It's a well known trope among entrepreneurs and productivity-obsessed folk that 20% of your efforts will bring 80% of your results and I'm still unsure if I'm buying into it.

Even if true, I think the 80% energy you used that didn't lead to big results, led to lessons you had to learn in order to narrow down to the 20% that made the greatest impact.

That said, it also implies that you don't need to give 100% of your energy all the time. Once you've figured out what the most impactful 20% is, you can remove the less impactful 80% of your actions.

Entrepreneurship looks like a dream from the outside. On the inside, it takes a lot of courage & stamina to wake up each morning and keep hacking at it, and even then, things don't go to plan. Businesses sometimes grow slowly and you still have to figure out a way to pay your bills.

I am currently using AI to build a custom website by myself. Previously this would've costed me thousands of dollars to get right and manage over time. But there are many use cases for AI that I don't even know about yet, and I think we could all benefit from inspiring each other on how to improve our lives, for free/very little, using new technology.

I read every morning and that’s when questions like this one arise. I read about accountability partners earlier (Atomic Habits). I tried it myself once or twice before but never quite stuck with it. Might try it again depending on the anecdotal data we gather here haha

How/What do you “report” to them?
How often?
Are there any consequences involved if you fail to do something?

In all honesty, I think I never persevered with it because it felt awkward. But I’ve always enjoyed and have been motivated working side by side with driven people, e.g my partner. That’s not the same thing but we’d still ask each other at the end of the day what we’ve achieved.

I’m 100% onboard with that and thought this is a useful follow up question that needs attention in its own right.

How do you catch yourself when you’re doing busywork?

What questions do you ask yourself to check that you’re working on the right things?

What about “somewhat valuable” tasks that end up eating 2x the time you thought they would? Do you have any methods to prevent yourself from spending time on the wrong things, eg do you try to assign a set time block for a task? What do you do if it spills?

And what about tasks that don’t move the needle much but still need to be done, like customer care or replying to emails… or posting on Reddit? (Which sometimes take longer than I’d like to admit and I’m very guilty of)
