Suddenly tall

As a double leg amputee, people assume I pick my own height. I don’t get much say in the matter, its the components that determine it. I can pick my shoe size though.

One pair of legs had me about 5’ 6” which had it’s benefits. I’ve been 6’ 0” to 6’ 1” for many years. That’s barely in the Tall spectrum in my brain. As they replace parts in my legs my height goes up or down a half inch every couple years. If I remember correctly I was 5’ 11” back when you could tickle my toes. (Over 23 years ago)

Last Friday I got new feet. I’m suddenly 6’ 2.5” or maybe 6’ 3”. And I’m suddenly seeing the world differently.

I’m noticing dust on top of things. I’m realizing I need to watch for hanging things now. I notice I see the top of more heads than before. A tree branch nearly took out an eye!

Sitting is different too! Not leg room (hip to knee) but knee to floor as that’s where the hardware is. I had to slide the seat back in the car and now that’s going to be an issue as we are no longer similar height and the seat will get adjusted often.

I know many of y’all are taller. But what’s getting me is the sudden onset of Tall. Y’all grew into it. Here I am, freshly 60 and suddenly having to adjust to 2 extra inches.

And what happens if in 3-4 years my next set of feet drop me back down?

Oh and I have to buy new pants now too. Good thing I wear shorts most of the time.

Complaining or Bragging?

My prosthetist hooked me up with new feet today. I trialed them for a week six weeks ago, Blatchford Elanic, a hydraulic electronic foot.
Oddly he asked me several times what my height was before amputation. It’s been 24+ years so I don’t really recall.

Because they needed to change adapters and stuff my height changed and I’m now 6’ 2” where I’ve been about 6’ 0” for several years.

I guess it’ll take some time to get adjusted to the new height. Sadly I just shortened up a pair of pants that were too long, I’ll have to re-hem them.

I had one pair of feet that made me about 5’ 5” for working on some things and used them at the beach.

Another pair of legs I made myself 6’ 4” which was great for painting ceilings.

So am I bragging or complaining about my new height? I’m not sure. 😆

Dashcam and power

I recently connected my dashcam to our new Mazda CX-50 using the ODB connector and ran into problems.

The 12v socket (cigarette lighter) in the dash does not stay powered on when the car is off. This means my dashcam won’t record if someone hits me while parked.

I bought an ODB - USB plug for the car. It didn’t fit into the ODB connector because of the trim. I bought a 6” ODB extension and I was able to plug it in and it worked.

BUT the car was dead the next time we went to use it. Had it jumped and it happened again.

We took the car to Mazda and they said the problem is the ODB plug. They said the ODB plug was sending signals to the car causing it to keep the electrical systems active and that was draining the battery.

The tech at Mazda said that our car, and many new cars come with a battery that is adequate. He noted that we aren’t the first people to have this problem. His solution: replace our new battery (valued at $300) with a higher capacity battery that was around $400-450.00. We didn’t do that.

I took the ODB plug out and googled the pin specs for ODB port power.
Using a pair of small needle nose pliers I pulled out pins that transmit data to the car. See photo.
I left the two end pins on the top and bottom and the two center pins on the top row. For the geeks, I left pins 1, 4, 5, 8 on top and pins 9 and 16 on the bottom.

I’ve had it in the car for several days and have not had any problems.

When we are going to be gone for a long time we can flip a switch near the dashcam to turn it off and on without going under the dash to the orb port.

Your favorite online store sells the ODB plug, ODB extension and (in my photo) a USB-C to USB-C switch.

Paperless 2.20 not importing duplicate file

I'm still running Paperless 2.20. I've noticed this for a while and am finally getting around to asking.

I have documents placed in the Consume folder and yes, it does consume them. But occasionally I'll put something in there that's already in paperless. It generates an entry in File Tasks, as expected.

What has me puzzled though is these duplicate items remain in the Consume folder. Paperless tries to consume it again and again.

Why does Paperless continue to try consuming it?

Shouldn't Paperless automatically remove the item from the Conume folder? Or at least move it to a "rejected" folder.

here's the entries from the File Tasks:

Dashcam install video (front and rear cameras)

In a different post there were questions about how to install a dashcam and how to run the wiring. I made and uploaded this video to help people with questions. It covers running power to the 12v cigarette lighter port or running the power to a USB adapter that goes in the OBD port for constant power when the car is off. It also covers running cables to the rear window for a rear mounted camera.

Yeah, it's a long video but I know some people want more detail than some of the videos out there. I hope this helps you.

This is not the only way to install the camera and cables, but it's how I did it.

The daahcam in the video is not Viofo but the cams actually in use are Viofo 229 and I really like them.

