A lil Mai Tai using some new acquisitions
Picked up the J.M. Shrubb and Yes Cocktail Co. orgeat today at Bitters & Bottles in SF.
Made a half Mai Tai to try them out.
- 1/2 oz Appleton Estate Signature
- 1/4 oz Smith & Cross
- 1/4 oz RL Seale’s 12
- 3/8 oz lime juice
- 1/4 oz JM Shrubb
- 1/4 oz Yes Cocktail Co orgeat
I think I’m in love. The Yes orgeat has a bit of the marzipan flavor of Liber & Co but is less overpowering. JM Shrubb may be the most delicious orange liqueur I’ve ever tasted. I think I may just make the other half… perhaps I’ll change up the rums just to see how it goes, but I do like this particular rum combo.
Painkiller variant - Banane du Brésil & lime in place of OJ
Went to make a painkiller and realized I had half a lime from an earlier cocktail and figured I’d add back some sweetness with Banane du Brésil.
I used 4 oz dole pineapple juice, 1 oz each Scarlet Ibis and Flor de Caña 7, 1 oz Liquid Alchemist coconut syrup, 1/2 small lime (approx 1/2 oz juice), 1/4 oz Banane du Brésil. Shook hard with ice, strained into glass, and filled with pebble ice. Grated nutmeg on top.
TBH Wasn’t expecting it to turn out this tasty!
New to me Jamaican scotch bonnet sauce
Eaton’s Jamaican Scotch Bonnet Pepper Sauce
Moderately hot, but very tasty. Simple ingredients, just peppers, vinegar, starch salt, sugar, and citric acid. I don’t love the way the starch makes it kind of gloopy, but otherwise this is an A tier for me.
Tonight in Boston
Beautiful and fun night in Boston.
Made it to Wusong Road with kid in tow. He had a virgin piña colada. I had one drink from their specials menu, the Facundo Cutter, and another from the regular menu, the Mango Sticky Rice Colada. Both were delicious, as was the pu-pu platter we split.
Later I tried to go (sans kid) to Tiki Cove but it turned out to be in the thick of World Cup partying with a long line to get in so I just took a pic and moved on.
Great vibe, and losing didn’t stop the Scottish fans from partying at all!
$4 slice from a gas station in Vermont
The gas station has a small takeaway spot inside that’s part of a region chain of about 8 sit down restaurants and a few other gas station spots.
For a NY style slice in the middle of nowhere can’t really complain about the quality or price. And of course they reheat the slices on the pizza oven deck so they are actually pretty good when you get them.
Boston recos
I’ll be staying in Boston a couple nights in the next few weeks. I’ve been to Shore Leave, trying to decide between going back or someplace new. Wusong Road looks cool but might be a bit too far. I also see Tiki Cove and Tiki Rock, which look closer to the airport.
What do y’all recommend? If it matters, I’ll be solo and dropping by late in the evening on a Friday or Saturday. I’ll have one maybe two drinks, don’t care about food.
Mahalo!
Tiki Tak
I was looking for some lower ABV options and came across this vermouth based drink. Very refreshing and definitely has enough of the tropical spirit to scratch the tiki itch.
Mine was a double as follows:
- 2 oz Dolin dry
- 2 oz pineapple juice
- 1 oz lime juice
- 1/2 oz John D Taylor’s velvet Falernum
- 1/2 oz Giffard Banane du Brésil
- 4 dashes Peychaud’s bitters.
I shook everything except the bitters with crumbly ice and dirty dumped it into the glass, topped with crushed ice, and then dashed in the bitters, and let them trickle into the drink.
It was a nice drink for a warm afternoon in the backyard to sip while I (unfortunately) was doing some some work on my laptop.
In home caregiver for elderly mom
My 86 yo mom is losing her short term memory. She wants to stay in her house in St G which my sister and I are supportive of, but we live far away. She has a helper who does errands and stuff but we think she needs more, possibly even a live-in.
I don’t know where to begin looking for someone other than the big national agencies like Visiting Angels and I’m not sure I trust them.
Are there any local organizations we should be talking to?
Piña Colada for a warm desert afternoon
Visiting my mom in the Utah desert. It was blazing hot yesterday; today it’s just warm and a little stuffy.
Felt the need to have a cooler so I made this piña colada based on this spec from Difford’s: https://www.diffordsguide.com/cocktails/recipe/1526/pina-colada
- 2 oz rum (I used Planteray Barbados 5 year)
- 2/3 oz cream of coconut (I used Coco Reàl)
- 1/2 oz lime juice
- 2 2/3 oz pineapple juice
Instead of blending I shook it up with some pebble ice and a couple of larger cubes, then dumped everything but the larger cubes into the glass. I didn’t have any fresh pineapple on hand so I garnished with mint.
This spec isn’t too sweet which makes it refreshing on a day like today. And it goes down way too easy…
Celebrating Chartreuse Day with a Daisy de Santiago
Followed the Smuggler’s Cove specs:
- 1 oz lime juice
- 1/4 oz rich syrup
- 1/2 oz yellow Chartreuse
- 1 oz seltzer
- 1 1/2 oz lightly aged rum (I used Planteray 3 Stars)
Shake with ice and strain into double OF filled with crushed ice. Garnish with mint sprig.
This is basically a daiquiri with Chartreuse and a bit of a sparkle from the seltzer. And it is insanely delicious!
