My doctor saw my BMI before they saw me..
I went to the doctor this week because I’ve been struggling mentally and wanted labs done to rule out things like thyroid issues or vitamin deficiencies before assuming it’s just depression.
For context, I’ve spent the last 5 years losing 190+ pounds, 60ish of that over the last year alone on Tirz. I’m currently 5’7” and weighed 163 lbs at the appointment (end of the day, had already eaten 2x, constipated, etc).
They had me fill out the depression screening and said I have mild depression. I’m already in therapy and actively working on my mental health/body dysmorphia, so I’m not ignoring it.
This wasn’t my usual doctor because she was booked out too far, so I saw someone else in the office, they agreed to labs and instead of really discussing my mental health concerns, the appointment immediately turned into “you need to lose weight,” “you’re not eating right,” and “you need more exercise.” The frustrating part is they never actually asked what I eat or how active I am.. they just assumed based on my BMI. I’ve been going to this same office since I was 354 lbs, so my history and progress are literally in my records already. When I explained my weight loss history, the doctor actually just said “wow that’s crazy” and moved on.
I already struggle with body dysmorphia after massive weight loss, and honestly the appointment sent me spiraling. I looked at my BMI on the paperwork afterward and it’s 25.5… literally 0.5 into the “overweight” category.
Has anyone else experienced this after major weight loss/on tirzepatide? Especially the mental side of it?
