Question about copious electricity on a world that’s basically tech level 6

That tech level is from a role playing game called Traveler, which is basically like D&D for sci-fi.

TL6 is more or less 1940s-1950s technology on earth.

I’d like to create a setting in a sci-fi story that is set in that tech level, but instead of using internal combustion engines, I’d prefer to depict engines as electric. And because the story would have a military dimension, the electricity can’t be generated and accessed at fixed points like the charging station for an electric car. It needs to be more easily accessible to an army in the field. (That’s not possible on earth — that’s why there are no electric tanks for instance.)

The problem is, where is the electricity coming from? I don’t think this would have been practical on earth in the 1940s to 1950s — it’s just too difficult to generate all that electricity and store it in batteries.

But what would need to change about the planet to make it more electricity rich? So that it is available to run the engines? The planet itself needs to have an atmosphere similar to ours, it can’t be some dead world.

Is there potential for such a planet? Or is this an impossibility?

Saw this absolute UNIT in the lower Hudson Valley area today

He was on a wood fence along a trail in lower Westchester county, below some trees and close to the Saw Mill River, politely enjoying a caterpillar. I could not believe my eyes. At first I thought it might be a cicada skin but as I got closer the amazing truth revealed itself.

I took quite a lot of photos and he very kindly permitted it, just occasionally twitching a leg or moving the caterpillar around a bit.

Or she, I should probably say — it’s my vague recollection that female spiders are much larger than males.

The body excluding legs was at least an inch long. With legs, easily 3.”

This is far and away the largest spider I’ve ever seen in the wild. That would mean the northeastern USA. Of course I know there are far larger spiders in other parts of the world, but this guy took my breath away.

Dark fisher spider?

Follow someone, then you get buried in their TikToks

Ok maybe someone knows how to resolve this. Whenever I follow someone, my scroll then becomes completely dominated by their old TikToks. Sometimes it’s so bad I then unfollow them.

Is there some way to tell TikTok not to do that? Then only their new posts go into my scroll.

Ghost DM notifications

Recently IG has been putting a red dot on my DM button at the bottom of the screen. So I click it to see the new DM, but there are no new dms. Also no new requests.

Just checking to see if it’s just me or a recent bug on the site. Thanks.

R rated CLL question

This question relates to sex and CLL — so if you don’t want to deal with that, scroll on!

I have CLL, stage 0. Was diagnosed about 10 months ago. Every once in a while have had some slight pains in my head.

I was having sex on Monday. When I climaxed, I had a sudden and splitting headache that coincided with the orgasm. I was clearly in pain and my wife was very upset. The headache subsided but my head felt sore the rest of the night.

But then, on Tuesday woke up with a severe headache that kept me in bed all day. Still painful Wednesday morning, gradually subsided Wednesday afternoon, but even now, Thursday evening, I still have a little soreness in my scalp/head/neck, but am so much better than Monday-Tuesday.

Saw my PCP about this today and he wasn’t overly concerned. One thing he said was, the severe headache might be related to the CLL. That I wasn’t expecting, so I thought I’d ask here to see if this has been experienced by others as well.

I can understand why many of you wouldn’t want to respond even if you have experienced this of course — it’s a very personal and embarrassing issue.

“The Field Where I Died,” S4 E5

Hi, it’s me again, the guy who watched “The X Files” back when it first aired in the ‘90s and is now watching one ep a week.

I haven’t posted in a long while but here I am, like a bad penny, back because I’m curious to see other people’s take on “The Field Where I Died,” the fifth ep of the fourth season. Interestingly, I kind of remember watching this, thirty years ago, because I watched “Space: Above and Beyond” and liked Kristen Cloke on that. But I remember feeling a bit queasy watching her in this, though I couldn’t quite put my finger on why - especially when she breaks into her Gilbert Gottfried impression.

Thirty years later I think I have it figured out. I googled it and apparently Morgan and Wong wrote this ep for Cloke and (dramatic music) Cloke was engaged to Morgan at the time. I didn’t know that in 1996 (no Wikipedia, no fandom sites).

So it was written for a producer’s girlfriend, to “show her range.” Basically a glorified demo reel.

Don’t get me wrong, I actually like Cloke. She’s beautiful and I think she’s good. But she’s not “tour de force” good, and she would never have got this if she weren’t engaged to Morgan. (I wonder what Anderson and Duchovny made of it.)

So there’s that, but the ep just feels kinda … flimsy, because at heart, what is it? — it’s really nothing but Cloke and then Duchovny holding forth about how they were this person or that in previous lives. “The Yankees, ah see them advancin’ across yon field.” Not, IMO, compelling tv.

I watch the X Files, so I’m interested in supernatural storytelling, but I’m not a fan of every branch of supernatural storytelling. Especially not “past lives,” which feels like the soap opera/romance novel department of the supernatural.

Oh, and … Duchovny cry-face. ALWAYS a big nope for me.

I won’t go so far as to say the ep made me “mad, mean mad, son,” but I was impatient for it to end — not the way I usually feel about my rewatch of TXF. But if you like this ep, show me the error of my ways and put me in my place. If, like me, you also dislike it, let us titter together, like Mary Richards at Chuckles’ funeral….

(By the way if this or any other ep I post about is a taboo subject or a well-trodden battlefield, apologies for that.)

U.S. passport renewal weirdness

I last got my pp renewed in 2016 so this year it was time for renewal. Went through it and received my new pp yesterday.

Ok why does it have that weird plastic card embedded in it with my info? Previous pps have always just had a regular paper page.

I can see that thing easily coming loose or even falling out.

Why???

People and pets

People and pets has never found the faces of my kids in my photo album.

Of course those are the people I most want tiles for — my kids!

I go into “add people” but they never are there either.

And since my three kids are adult now, there can’t be any complication due to that.

Stage zero but many aches and pains. Normal?

I was diagnosed as stage 0 CLL last summer. A return to my hematologist this past winter had me at 0 still, but higher, so my doc has me coming back for another test which will be next week.

Meanwhile lately I’ve felt very tired a lot and I have body aches almost like when you have a fever (but no fever). Also a feeling of heaviness/thickness under my jaw, but I’ve felt around and don’t seem to have swollen lymph nodes (but I’m not an expert at finding them).

Is this what stage 0 feels like? It’s very hard to get good info on the internet. Thanks.

Stopped taking melatonin

I’ve been taking it in small doses to help sleep for a few years. Nothing heavy, just 2-5mg a night.

I decided to try the magnesium on the feet thing instead. So I stopped taking melatonin.

Since I stopped I have a weird tingly sensation and a feeling of fullness in my head, also slight headachiness.

Has anyone else had anything similar? I googled and supposedly there are no “withdrawal” symptoms.

I’m stage zero. Should I tell family?

In the late summer of 2025 I was diagnosed with CLL, stage zero. Had a follow-up test in March, still stage 0 but increased levels of whatever it is that means you have CLL (sorry not up on the terms), so I have another test in June.

I haven’t told anyone yet — I’m 62, have three adult children and a partner. No longer have an office job but run a sole proprietor small business.

Should I tell anyone? I mean I know a lot depends on dynamics of relationships and I’m obviously not asking about that, but I mean a medical reason.

I think it’s not hereditary (at least my hematologist said so), so there doesn’t need to be any testing of my children.

I’ve been told while at stage 0, you just lead a normal life although it’s a good idea to get a bit healthier (made some changes in that regard already). So does my partner “need” to know?
