Falkon cookies?

My old stand-by for getting cookies in yt-dlp was ye olde --cookies-from-browser BROWSER. I know Falkon is built on top of Chromium, but passing --cookies-from-browser chromium or --cookies-from-browser chrome doesn't work. You folks have any ideas for working around that?

Lil tech support for optimising TOR for yt-dlp & Freetube?

As someone who dabbles in a lil datahoarding here and there, YouTube hates my IP. Regularly can't download more than 3-5 YouTube videos with yt-dlp, semi-regularly Freetube also won't work for an hour or two. I'd like to fix this without paying for a whole VPN.

Found this, and copied the section about configuring your /etc/tor/torrc file to be better for yt-dlp & Freetube. Got to the step where he says to run TOR in browser, and got this:

Jul 02 10:28:21.452 [notice] Tor 0.4.9.11 running on Linux with Libevent 2.1.12-stable, OpenSSL 3.6.3, Zlib 1.3.2, Liblzma 5.8.3, Libzstd 1.5.7 and Glibc 2.43 as libc.
Jul 02 10:28:21.452 [notice] Tor can't help you if you use it wrong! Learn how to be safe at https://support.torproject.org/faq/staying-anonymous/

Jul 02 10:28:21.463 [notice] Opened Socks listener connection (ready) on 127.0.0.1:9050
Jul 02 10:28:21.463 [warn] Error setting groups to gid 43: "Operation not permitted".
Jul 02 10:28:21.463 [warn] If you set the "User" option, you must start Tor as root.
Jul 02 10:28:21.463 [notice] Closing partially-constructed Socks listener connection (ready) on 127.0.0.1:9050
Jul 02 10:28:21.464 [warn] Failed to parse/validate config: Problem with User value. See logs for details.
Jul 02 10:28:21.464 [err] Reading config failed--see warnings above.

The "add underscores to the places we told you to" bit is very straightforward, but the issues with setting groups and "User" options... I'd appreciate some guidance on that. And/or general advice as far as all this goes.

xfce heretic has questions about Falkon

Far as I can tell, this is the subreddit to go to for Falkon support. If I'm wrong on that front, my bad & please redirect me.

Anyway, amongst other things, I wanna use Falkon to get cookies for archiving YouTube channels with yt-dlp. First two questions I have on that front are:

  1. Came across this. Extensions/plug-ins are famously somewhat dicey in other browsers, and I'm especially on edge after hearing about the AUR debacle. That being said, I have heard that Falkon handles extensions/plug-ins differently, and you folks clearly have your own repository for them anyway. So I'd appreciate an ELI5 of what measures are taken to keep Falkon extensions/plug-ins "safe" for users, especially concerning what's done to vet contributors/maintainers.
  2. My old stand-by for getting cookies in yt-dlp was ye olde --cookies-from-browser BROWSER. I know Falkon is built on top of Chromium, but I remember from playing around with it years ago that just passing --cookies-from-browser chromium didn't work. You folks have any ideas for working around that?

Is there a name to the type of pattern/design of this 90s polo knit?

Here's a polo knit my dad got back when he was a Yugo refugee in 90s Germany. It's great. I wish I had twenty, thirty of these. But I dunno where to even start looking in terms of search terms, let alone actually finding this kind of thing!

Ended up going to the local swanky menswear shop, shirt in hand. Ran into the head buyer for the company. They'd never heard of the company (Monello), but could confirm that it was a 90s shirt based on the cut. Apart from that, what this overall design/print would be called, where it was popular, so on - couldn't say. Hopefully you gents can succeed where they failed!

Concerned about starting swimming

First off, no medical conditions, don't drink, don't smoke, 28yo man with permanent retainers on both jaws.

I've really started looking at seriously making swimming my thing, far as cardio goes. Always liked doing it casually, there's a pool literally next door with a good schedule... All great. But I've heard a lot about swimmer's mouth. I'd like to build up to daily swims, maybe even training for open water swimming in the longer term - all that means a lotta time in chlorinated water! I'd appreciate some dental professionals' thoughts on likely this is to be a problem - ie., is this something that rarely comes up, only comes up if you're putting in Michael Phelps-type hours in the pool, etc. - and what I can do to prevent/manage it.

Divination and the occult in Rumelia?

Read that tarot wasn't a thing in the Ottoman Balkans, is there any good reading on things like divination, occult, or even ancestor worship in that context?

Iberian sartorial tradition?

You hear plenty about English, French, and Italian sartorial houses, styles, so on. Online, at least, people get kinda crazy with the Italian styles, dividing them even further into Roman, Milanese, Florentine, Neapolitan... Not saying that's the case, not saying it's not, I wouldn't know - my point is that it's all very well-documented and known.

But what about Spain and Portugal? Did they have their home-grown styles, or was it mostly just spins on the better-known styles? I know especially Portugal was fairly francophile, back then... (I'd love to know about how this played out in Latin America, as well, but I'm guessing that's its own can of worms...)

Black answer to Dashiell Hammett?

Something written & set in the 20s-50s by a black men with first-hand experience of the scene. I've heard Chester Himes be explicitly compared to Hammett - very favourably, too! - but I'd love to have some more. Shoot, if you have good bibliographies/studies of this kind of author, I'd like that too! Either side of the law is good, by the way; if you're short on detective fiction but long on protagonists that'd give West Indian Archie a run for his money, I'm here for it...

Which of the classical writers are most accessible?