EDIT: apparently the camera is sending signals to the car via the ODB port and drains the battery. That's the official answer from Mazda after the ODB port killed the car. Twice.

Covers matter

We talk about covers frequently. I was recently in a Target store looking at their book selections.

I saw several books with flowery design not just on the cover but on the edges of the page (all three sides). It made the book look very pretty. All the flowers made me think “romance”.

But not quite the romance book my mom would read. Although I could see her picking it up just based on the cover.

I read the back cover and the book is a Heated Rivalry clone. Yep. Male on male hockey romance covered with flowers on every edge of the book.

I found the same book on Amazon with a much more appropriate cover. Maybe someone goofed at the printers and Target is selling them at a huge discount?

Running cable to rear window

I need to run a cable to the rear window for the rear-facing camera that’s part of the dash cam.

I’ll start by saying the car is two weeks old.

In my Ford Flex I routed the cable through part of the plastic and the rubber cable tubes seen in the photo above.

On the Mazda CX-50 there is lots of plastic trim and I will catch hell if it doesn’t look factory perfect.

Suggestions from someone who has removed this trim are appreciated.

ACM hell

In July of 2025 I paid the local Ford dealer to replace the Audio Control Module in my 2018 Flex. $800

In December the battery died. Had AAA replace it.

This January it started happening again. I talked to Ford and they said it had a 3 year parts and labor warranty but they wanted to see it while it was failing.

Wtf? It’s intermittent!

Early May and the car is dead. Again. This was around the 4th of May.

AAA comes and replaces the battery under warranty. Three days later the car is dead again. AAA jumped it and said there is something draining the battery.

May 11 our Ford C-Max got totaled so the Flex was now our only car and naturally it got worse.

Then It happened. It started making static and while I didn’t have the time I drove to the Ford dealer. I left it running so they could see it. They agreed it was a bad ACM and would order it.

Then they turned the car off.

It got worse!

The car began an irregular drum beat from the speakers. They brought the tech back out and he could hear the drum beat from 20 feet away. He asked me to turn the car off. I just handed him the fob.

They could t believe the drums were beating with the car off.

It took 10 days (maybe 12) before I got the car back. They replaced the ACM again. They also did some digging and the wires going to the ACM were corroded and that’s what was draining the battery and causing the ACM to fail.

If your ACM goes bad please consider checking the wiring too.

If it goes bad again I’m selling the car.

Car play problem/question

Here’s by big issue with wireless CarPlay:

I start the car in the garage and it connects to my husbands phone.

I back out and drive 3 houses away and turn off the car so it will connect to my phone or I have to plug it in.

How do I restart CarPlay so it connects to my phone without restarting the car?

We had a rental VW Jetta that when started it would ask which phone to connect to CarPlay. Even if only one phone was configured.

Cool dialogue feature

I recently read an old document on the L&L forums that I found cool and wanted to share.
It’s called Dialogue Focus.

Windows: Edit → Writing Tools → Dialogue Focus

Mac version: Edit → Writing Tools → Linguistic Focus. Direct speech.

There is a slider and anything not in quotes can fade using the slider. The faded text is always readable but faded.

It seems like something I’ll use to help me focus on the conversation with the characters.

Edited to add “windows” next to the windows steps to activate it.

Scrivener does not have a valid activation

I'll start by saying I have contacted L&L support on this. I'm just curious if anyone else has had this problem.

Last night my laptop gave this message and I re-entered my license key and was able to work.

This afternoon, same laptop, I got the activation message again. After entering the license info it started up. Within 5 minutes it quit again saying my activation is not valid.

My desktop does not have this problem, at least not at this time.

I'm on Windows 11

Scrivener 3.1.6.0 (2862669) 64 bit 02 Sep 2025 (which is the latest version I see on the website)

I'll update this when I get a response.

Duck walking at MEPS

Someone was asking me about joint popping sounds and thought y’all might laugh at this.

I was at MEPS (US Military Entry Processing center) and they had us Duck Walk.*

I was one of the last guys to do it. When the examiner left the room I asked the guy next to me “did you hear my joints pop?”

A guy at the far end of the room said “we all heard them pop with every step!”

I was mortified, but it did t hurt and they moved me on to the next stage of exams.

*Duck Walk - hunker down, like crouching. Then walk forward without standing up.

I have a 2018 Flex SEL.

Do the lighter plugs shut off when the car is turned off? Or do they still provide power.

Mainly interested in the one in the center console below the temp controls. The other is the one by the passenger left knee.

Thank you!

Edit: thanks for the answers.

I’m asking because I installed a dashcam two weeks ago and yesterday the car battery was dead. (Battery new Nov 17 2025!) my husband blames the new dash camera which has an auto off enabled. I can’t see how it’s the dash camera.
