I have a strong feeling my firm is hiring to replace me — should I get ahead of it?

Hey all,

I’ve been working as an admin at a boutique financial firm in NYC for the past two years. When I started, I was very upfront that I wanted to build longevity in the role. Obviously, I know that can never be guaranteed, but genuinely, that was my goal.

This week, I got a pretty strong hunch that they’re hiring to replace me. I’ve seen communication and calendar invites between my boss and the recruiter who originally hired me, along with a job description that appears to be essentially my exact role, but for about $30K less.

I’m really, really bummed, but at this point, I also feel like the evidence is pretty clear. My suspicion is that they may be waiting for me to finish a big project that’s about to wrap up and then let me go, potentially as soon as next week. Obviously, I don’t know that for sure.

I’ve already started putting out resumes, but I’m wondering if I should also get ahead of this and schedule a check-in with my boss. Not in an accusatory way, but maybe just ask if there’s anything I could be doing better or improving on. Part of me thinks that if there’s something I can fix, I’d really like the opportunity to do it before they make a decision. Of course, I realize having that conversation could also potentially speed things up.

I’m just really, really sad. I wanted this job to be long-term, and I honestly can’t afford another job search right now. I’ve already had several jumps on my resume for reasons that weren’t always within my control, and the idea of having to start over again is incredibly disheartening.

What would you do? Would you have the conversation and try to get ahead of it, or keep your head down, continue job searching, and see what happens?
Thank you.

I suspect my role is being backfilled, would you confront your boss?

Hey y’all, I have reason to believe my firm is hiring for my role, and honestly, I’m pretty sad and bummed about it.

I’ve been with the firm for two years, and I haven’t received any bad performance reviews or any straightforward feedback that would make me think my job is at risk. That said, I also don’t necessarily think this is the kind of firm that would give you a lot of warning or have a very direct conversation about something like this.

At this point, it seems pretty obvious, and I’m wondering if I should get ahead of it. Would you ask your boss directly about it if you had reason to believe they were hiring for your position? Part of me thinks I should ask, not in an accusatory way, but more along the lines of: Wanting to check in, is there anything I should be doing differently? Is there anything I need to improve? What can I do to make sure I’m the person they want to keep?

I’d much rather have an honest conversation and know where I stand than sit here and speculate. And if there are things I need to improve, I’d genuinely like the opportunity to work on them.

I also can’t help feeling hurt that they may have started looking externally instead of talking to me first. I’ve been here for two years and would have appreciated the chance to understand what wasn’t working and try to fix it.

What would you do? Would you ask directly and try to get ahead of it, or would you wait and see what happens? Thank you. 🙏

Edit to add: We’re a pretty small firm, only 14 people, so this isn’t your standard large corporate environment where there might be a lot of layers around something like this.

NYC EA Job Market - How bad is it?

Hi everyone, just checking in to see how the NYC Executive Assistant job market is right now.

I’m freaking out a little because it looks like I’m going to be laid off. To make matters worse, my company is hiring for essentially my role, but at around 40% less than what I currently make. I’m trying not to spiral, but I’m definitely nervous about having to get back into the job market.

I genuinely like what I do and have built a career as an EA, but my resume has a lot of short-lived positions at this point. Most of them weren’t really by choice, a lot came from company acquisitions, mergers, restructurings, etc., but I’m exhausted from having to explain all of the movement and then start the job search process over again.

Honestly, I’m frustrated and emotional about it. I could cry just thinking about having to go through interviews, applications, explaining my resume, and starting from scratch again.

For those currently hiring or job searching in NYC: how is the EA market right now?

I’m typically looking in the $120K–$130K range, ideally for a role where I can actually settle in and grow rather than having another short stint due to circumstances outside my control. Would really appreciate any insight, encouragement, or reality checks from people currently in the NYC EA market. Thank you

Looking for Fun bars near Ritz NoMad for Friday night drinks?

Looking for a fun spot to grab drinks after dinner tonight (Friday) around 9–10 p.m.

I’ve already seen a lot of the usual cocktail bar recommendations, but I’m specifically looking for somewhere with:
- A lively, social atmosphere
- A crowd that’s not too young (30s+ is ideal)
- A place where you can usually walk in and hang out at the bar without needing reservations or waiting an hour

We went to Oscar Wilde last night, so looking for something different. Any recommendations within a reasonable walk from the Ritz NoMad?

Is Summer Streets actually worth it if you’re not a cyclist?

I always hear people say Summer Streets is one of the best things NYC has to offer, and I definitely appreciate the idea behind it. Was thinking of going to Park Ave this Saturday but the more videos I watch, the more it seems like it’s mostly for cyclists.

As someone who would just want to walk, is it actually enjoyable? Especially with kids. Or do you mostly end up feeling like you’re in the cyclists’ way? I don’t want to be an annoyance to them either. Curious what the experience is and what’s so fun about it if you don’t plan on riding on running

Giving away two tickets to Wyatt Waddell at Blue Note tonight at 8 PM. I got them through DoMoreNYC but can’t make it anymore.

