Am I the only one not upset over the proposed Brick Lane developments?

Hi folks. Tower Hamlets local here, living not far off Brick Lane.

There's been a massive outcry amongst my neighbours and the immediate areas around Brick Lane about the new data centres and redevelopment planned around Brick Lane. The discourse has contained all of the usual outrage over "higher water/electricity consumption, noise pollution & driving up the cost of living." These are all valid concerns about data centres, but from what I've found, that doesn't appear to be the case here.

First and foremost, the new proposed DC is NOT an AI data centre. More on that later.

I've been living in the area for nearly 15 years, and when this news broke out I vaguely recalled something about a data centre on the Old Truman Brewery complex ages ago. So I looked into it and it turns out I'm right: There are already three existing data centres off of Brick Lane; LON1, LON2, & LON3. LON1 has been operating for over 20 years already, since around '01/'02. LON2 opened around 2012/13 & LON3 opened in 2019. Collectively, they are formally called the "Brick Lane Data Centre" by the Environment Agency. Furthermore, all three are supplied with 100% renewable energy. So in all of the collective outrage, many people don't even know that three data centres are already here, and that one has been running for over two decades, another for over a decade. I also looked into noise complaints made during this time and if any were attributable to the existing Brick Lane DCs and the answer is yes; However the owners of the DCs - Interxion - carried out acoustic mitigation works in 2017 and since then, the Environment Agency said those works reduced generator noise and recorded that "there are no known noise complaints regarding the site."

So what's this DC for? According to the proposal, it's for "colocation and low-latency computing for financial institutions", i.e high-frequency trading. They could technically be used for AI but this would be highly unlikely for this particular DC as you need a 100–500+ MW campus (the proposed is only 4 MW, again, similar to the existing three centres). So using this DC for that would be like trying to mow a lawn with garden shears. Can you? Technically yes. Are you going to? Likely not.

The news / my neighbours are also conveniently leaving out a major important piece of the puzzle: The proposed new development isn't just for a data centre (of the same size as one of the existing LON centres) but also a cinema, supermarket, market and 44 homes (6 for social rent). Importantly, the majority of the site is currently a car park and derelict crumbling warehousing blocks which are nothing more today than a magnet for the junkies from the halfway house on Code Street. I actually avoid cutting through and walking past the area entirely, because it's quite literally a cesspool of heroin needles, broken glass from smashed liquor bottles and drug dealing. I actually accidentally got friendly with the main drug dealer's dog because I did not know at the time that the dog was owned by a notorious drug dealer, but that's a story for another time.

Finally, I also looked at any increases in water / electricity costs for locals following the installation of the existing three data centres and couldn't find anything there either. Household electricity tariffs aren't set neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood according to what happens to be plugged into the local substation. Thames Water 2026–27 household price changes apply as usual throughout the area, under revenue limits set by Ofwat. There was a price increase YoY of 3.4% but this was due to "allowed revenues" and service/infrastructure costs, and nothing specific to do at all with the data centres. The existing DCs actually use "free cooling" method (using cool outside air to remove heat from a data centre instead of running energy-heavy refrigeration compressors all the time), so are actually quite energy efficient. I will say that I was not able to find the exact cooling method proposed for the new centre, so that is something to legitamately keep an eye on.

Bottom line: The proposed new DC is NOT a giant AI-training/hyperscale campus. The existing DCs have been sitting in the middle of Brick Lane for years, surrounded by flats, shops and nightlife, and the regulator's formal assessment recorded no known noise complaints. No evidenced increase in electricity or water usage or price has ever also been attributed to them in the last 20 years.

I for one cannot wait for redevelopment of that area - I'm particularly looking forward to the cinema and market, and in my (pipe) dream, maybe being able to buy one of the flats built there if any of them fall under the shared ownership scheme. The area earmarked for development is a dump, and we can only benefit from investment in the area. People don't do 15 minutes of research to see what the proposed plan is about and what may already be in the area. Instead they've been going to bed every night for the last 20 years with 3 DCs already in the area and most are none the wiser - simply pandering to the false outrage.

There ARE valid reasons to be concerned about DCs. This is not one of them.

