▲ 16 r/mumbai

BMC has declared a holiday for all schools on 07-07-2026, due to heavy rainfall.

But instead of announcing holidays one day at a time, wouldn't it be better to declare a short monsoon break or a week-long vacation if the weather forecast predicts continuous heavy rain?

Daily late-night announcements create uncertainty for parents, students, teachers, school transport, and schools. Everyone has to wait until the last minute to know whether schools will remain open.

A planned monsoon break would be more practical, reduce confusion, and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of continuous heavy rainfall. Schools can always adjust the academic calendar later to make up for the lost days.

Who else remembers those monsoon school days?

Today's school kids are blessed.

If there's a holiday due to heavy rain, they get a notification instantly on their phone, school app, WhatsApp, SMS, or email, sometimes even a day in advance.

During our time, we'd wake up early, get ready, wear our raincoats, pack our tiffin & heavy school bags, and head to school without knowing whether it would be open or not. Only after reaching the school gate would we find out that a holiday had been declared due to heavy rain.

The excitement of cheering with friends and walking back home in the rain was a different kind of happiness.

It wasn't convenient, but those unexpected rain holidays created some of the best monsoon school memories.

Who else remembers those monsoon school days?

90s kids, 2000s kids, & even early 2010s kids know exactly what this felt like.

Two youths allegedly drown at Pandavkada Falls, Kharghar.

Another incident has been reported at Pandavkada Falls in Kharghar, where two young men were allegedly swept away and feared drowned during the monsoon.

Rescue operations were launched, but both remained untraced as of the latest reports.

This isn't the first tragedy at Pandavkada. Every monsoon, despite repeated warnings, barricades, and danger signs, people continue entering restricted areas. The site has witnessed multiple fatal accidents over the years, yet the same cycle repeats.

NMMC declares second-half holiday for all afternoon session schools due to heavy rainfall

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has issued an official notice declaring a holiday for all afternoon session schools today i.e.03/07/2026 due to the ongoing heavy rainfall across the city.

For schools that were already functioning in the morning, students are to be handed over only to their parents or an authorized guardian, with student safety being given the highest priority.

If you have children studying in NMMC or private schools, it's a good to check with the school for any further updates or transport arrangements.

Mumbai should have Monsoon Holidays instead of such long Summer Vacations.

As a native, I've seen Mumbai's monsoons all my life, including the 26th July, 2005 floods. While no monsoon since has matched the scale of 2005, we still face many of the same problems every single year.

Every rainy season, it's the same thing -

  • Waterlogged roads and railway stations.
  • Poor drainage despite pre-monsoon cleaning claims.
  • Traffic jams that bring the city to standstill.
  • Delays and disruptions to local trains and buses.
  • Power cuts and internet outages.
  • Short circuits caused by water entering electrical infrastructure, making some areas unsafe.
  • Students walking through flooded roads to attend school, while thousands of office-goers struggle with delayed trains, traffic, and waterlogged streets just to reach work.

During heavy rain, many students and office goers spend more time travelling than actually studying or working. Sometimes schools remain open even when roads are waterlogged, making the commute difficult and unsafe.

Not saying we should remove the summer vacation. But maybe Mumbai and other coastal cities could have a slightly shorter summer break and keep a few Monsoon Holidays that can be used during heavy rainfall, flooding, or red alert days.

Since not every city faces the kind of monsoon Mumbai does, having the same holiday calendar everywhere doesn't always make sense. A schedule that takes local weather into account would be much more practical.

How Is this Developer Acquiring Prime Land So Quickly?

Aspect Realty appears to be expanding rapidly across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), with what seems to be another project coming up in Vashi, Navi Mumbai.

Genuinely curious because Maharashtra is widely regarded as one of the most challenging states for land acquisition. Even large government infrastructure projects and established private developers often face delays of several years due to fragmented land ownership, redevelopment negotiations, legal clearances, regulatory approvals, and other procedural hurdles.