DM me if you’re interested and I'll email them to you! I just ask that your message history is visible so I can see you’re a real person, or that you have some karma, or at least include more than two words in your message so I know you’re not a bot/fake account :)

Also, if anyone is generally interested in getting free tickets to events, my DoMore referral code is here. It gets me a free month, and you get one too!

Cooperate gift ideas for a new-born

Hi rockstars!

Any baby gift ideas for our attorney who just welcomed a newborn boy? I already have my usual list of go-to gifts, but the budget for this one is a little lower, around $75–100.

Thanks!

I have the perfect man and I want him to leave me alone

I have the kind of partner people dream about.

He’s intelligent, successful, handsome, thoughtful, fiercely loyal, endlessly supportive, and loves me in a way that still catches me off guard. He notices the smallest things I mention and somehow remembers all of them. He cooks for me, brings me flowers for no reason, plans dates, helps clean my apartment, just quietly tries to remove things from my plate without being asked.

And I am so fucking tired.

Not because of him. Not because of us. I love this man and I’m not going anywhere.

But I have 900 tabs open in my brain at all times, and “be present and sensual” is simply not one of them.

But for him, he loves intimacy. Like really loves it. He’s super attracted to me, super affectionate, and just one of those people who loves deeply and physically. He doesn’t make me feel bad about it. But instead of leaving it alone, he tries to fix it. He reads books about women. He comes up with new ideas. He puts in even more effort. And I know that comes from such a loving place and I cannot explain why it makes me want to disappear into the wall.

I don’t want to be figured out. I don’t want a new approach. I want to be left alone and I don’t know how to say that to someone who responds to everything with more love.

I always know it’s there on top of his mind and he always wants it. Even when he says nothing, I know. And somehow that knowing makes me want it even less.

The guilt is its own thing too, because this isn’t some selfish guy demanding stuff from me. He gives constantly. Which somehow makes me feel worse, because I feel like I have nothing left to give back and sex is the one thing I can offer so I do it out of that feeling and I KNOW that’s not right but here we are.

And it’s not even just sex anymore.

I don’t want to be kissed. I don’t want my body kissed. I don’t want foreplay, romance, or cuddling. I don’t want to be touched at all, by anyone, ever, goodbye.

I can still get aroused so it’s not a physical thing. It’s everything around it. The buildup, the romance, the whole production. I want it fast and I want zero fuss.

Which is unhinged because HE approaches sex like it’s a spiritual experience and I’m mentally drafting my grocery list. I hate even writing that. He deserves better than that thought. But it’s the truth.

My dream scenario lately is sitting in the same room together in total silence while nobody needs anything from anybody.

Is anyone else just… done? Not done with their person. Not done with their relationship. Just done being a sexual being entirely?

Tell me I’m not alone in this because I really need to hear it right now. For context, I’m 38, so for sure approaching Perimenopausal symptoms.

Dinner: Wasa crackers, one topped with a Laughing Cow lite wedge with two slices of pastrami and the other with a little cherry tomato and red onion relish I whipped up.

Am I Missing the 35+ Social Scene in NYC?

I’ve been wondering if I’m just looking in the wrong places.

I genuinely enjoy going out. Not clubbing until 3 AM, but dinners, restaurant bars, lounges, happy hours, and places where people are actually social and open to talking to each other. I like being around people who are out enjoying life after work or on a Friday night.

What confuses me is that whenever I travel—to places like Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, or DC—I can walk into the bar area of a good restaurant and see plenty of people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s having drinks, meeting friends, chatting, and generally having a good time. There seems to be a very visible professional social scene.

Back in NYC, I feel like I keep missing that crowd.

I spend plenty of time in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and I often feel like I run into one of three things: a very young crowd, hotel bars where a cocktail is $38, or nightlife that just isn’t really my speed anymore. Maybe I’m simply going to the wrong places.

To be clear, I’m not looking for dating advice, networking events, or organized activities. Those are all perfectly fine, but what I’m really curious about is where people casually go out. Where are the places where the 35–50 crowd is grabbing a drink, sitting at a restaurant bar, meeting friends, lingering for a few hours, and being social?

And please don’t tell me to leave NYC—I love New York and it’s home. That’s actually why I’m asking. There are millions of people here in this age range, so I assume this scene exists somewhere and I’ve just failed to find it.

Am I missing certain neighborhoods? Certain restaurant bars? Steakhouses? Lounges? Recurring spots?

Or is this one of those weird NYC things where everyone my age is somehow living in Rye or Connecticut?

At this point I’m half convinced we all need to pick a restaurant bar somewhere and collectively decide it’s our spot.

Someone I know was about to throw out two bags of toddler books in the garbage 😭 so I took them instead. I was planning to donate them to my local library, but it’s currently closed for renovations.

They’re all in good, used condition. Would love for them to go to someone with little ones or anyone who knows a place that could use them!

Let me know if you’re interested. I‘m by Astoria Blvd & Crescent
