Kiwi

Kiwi

Kid eats 6 kiwis in 3 days and declares kiwi to be her favorite fruit. She begs me to buy the package kiwi from Costco. Two days later she asks me not to pack any more kiwi in her lunch because she doesn’t like them anymore. I really should have known better. But now I have a dozen kiwis and no idea what to do with them besides snack on them myself.

I’m a reasonable baker, and willing to go get more ingredients as long as it’s something I will probably use in other recipes or doesn’t go bad quickly.

Rejection sensitive dysphoria resources for 6YO

My daughter is not yet diagnosed but if you spent any time with her you’d know what’s up. My daughter has been showing a lot of ADHD and I have witnessed rejection sensitive dysphoria hit her like a truck. This morning her dad said he wasn’t going to do Pokemon cards with her until he was done tidying up. This led to her sobbing to me that maybe dad doesn’t love her. Anymore.

When I’m experiencing RSD I will tell myself that my brain is being a little extra mean and it’s just playing tricks on me. That sort of worked for my daughter and I reminded her that her dad loves her and he’s just asking her to wait. After a bit she was feeling better.

Knowing how much pain RSD can cause I’m hoping for some resources with age appropriate strategies to managing it. As an ADHD Person myself I find RSD is the symptom that causes me the most distress. I’ve found strategies to get work done keep a house tidyish and keep my body relatively healthy but I have yet to find something that doesn’t make rejection feel like a punch in the gut.

I have been flicking mint seeds in his yard all summer

There is a dangerous driver in my neighborhood. He absolutely flies down my street. There are frequently children playing on the sidewalks and running across the street between houses I’m frequently worried one of them is going to be hit. He also twice this year has blown through the stop sign nearly hitting my car.  In April while walking my dog I saw this same car fly through the stop sign and pull into his garage. He may be a terrible driver but he had a beautiful lawn.
So, twice a day, I walk my dog past his house. This has always been the routine but now on the shelf next to the poop bags I have a package of peppermint seeds. As I walk past his house I subtly sprinkle or flick these tiny seeds into his lawn. For those who don’t know mint is a very prolific grower and an aggressive spreader.  Even a tiny fragment of root can grow into a new plant. Once roots are in the soil it will continue to multiply until every las bit of root is removed.  His once perfect grass has been covered in little plants all summer. It looks like he’s spraying and mowing but not pulling it up by the root so next year he’ll have twice as much.

Edit: Because this has been asked frequently I have tried to get a speed survey or speed bump installed but need 75% approval from the neighborhood and we fund it. Police have promised increased patrols which turns out to have been a single cruiser at 6AM

The book Piggies exists solely for Don Wood to show off how good he is at drawing hands.

The words are fine, nothing special but every page has detailed illustration of a pair of hands in a variety of poses. I think Don was just super proud of his skills.so his wife spent an hour or two writing a book that he could use to show off with.

Neighbor was giving this away for free. Was I entirely too ambitious?

I’ve really only attempted a few projects but seeing a vintage serger for free I couldn’t say no. This sucker is heavy and seems to be made to last. I found a tutorial online on how to thread it but there’s not a ton of info on how to use this.

ISO A non fiction fascinating history of mundane things

Recently I have read Spirals in Time (seashells), Pockets, word by word (writing of dictionary entries), the bee keepers lament (a year in the life of a commercial beekeeper) 10 birds that changed the world, and a history of the world in 6 glasses.

I would love more non fiction books that are histories of everyday items. How have shoes, colors, bugs etc changed the course of human history?

First attempts at cyanotype. How do I get better detail? The largest one had great detail of stem and leaf but got lost when I rinsed and oxidized the print?

Do I need to rinse more? Does water temperature matter? Each was exposed for about 10-12 minutes at 2 in the afternoon.

Why is watercolor so under represented in museums?

I mostly see oil paintings even in contemporary exhibits. I understand that oils take a staggering level of technical mastery and there weren’t a lot of other mediums that were considered both prestigious and portable. What I don’t get is why I see quite a few acrylic paintings but almost no watercolors. Watercolor is more difficult to master than acrylic and it’s at least 100 years older so I’d expect it to be more prestigious. But I cannot think of more than a handful of water color paintings I’ve ever seen in museums. I could not name a famous artist who uses acrylic but many renowned 20th century artists used acrylics.

Is this milkweed? Central Indiana

I got a bunch of seeds from a native plant society but was disappointed that it seemed like none of them sprouted.

The neckline of this dress puckers out. Would pinning the dress like this (inside out) and sewing be a decent way to solve it? Is there a better way?

What is making my tree sick and how can I save it?

Late winter I cut back all the little, dead white branches and sprayed the tree several times with copper fungicide. I did just notice some deep cracks in the trunk.

Central Indiana. Probably planted in 2022. Combination of sprinkler (when I water my grass) and hose.

Who is this lovely fellow who keeps coming to my feeder. Central Indiana.

At first I thought it was another house finch but the red is really intense and covers his whole torso. You can even see red on his rump.

Options for cat with frequent sneezing/bloody boogers

Domestic short hair 9 lbs 2 years old

When I adopted my cat she had an upper respiratory infection and was frequently sneezing (suspected feline herpes) but now each year late spring and mid fall she gets violent sneezes. The sneezes often escalate until her boogers are bloody. Probably due to swelling/irritation in her nasal cavities.

Besides the fact that the sneezes bother her it’s also super gross. I don’t necessarily want to go to the vet every time this happens. I wipe her nose with saline solution on a paper towel and lock her in the bathroom with me when I shower to make her breathe the steam.

If she was my human child I’d be giving allergy meds like Zyrtec in the spring and fall. is there a similar cat safe option I can give her a few weeks out of the year to help relieve the irritation?

Sugar snap peas

The peas in my garden are going gangbusters. This is just what I grabbed in five minutes and it’s early season I expect to get this level of harvest every day for the next month or so. Obviously I’m munching on plenty as a snack but I’m going to get sick of them plain/dipped eventually. What are some cooked options or more interesting ways to enjoy these?

How do a talk to my mom about AI on Facebook?

My (f35) mom (f70) frequently reposts AI videos and images, about a dozen a day. Generally it’s fairly harmless like cute baby owls or advice on planting native flowers that are not all native to the same region. I’ve told her several times that she’s posting things that are incorrect but presented as fact.

Yesterday she posted a video of several late night comedy hosts holding a sign. The video was obviously AI. I tried to tell her that posting real people doing something they didn’t do is unethical but she didn’t remove the video.

Now my biggest concern is that she is taking these all as absolute fact and is therefore highly susceptible to misinformation and disinformation.

Are there some decent resources online to teach boomers how to spot AI? How can I teach my mom modern media literacy?