Despite that, this developer appears to be launching projects at a relatively fast pace across the MMR.

Interested to understand how this is achieved. Is it primarily through redevelopment agreements, joint ventures, strong financial backing, or another business strategy?

Mahape's MBP: One of MMR's Business Parks in This Condition?

Recently visited Millennium Business Park (MBP), Mahape near Rupa Solitaire to pick up a friend and was surprised by the condition of the surroundings.

What I saw:

  • Large piles of garbage and construction waste near the road.
  • Litter scattered around the parking area and footpaths.
  • People smoking openly in common and public areas, making it unpleasant to stand nearby.
  • Empty beer and alcohol glass bottles along with other waste lying around.
  • A pan stall operating inside the campus.
  • A scrap yard within the premises, which seemed out of place for a major business park.

Thousands of people commute from Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai to work at MBP every day. With the monsoon here, unmanaged waste can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and create hygiene issues for employees and visitors. This is the impression many people get when they come here for work or other purpose.

Hopefully, the concerned authorities take notice and improve the cleanliness and maintenance of this area.

  • Bangladesh signed an agreement with a Chinese state-owned company for the development of the Mongla Port Economic Zone.
  • The project was originally allocated to India but was later removed before being reassigned.
  • Mongla is Bangladesh’s second-largest port and holds importance for regional trade and connectivity.

Mahape - MBP Business Park or Dumping Ground ?

Recently visited Millennium Business Park (MBP), Mahape near Rupa Solitaire and was surprised by the condition of the surroundings.

I had visited MBP a few years ago, & remember it being much cleaner and better maintained.

What I saw:

  • Large piles of garbage and construction waste near the road.
  • Litter scattered around the parking area and footpaths.
  • People smoking openly in common & public areas, making it unpleasant to stand nearby.
  • Empty beer & alcohol glass bottles along with other waste lying around.
  • A pan stall operating inside the campus.
  • A scrap yard within the premises, which seemed out of place for a major business park.

With the monsoon here, unmanaged waste can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and create hygiene issues for the thousands of employees and visitors who come here every day.

Navi Mumbai is often known as one of India's cleanest and smartest cities. So what happened here? It's disappointing to see one of the city's major business hubs in this condition.

Who is responsible for maintaining the common areas around MBP? Is it MIDC, NMMC, or the park management? Hopefully the concerned authorities improve the cleanliness and maintenance of this area.

Is India doing enough to build its own hardware ecosystem, or will we remain dependent on imports?

In the last few months, we've seen several reports saying the same thing.

  • AI demand is increasing the prices of RAM and SSDs.
  • Apple has increased the prices of some Macs and iPads because memory has become more expensive.
  • Experts say laptops, desktops and smartphones may become even more expensive.
  • More Indians are buying phones and laptops on longer EMIs because they have become costlier.

India is one of the world's biggest IT and technology hubs. We have millions of engineers, a large startup ecosystem and a fast-growing digital economy. Today, people of all ages depend on technology. Students, working professionals, small business owners and many others need laptops, desktops and smartphones for education, work and daily life. Because of this, affordability has become very important. Rising prices make it harder for many people to buy these essential devices.

But why are we still so dependent on imports for basic hardware? not even talking about advanced AI chips.

We still don't manufacture at a large scale:

  • RAM (DRAM)
  • Flash memory (NAND)
  • SSDs
  • HDDs
  • USB pen drives
  • Memory cards

Most of these products are either imported or assembled using imported components.

When global memory prices increase, Indians have no option but to pay more. A laptop that was affordable a year ago can suddenly become Rs.5,000-Rs.15,000 more expensive. Many people are now buying laptops and phones on 24 or 36 month EMIs because they can't afford to pay the full price.

India has started investing in semiconductor and electronics assembly, which is a positive step. But are we doing enough to build our own hardware ecosystem?

TL:DR: What are the biggest challenges? Is it the high cost of investment, technology, patents, supply chains, skilled manufacturing, government policy, or something else?