SOME OTHER CONTEXT: "But what about locals and businesses and building more affordable homes instead!! 30,000 people are on the council house waiting list in TH!!!" - Lutfur Rahman, TH Mayor. First of all, Rahman is an ethnocentric moron (and I say this as a woman with Bangla heritage) who was LITERALLY CONVICTED FOR ELECTION FRAUD AND BANNED FOR RUNNING FOR 5 YEARS FOR BRIBING LOCAL IMAMS TO GET PEOPLE TO VOTE FOR HIM. Why he was even allowed to run again is beyond me, but here we are. TH appealed to the government and the govt said "Ok, submit your own proposal then." TH had nothing more than a verbal wet dream about building 800 affordable homes on that site instead. So what happened? TH never submitted the proposal. Missed the deadline entirely. Couldn't be arsed to submit one apparently, or maybe they realised that actually building 800 homes/flats in an area that size takes a lot of funding that they neither have nor had any plans of raising. So the only proposal on the table was accepted.

ETA: If you want the full context of whether the current proposal was chosen over one that featured more homes (short answer is NO, because literally no other formal plan was ever actually submitted), read below:

A commenter below mentioned that there was a proposal featuring 350 council homes that was turned down, so I researched this and learned this is not true. What actually happened is that TH developed a planning framework/masterplan for the Truman Brewery area that proposed more council homes. Separately, the "Save Brick Lane" campaigners did actually produce a more concrete alternative housing scheme. However neither of them was ever submitted as an actual planning application. In 2024, the council adopted the "Spitalfields and Banglatown Supplementary Planning Document (SPD)" that contained more residential homes (mind you, just the framework which had no plans for who was gonna build it or how), and this is what the Truman Brewery owners challenged on the basis of not being realistic / feasible, and since TH didn't provide any evidence to show how they'd make this happen, the High Court killed it. When it comes to private land (such as the Truman Brewery site), a SPD is nothing more than the council suggesting what, in their opinion, a planning policy for private land should seek if that land is developed. The council can suggest "we think the planning policy should be primarily residential / mixed development". The crucial missing piece is that following this SPD, TH never submitted a planning application to actually develop anything in their SPD. It's a huge failure on the council's part and as a constituent I'm angry about that, but not surprised at all. TH and especially Rahman are good at ragebaiting and crying foul, without actually putting forward a realistic alternative plan.

And speaking of realistic alternative plans, there were two (well, really only one and a half, kinda). The one I mentioned from the Save Brick Lane campaign which was more robust than TH's initial SPD, but failed for the same reason - no planning application submitted. After that, TH actually regrouped and proposed an even larger proposal (larger than what is proposed by the now-approved Truman Brewery owners) called "Brick Lane and Pedley Street” Site Allocation 1.7" which called for 800 new homes. So what was the downfall here? You guessed it. No planning application. Despite that, the Secretary of State did actually review it anyway, but said "there was no detailed evidence of the feasibility and deliverability of the alternative residential-led scheme" and that "There is no alternative residential-led [planning] application before her." Proposals ≠ formal planning applications. What she was faced with in the end was:

  1. An actual detailed planning application submitted by the landowner

vs

  1. A council planning-policy aspiration + an emerging Local Plan allocation + a community-designed residential alternative for land whose owner wasn't proposing to build it, and for which the council had not proposed any means by which to actually fund this development.

She quite literally went with the only option on the table - the only one that submitted a planning application.

Vinted restricted my account because I have a physical disability

ETA to add: I am in the UK and in the UK, you cannot sue without evidenced loss.

Hi folks. I am really at a loss here at even how to describe this, but I am in shock. I'll try to explain my background and the order in which the events happened.

I am disabled and often model the clothes I'm selling on my own body, one because I feel like clothes shown on actual humans sell better and two because I noticed there just weren't any pictures I could find of disabled people modeling clothes. For 90% of my buyers, I've gotten a comments of appreciation for showing the clothes on me. One mum even thanked me because her child for whom she bought my dress is in a wheelchair, and seeing me openly sharing my photos was encouraging for her.

