with a medical background
Anyone from a medical background who transitioned into non-clinical jobs that allowed you to be on the move rather than be confined to an office space, please share your suggestions. Thank you!
Median cost of living for a couple in Sydney
I know this depends a lot of individual lifestyle, but I’d like to know on average how much a couple should expect to spend for a month, excluding rent. For context, we don’t have kids and don’t drink or go out all that much. Thank you.
Median living costs in Newcastle for a couple?

Hyundai Venue (compact SUV) or Suzuki Swift hybrid (light hatch) for driving in and around Newcastle?
Anyone from around Newcastle and Maitland/Hunter please do share your opinion on which kind of car is better for roads and traffic conditions in your city and suburbs. I’ve heard that Novocastrians rely on personal cars a lot as public transport is a bit unreliable. I’m looking to buy a sub-30k new car when I move to Newcastle and these are the ones i have shortlisted in this price range. I was wondering if the higher ground clearance of the Venue is preferable or is it wiser to buy the Swift and save on fuel costs. Thank you very much.
Is the Swift hybrid too flimsy to handle a collision?
Considering the Swift as a new car but I’m worried about how light it is. The body panels must be pretty thin too. My Yaris got banged up pretty bad when a car rear ended it at moderate speed so I’m not too sure about structural integrity of light hatches now. I’d appreciate it if anyone can provide some insight. Thank you!
What do Novocastrians do for entertainment?
Aside from the beach and ocean-related activities, what do you all do for fun, especially if you don’t drink alcohol?
How’s the ride quality and steering “feel” on the 2025/26 Swift hybrid?
I’ve heard the suspension is on the firm side…but is it harsh because the car is pretty low and close to the ground? Asking because I currently have an older Yaris hatch and I feel every little bump and vibration through the steering wheel at moderate speed and it’s very tiring after a while.
Is the 2025/26 Swift hybrid comfortable to drive for longer trips?
Seeing that it’s a light hatch with 3 cylinders how’s the driver comfort level for longer drives on the highway? I have an older Yaris hatch from 2016 and it’s uncomfortable for long trips because of vibrations and lots of road/engine noise. Is the experience going to be different with the Swift which is also a light hatch, but arguably a much newer car? Thanks!
Non-clinical medical/public health jobs in NSW
For context, I’ll be moving to NSW soon as a permanent resident from overseas and my wife will join me after a couple of months. We are both licensed GPs in our home country and are still in the process of obtaining AMC registration. We’d appreciate any suggestions regarding what sort of jobs we might be able to find until we obtain our medical practitioner licenses and find medical jobs in Australia.
Both of us have experience in health organisation management and community health services leadership and coordination (which led to a positive skills assessment for skilled migration). So jobs like NDIS house manager, disability services coordinator are potential choices; a friend of mine who’s from a similar background to us is working as an assistant disability centre manager in NSW. Another person I know is working temporarily as a phlebotomist after obtaining a phlebotomy certification.
Are there any other non-clinical health-related jobs that don’t require AHPRA registration that we haven’t thought of or heard of yet? Thank you for your suggestions and advice.
If your family’s combined income was AUD 150-180k per annum, where would you live in NSW?
For context, my wife and I will be moving to NSW sometime soon from overseas (as permanent residents) and judging by listings on job sites we expect to be able to earn a combined income of approximately 150k AUD yearly or slightly more based on our skills and experience. This is us trying to err on the safe side. We hope to be able to buy our own home after a few years. We don’t have children and don’t have plans to have kids any time soon either. Under these circumstances where would you recommend we reside? Sydney or somewhere more remote like Newcastle? Thank you very much.
Installing a dash cam - should the power cable be “tucked in” to the upholstery (NSW)?
I have a simple dashcam that connects to a usb port for power. Is it illegal to leave the power cable dangling vertically from the mounted cam to the USB port in the car because it partially cuts across the field of view through the windshield?
