I have a strong feeling my firm is hiring to replace me — should I get ahead of it?
Hey all,
I’ve been working as an admin at a boutique financial firm in NYC for the past two years. When I started, I was very upfront that I wanted to build longevity in the role. Obviously, I know that can never be guaranteed, but genuinely, that was my goal.
This week, I got a pretty strong hunch that they’re hiring to replace me. I’ve seen communication and calendar invites between my boss and the recruiter who originally hired me, along with a job description that appears to be essentially my exact role, but for about $30K less.
I’m really, really bummed, but at this point, I also feel like the evidence is pretty clear. My suspicion is that they may be waiting for me to finish a big project that’s about to wrap up and then let me go, potentially as soon as next week. Obviously, I don’t know that for sure.
I’ve already started putting out resumes, but I’m wondering if I should also get ahead of this and schedule a check-in with my boss. Not in an accusatory way, but maybe just ask if there’s anything I could be doing better or improving on. Part of me thinks that if there’s something I can fix, I’d really like the opportunity to do it before they make a decision. Of course, I realize having that conversation could also potentially speed things up.
I’m just really, really sad. I wanted this job to be long-term, and I honestly can’t afford another job search right now. I’ve already had several jumps on my resume for reasons that weren’t always within my control, and the idea of having to start over again is incredibly disheartening.
What would you do? Would you have the conversation and try to get ahead of it, or keep your head down, continue job searching, and see what happens?
Thank you.