However, sometimes my disability is visible in the picture - it's not too extreme, but you can see the affected body part clearly looks different than how it should be. Last week, suddenly a slew of my listings were hidden by Vinted due to "manipulated images". I don't edit my images beyond adjusting brightness etc so when I queried this with their support they said that it was clear my pictures were manipulated because "aspects of your image appear unnatural and modified." Folks - that would be my disabled body part. Of course it looks different than the rest of me. I find it absolutely abhorrent that they're essentially accusing me of digitally deforming my own body just so that I could use it in a Vinted picture. I immediately replied saying no - that is my physical disability, I am NOT editing my photo to deform my own body!!! I got a reply within 7 seconds saying that their decision was final and my account is restricted for 3 days.

I honestly want to vomit. Because my body is deformed, they assume I must have deformed it myself on purpose for the sake of a few pictures? I am honestly shaking. I'm not a psychopath, so I can't see why anyone would even do this. I pointed out this is discrimination against disabled people and asked for someone senior to review the case but no dice yet. I keep getting the blanket "our decision is final" message and being asked to open a new case. I've done this 4 times already and have gotten nowhere. My account is still restricted and I've done nothing wrong - other than to exist as a disabled person which is wrong according to Vinted.

I also noticed that they randomly hid two of my other listings that I'm not even in. The clothes are on a hanger in those listings, but they said this was a copyright violation as the images were on the web. The only thing I can think of is I used the same photos for my ebay listings, but all the images are my own. Are you not allowed to cross-post your own images??

If anyone has any advice or help, please let me know. I am really shocked and saddened by this.

In there going to be a general sale for Céline's 2027 show?

Hi folks, the last update I saw on the Paris Residency megathread was from 3 months ago, so I thought I'd ask here. I wasn't selected for any of the presales so I do not currently have a ticket for her show. I looked at Event Travel's packages and they appear sold out as well. Does anyone know if there will be a general sale for her 2027 dates? My understanding was that when the 2027 dates were announced, it was only for those who were entered the draw for 2026, but hadn't been selected.

If not, what are the official resale channels?

I am one person (actually disabled, but don't require a wheelchair), so I am hoping to get to go before it becomes too much of an issue for me. Thank you!

Are chuggers, evangelists & addicts ruining the simple pleasure of walking?

In an effort to reduce the amount of time I'm staring at a screen and to give my ears a bit of a break, I've started walking more without looking at my phone or wearing headphones. I had ear surgery a few years ago which permanently makes one ear feel somewhat 'stuffy', so not having anything in it or over it when I don't have to for work feels good. In periods of good weather especially, I love to take in the surroundings and marvel at a fact that I am fortunate to live in a beautiful city, surrounded by thousands of years of history.

However, I noticed that if you don't appear occupied and are walking solo, this makes you a ripe target for all sorts of unpleasantness, even if you actively refuse to make eye contact. The first (in no particular order), are chuggers. I'm now constantly stopped by chuggers who often will literally step directly in front of me forcing me to stop, or who will aggressively wave or call something out at me simply for having the audacity to not be listening to music and looking around my surroundings. I'd prefer not to have to say a single word to them but even when I tell them "No", one literally said "but you're not busy!" and followed me. I believe chuggers are only allowed to follow you for like 5 or 6 steps, and when I called out this guy for following me longer he got aggressive. I took a picture and let the charity company know, but I'm not expecting anything nor should I even HAVE to have taken the time to complain. I should be able to ignore them without being harassed.

Then are the evangelists/proselytisers, which I utterly detest. You can at least argue that chuggers make money for charities (doubtful of how much of this actually goes to the charity). Proselytisers of any kind have absolutely no right to be literally disrupting society. If you've spent any time at Oxford Circus, you will have heard the women on LOUD SPEAKER telling you to accept Jesus or accept the consequences of your sin. No one deserves to be assaulted by this crap. I often commute from Oxford Circus so when you're in a crush of 200 people trying to enter the station, you're literally trapped, forced to listen a penetrating shrieking of how you're apparently going to hell. It's so loud at this stage that I usually do end up putting my headphones in even when I don't want to, but of course, you still hear this garbage because it's on a megaphone. Sometimes they stand right in the middle of the pavement, blocking pedestrian traffic on busy weekend days, again spewing crap through speakers.

