It's not getting better
When I first figured out I was gay I was looking at the world like it was. Being other wasn't actively as dangerous there was a future in sight where I wasn't in danger. Then when I figured out I was nonbinary after years of not conforming to gender norms i knew life would be slightly harder.
I am lucky in the sense that I can still use my given pronouns, and that the nickname I've used for years is something I truly identify with. But with recent developments of the place I now live I fear that not only my future, but my life is at risk. Who I am how I dress and how I present myself is deeply personal, and I fear that sometime in the near future I might have to trim away what makes myself me.
My right to marriage, my right to vote, my right to live in the public eye without fear of crimes against me is at risk. the adults who are supposed to protect me, supposed to watch over the next generation are too focused on the unborn. I think it's because the unborn are in many ways still only an idea. They can't be disabled in need of aid, they can't be people of color, they can't be opinionated, they can't have made mistakes yet. But that's the thing, they are the perfect tool to fake care.
And again, in many ways I lucked out, when it comes to the pyramid of minorities I do hit somewhere higher in the eyes of idiocy. I'm white, AMAB, not disabled, my nickname is something my family uses enthusiastically, my pronouns are something I don't really care about and my gender expression rarely leans feminine beyond what society finds acceptable. If the worst is to happen and all the ways I am me become criminalized again, I am able to hide myself like a shameful secret.
But I think to the trans women facing risk for just existing in a way that means they don't want to kill themselves. I think to the POC facing deportation to a country they've never stepped foot in all for the crime of not being white. I think to the trans men, erased by our culture because they aren't as publicly in danger, even though they face far higher sexual assault risks. I think to everyone too ill to work a steady job slowly dying because they can't access care. And finally I think to women, half of our population is slowly having their rights and autonomy stripped away because of old white men.
When you discriminate, criminalize and kill every singly minority you don't get utopia, you end up with noone but a circlejerk of men who can't understand why the world is collapsing. It has gotten better, but if it doesn't stop improving it's going to go backwards.
