I have been flicking mint seeds in his yard all summer
There is a dangerous driver in my neighborhood. He absolutely flies down my street. There are frequently children playing on the sidewalks and running across the street between houses I’m frequently worried one of them is going to be hit. He also twice this year has blown through the stop sign nearly hitting my car. In April while walking my dog I saw this same car fly through the stop sign and pull into his garage. He may be a terrible driver but he had a beautiful lawn.
So, twice a day, I walk my dog past his house. This has always been the routine but now on the shelf next to the poop bags I have a package of peppermint seeds. As I walk past his house I subtly sprinkle or flick these tiny seeds into his lawn. For those who don’t know mint is a very prolific grower and an aggressive spreader. Even a tiny fragment of root can grow into a new plant. Once roots are in the soil it will continue to multiply until every las bit of root is removed. His once perfect grass has been covered in little plants all summer. It looks like he’s spraying and mowing but not pulling it up by the root so next year he’ll have twice as much.
Edit: Because this has been asked frequently I have tried to get a speed survey or speed bump installed but need 75% approval from the neighborhood and we fund it. Police have promised increased patrols which turns out to have been a single cruiser at 6AM
A witchy good time was had by all. Lake Sylvia State Park.
It was my first time biking in the Montesano area. Does this stump/tree have any nicknames?
Ripeness Variability in Blue Elderberry
I collected 6-8 bunches of blue elderberry off shrubs on the Olympic peninsula in Washington State yesterday. I chose mainly umbels of fruit that were chalky with surface yeast activity as an indicator of ripeness, but a number of these huge umbels also contained some clumps that had green spots.
I set aside most of those with green clumps and processed the rest - froze overnight on a sheet and then picked out all of the berries that had any green on them.
I then processed the ones left behind (shown in the bowl). Going to process seeds from these, not for consumption.
Questions:
What is the toxicity potential of leaving a few that have a wee green spot on one side of the berry from my tray that I’m intending to process into syrup? Pretty sure I got them all but some are purple with a green blush in one quadrant of the drupe.
Is there a processing method that would allow more partially green fruits to still be processed?
How I Approach Callery Pear
Shit eatin’ grin, and all. Gyrotrac GT200 go bbrrrrrrrttt.
Backyard of house i might buy…crazy roots all over
These roots are all over the backyard..it broke up the patio and there’s probably 2-3 large trees. Anybody have any idea how much it would cost to remove all this? I’m guessing the entire yard would need to be excavated.
Yo Dawg, We Heard You Liked Introduced Species
So we introduced a species to go on your introduced species! Urophora cardui on Cirsium arvense.
Here's my plant jerker in action.
I built this to test how strong a plant gets with physical movement. Over 40 days it jerked 250,000+ times. It ended up working and made the trunk much stronger.
Canadian Geese euthanization in Alabama.
Sorry if not allowed. Just concerned.

A neighborhood HOA has voted to euthanize a flock of Canadian Geese. They've done this before and another flock immediately replaced them.

I have no education in wildlife management, could anyone provide a list or resources that show alternatives to this?

Neighbor cut down a smaller Tree of Heaven without knowing what it was - How should I handle all the root suckers popping up on my side of the fence?
My neighbor had some thick foliage between her shed and my fence, and she had it all cleared out a couple months ago. Apparently there was a Tree of Heaven in there and the lawn guys just cut it to the stump. I'm going to talk to her about the proper way to kill it because I'm pretty sure she doesn't even know what it is. We've got black walnut trees in the area so it blends in pretty well.
Now I've got a bunch of little suckers popping up on my side of the fence and I'm not sure the proper way to handle them. I've been reading about the proper way to kill one of the trees and it seems I should wait until July before I start applying any herbicide for best effect. Until then, should I just let these things grow?
In terms of the original tree growing back, should that be treated with basal bark application? As you can see, they're still green so it's pretty young growth.
First few photos are the suckers in my yard, and the last two are the original plant growing back. Keen eyes my notice the spotted lanternfly nymphs crawling the trunk, so I've got to deal with that too. Hooray.
Very interesting exposed roots, Greenville SC
Definitely seems to be heavy erosion, but the tree is holding on tight.
Medicine Vial?
Found in garden. No clue how it got where it was sitting, but it’s clearly been buried for a while with that iridescent surface. Insulin maybe?
Hiking in merino tops in summer
hey all, i have this icebreaker merino-tencel lightweight longsleeve shirt, that just got destroyed on the bottom part during my last hike (Wiedweg, Germany, last week). it was worn under a heavyweight Sarma merino-poly hoodie, never direct contact with the backpack (Gossamer Gear Gorilla).
same thing happened with other merino blend shirts during summer hikes, where there was direct contact, desfruxtion happened faster, so i am (and my wallet is) kind of tired of buying a new shirt every season, but here comes my question: what else, if not merino? i just cannot stand the technical fabrics, already tried some (patagonia, arc'teryx, etc), and the feel of the fabric and the stench of it after a day just kills me.
what are you wearing for a multiday hike?
Disassembling Apple Grinder Shaft
I’ve got an old turn of the century apple grinder and press that I’m hoping to restore and of the critical tasks, refinishing the wood in the grinder head as well as replacing the sheet metal tooth sets are high on my priority list. I’ve got the assembly between the cast huge loose from the hubs (8 flathead countersink wood screws), but I’ve got to get either the flywheel and hub off one end or the spur gear and hub off the other end.
Trying to get an idea of best practices to remove the spur gear and hub assembly. Both are held on the shaft by what appear to be tapered shaft keys, but they’re shoulderless. I booped the keys on the spur gear side and the flywheel side with some aerokroil and the joints drank it up.
I’m guessing a heavy duty set of diagonal wire cutters to grab the key and a wedge to drive between the pliers and the face of the spur gear and hub is going to be the right approach but I’d love to hear alternatives if there are better options.