Then just yesterday I was walking past a tube station and noticed two women handing flyers out with "JESUS" written on them. I ignored them but as I got closer and started to walk past them, one woman yelled "I know you can hear me!" (I wasn't wearing head/earphones) and the next thing I know, she cut me off and literally pulled my tote bag and slide a flyer in. I absolutely lost it - first of all, DON'T touch anyone you don't know or their belongings - and two - this is absolutely unhinged, insane behaviour, borderline harassment. I don't litter but in that moment I took the flyer out and ripped it into pieces and chucked it out of my bag in front of her. The interaction left me shaken. I could have pretended to be on a call but again - why should I have to do this?

Finally, addicts. The situation is sad but unfortunately, this is another group that's harder to ignore if you don't look busy / pretend to not be able to hear them. Walking past my local Tesco last week and a woman is parked outside, looking very said. She said to me "hello young lady, could you please help me with something?" I initially ignored this, but with my luck, I had to wait for a green man literally feet from where she was and she continued to call out to me, and I couldn't reasonably 'not hear' her given I had nothing in my ears and she was 2m away. Sure - I could have still ignored her (which I should have given what happened next), but she seemed genuinely sad so I went up to her and told her that if she was hungry, I'd buy her something to eat and drink from the Tesco. She said she wanted a Diet Coke and pack of cigarettes. I told her I'd buy the Diet Coke but I won't buy cigarettes. She called me a c*** so I turned around and left. She's in front of that Tesco now half the week and calls me a c*** each time I pass.

Also on yesterday's walk, I bought some fresh cherries from Borough Market and stepped to the side just before the bridge to adjust them in my tote bag and to pull out a handful for me to eat on my walk. I thought I'd take a moment and enjoy a view of the river and Tower Bridge, but as soon as I stopped another addict approached me for money. I quickly just left, irritated, as it was the only shady spot in a while, and again - the point was to simply pause and enjoy the walk, snack in hand.

All this does is either force me to put my headphones in, stare at the ground or hurry past things I'd like to take the time to enjoy. No one should have to take measures like these to avoid unpleasant interactions. I'd have loved to just pause on the bridge, take in the sights and sounds of the tourists and locals coming and going, especially whilst the weather is good. But standing still or taking a leisurely stroll without another person with you or "looking busy" makes you a target for people to bother you on the low end of the scale, and flat out harass you on the other, and forces you to react to it in one way or another. I really hate this. Is it not possible to just enjoy a walk or pause without being bothered?

Suspicious Birkenstock Sellers?

Hi folks,

I am in the UK have my eye on Birkenstocks for the summer and I've noticed that there are many listings for Birkenstocks with exactly the same text in German:

"Hatte die Schuhe nur einmal kurz an. Sind mir leider zu groß. Daher sind sie wie neu.

Neupreis X€.

Größe X"

This translates to "I only wore the shoes briefly once. Unfortunately, they're too big for me. Therefore, they're like new. Original price €X. Size X"

The problem is - these exact words are being posted by many different accounts, and ALL of them have 0 feedback, yet some of them get the 'frequent uploads' badge even though they might have only 1-2 listings. How is it possible for them to have the 'frequent uploads' badge if, presumably, their other listings get sold? Won't they eventually receive even auto-feedback?

The Birkenstocks are priced well - not rock bottom prices but decent enough - but the copy paste text, the fact that they're all different accounts, the 0 feedback - all very suspicious. Could this be some sort of counterfeit Birkenstock ring? I've found FOUR different examples from 4 separate accounts just in the last 5 minutes, see attached.

How to clean metallic leather?

Hi folks, I have these pink metallic leather Birks which o love. However the metallic pink straps are very dirty. Some of it is scratching and rubbing of the metallic coating, but a lot of the back patches you see are actually just dirt that comes off. I’d like to clean these straps up as much as possible but not sure how to go about it - what’s the best way to treat metallic leather? I thought about a toothbrush and water but I don’t want to scratch the leather further & leave watermarks behind (which has happened in the rain). I’m nervous to use standard leather cleaner as it’s not usually meant for metallic leather. Any advice on how to clean metallic leather?

PS I’m also looking to replace the footbed but I can’t really find anywhere in London or the UK to do this at a reasonable price. I found one website that charges £65 but I could get a brand new pair of Birks for that price, which isn’t sustainable. Thank you!