A/the major reason I'm interested in learning Persian is to inhale its rich literary tradition. Obviously, I have to pay some dues for that; graded readers, so on, so forth.

But a guy can dream, and plan ahead! There's so many interesting poets from yesteryear to check out; apart from of course Rumi & Hafez, picking just a random names from my bookmarks we have Khaqani, renowned for writing about his adventures abroad and prison poetry. How do you not wanna read everything someone like that put out? However, I'm gonna go ahead and guess that of the three names I just dropped, at least one is known for getting pretty complicated in their writing. So far, the only lead I've got is that Qabus-nama should probably be one of the first ones I go through, since the Wikipedia article points out that it was made deliberately accessible and straightforward.

Apart from that, what would some of your suggestions be for a "curriculum" of classical Persian authors/works, from most to least accessible? (I'm aware of things like Chai & Conversation's poetry course; thanks but no thanks.)

Is the "Turkish situation" representative of the rest of Turkic languages' development as well?

By "Turkish situation," I mean how in the last century, the Turkish language has gone through several reforms/standardisations, to the point that not only is reading anything before the 1920s(-ish) apparently a challenge/impossible without specialised training even for native speakers, but even speeches Atatürk made have had to be "translated" a couple times as the language reforms went on!

I don't know how drastic all this really is - maybe it's just a question of outdated vocabulary. But asking about how far back Azerbaijani speakers can go in their reading, they say that reading 14th-century poets is just a matter of vocabulary. Kind of surprising, for languages that are often reported to have Ukrainian-Russian/Dari-Farsi levels of mutual intelligiblity. So what's the deal? Is Turkish the exception or the rule, when it comes to Turkic-language speakers reading older classics?

How far back can I go, when it comes to reading Azeri?

Thinking of learning the language. After hearing how Turkish language reforms in the 1920s-30s made it so contemporary Turkish speakers can't really understand Ottoman works, I'm wondering whether your language went the same way. If I learned modern Azeri, would I be able to read Fuzuli right off the bat? Or do even native speakers need adapted versions to read works that old?

At what point is it safe to assume your heritage language won't clash with learning another language in the same family?

Recently been brushing up on my BCMS. I'd say I speak it fairly well; I can converse with strangers who are native speakers with no problems (and even plenty of compliments!) as long as the subject matter doesn't get too technical. I can understand anything I hear, even if it's very technical - sitcoms to politics, all good. Reading is a bitch, especially in but unfortunately not limited to Cyrillic, and that's what I'm focusing on brushing up on right now. Writing is fine as long as I have spellcheck...

I was starting to learn Russian right before deciding I really should finally get this reading thing together, and that'd hopefully help expand my ability to participate in more technical/academic conversations, and help with my spelling. But I'm realising especially with trying to come to grips with Cyrillic, I might be shooting myself in the foot a bit here. Especially since it seems a significant portion of mid-twentieth BCMS writing seems to have consciously borrowed from or downright aped Russian/other Slavic languages... I have plenty of other languages I wouldn't mind learning, so apart from the nagging feeling of being a quitter, it wouldn't bother me too much putting Russian on the shelf.

But when would it be safe to pick up another Slavic, in my situation? Am I overthinking it and should just keep on with Russian?

Exporting cookies without an extension?

Doing the whole --cookies-from-browser thing doesn't seem to be worth it, anymore; after 10 or so downloads, it's a wrap. Hit the FAQ, found what I believe to be the most relevant bit. Which says:

> Do NOT use the --cookies COOKIEFILE --cookies-from-browser BROWSER method (as described in the above FAQ link) to export your cookies to a cookiefile. This will export all of your regular browser cookies, but not the cookies from this private/incognito YouTube session. Instead, use one of the browser extensions recommended in the FAQ.

I'd really rather not install any more extensions than I have to, especially with one of those extensions turning out to be malware (which I know management was one of the first to warn about, I'm just explaining why I'm not a fan of extensions generally!). That FAQ does say "one way to do this" - any others?

Can I get some help navigating the ins & outs of gallery-dl?

Hoping some veteran data hoarders can help smooth out some of the kinds I've had exploring gallery-dl the first time. So far I'd like to know, for archiving X:

  1. Any way to make the destination directory as you set it? Something like -D [insert bash magic to mkdir desired folder here...], instead of what I'm currently doing ( mkdir DIR; gallery-dl -D /path/to/DIR)?
  2. Set it up so that it downloads the associated text as well? I know this is done in config file(s), but I'm A) not sure if you're supposed to make the relevant folders/files yourself or not, as I can't find them, & B) listing -K as described here isn't working for: https://x.com, x.com, https://twitter.com, twitter.com, "https://x.com". So clearly I'm missing something.

Probably unnecessarily scared of wget's spider function

Trying to find a way to have wget check (maybe in the background?) the size of a website before I attempt to archive it. So if I wanted to run wget -m -k https://example-web.site, I want a script that'll guesstimate how much space it'll take. I found this, with this as the main script; dunno why you'd install the script when you can just copy-paste it into an executable file, but maybe I'm missing something.

So I was about to do that, when I came across this:

> ...--spider option i think unexpectedly deletes all files on disk and so my download of many Gigabytes and thousands of files was being accidentally deleted by this feature. so i run the command in a temporary directory to stop this behavior from accidently deleting files.

And now I'm petrified. Please advise!

Apparently that's damn near the anthem "za nas bošnjake" as one relative put it, but I just heard about this song. It's a very nice song, don't get me wrong, but what's the significance/history behind it?