Please remove rude woman

ETA: YOU GUYS!!! I was at Wimbledon all day yesterday and could not easily get any of the versions to save to my phone without screenshotting, I can't believe how much this post blew up! As a relatively recently disabled person, I am new to navigating the world from this perspective and have 1000000% more appreciation for those with physical disabilities and how tough access can be. THANK YOU for all of the replies and for making me laugh with the joke ones. Thankfully, my friend in the chair also got her own picture and Hubert was an extremely nice and gracious man.

Hi folks! I am disabled and was with my friend in a wheelchair in the accessible section at Wimbledon when the lovely Hurkacz complimented my hat and agreed to take a selfie. The woman directly behind my hat rudely shoved my wheelchair friend away and joined. I don’t know her and she was so rude. Please can you remove the head of the woman directly behind my hat? I’m not worried about the rest of the crowd. Thank you!

New Flair Available: Fashion/Outfits!

Hello everyone, happy Wimbledon fortnight!

A new flair has been added to this community: Fashion/Outfits. Feel free to use this flair to share what you wore / are planning to wear to Wimbledon. There have been questions asking about what to wear to the Championships, so hopefully your contributions can help / inspire others. A few examples below from previous years (including one year where falling down the stairs led to a knee brace 🙃😅).

Some other thoughts/notes from my experience:

  • White is the traditional colour worn, but by no means is this strictly adhered to!
  • Long sleeves turned out to be a blessing for when you are in the sun for hours
  • Cotton/linen/natural fibres are highly recommended compared to synthetic if it's going to be hot the day you go
  • Most importantly, where what makes you comfortable & happy

A request for you: I LOVE seeing the creative hats at Wimbledon. Have you ever bought/made one? If so I'd love to see it & know how you made it!

*Random side fact, at the men's final once a man bumped into me which caused the Pimms in my hand to spill on my white dress. I looked up and that man was Hugh Grant. He apologised and offered me a napkin. I was too stunned to say or do anything other than to take the napkin. Unfortunately he gave me a paper napkin otherwise I may or may not have kept a fabric one...

Izmir recommendations - food, activities, + ideal place to buy Turkish clothing/linen?

Hi folks,

I am so happy to visiting Turkey again after many years (I've visited Istanbul a few times for work, but never anywhere else). I will be spending part of the trip in Izmir this time with my parents and sister, and am looking for some recommendations. Besides the main tourist things, is there any special place you enjoy about Izmir that may be off the tourist track?

I'm also looking to buy Turkish linen/cotton clothes (not designer necessarily). Is Izmir a good place to do that, or any Turkish ceramics? Or am I better off shopping for these things in the other places I am going (Bodrum, Cappadocia, Istanbul)? I hear that Bodrum is more expensive than Izmir.

I also love all kinds of Turkish food, especially meat and baklava, so if you have any recommendations for restaurants in any of those cities, I would be grateful to hear them. Much love, J.

Red Tour vs Green Tour in Cappadocia - which do you recommend?

Hi folks,

I'll be visiting Cappadocia for the first time (very excited!) next week and my father, mother & sister will be joining me. I have been to Istanbul several times for work but I haven't had the pleasure to explore other parts of Turkey, so I'm really excited for this trip.

With that said, I'm getting overwhelmed with the tour options, especially in Cappadocia. My parents prefer a guided tour rather than figuring things out themselves, but besides the actual sites that you'll see, I can't see between the Red (north) and Green (south) Cappadocia tour if one is better than the other if you only had the chance to do one tour - any recommendations? Which one of these is a must-do?

We will of course be trying for the balloons too!

The first stop of my trip will be London to Izmir (where my dad currently is for a conference), then 2.5 days in Bodrum (just my dad & I as we are beach lovers), then my mom and sister will fly in from India & the US respectively. We plan to do a day trip to Pamukkale, then travel to Cappadocia, Istanbul, and for me, back to London.

If anyone has any restaurant, shopping (not designer, just looking for good quality Turkish cotton / linen clothing), or anything else you recommend in those areas, please do let me know! Even if it is off the beaten track, as we will have a car in Izmir / Bodrum. Thank you.
