EMF recovery

Working on EMF research and received 2 Suillus cultures from a different university. Subcultured liquid to liquid from both bottles at separate times, and both appear to have gotten similar contamination - maybe present in low levels and began to sporulate when opened for subculturing?

Main issue: i need to try to isolate the Suillus from the asco spore contam. The sister university reached out and told me they need some back as it was the last of their archive.

Best approach in your opinion? I was thinking about carefully retrieving the suillus hyphal masses and rinsing extensively with sterile DI, then adding sections onto agar...

Pot too big?

Finally keeping an orchid alive this time! Ive been wanting to get it out of this plastic cup it came in that i punched extra holes in. Is the pot i have too large for it? Its about 4cm larger than root ball. I worry about not being able to see roots for waterings 😬

Stapelia giantea warts

Newly rooted Stapelia gigantea. Noticed these wart like growths when I got the cutting, but recently.they have developed this light brown hue to them. Mother plant had mealy bug problem, but I cleaned the cutting thoroughly and havent seen any signs of them. Maybe from past infection sites that have healed over? Im mostly worried it is first signs of fungal infection :((.

Newly rooted (about a month or so), only have watered a couple times. In a gritty succulent soil mix - succ mix amended with sand and fine perlite.

Repot or too soon?

I recently picked up my first polly, and I really want to repot it. The current substrate is mostly potting soil and I think coco coir, no perlite or any other coarse granules. I think she would do well with a chunkier mix along with some sphagnum moss (i live in a desert) but im worried about transplanting too early causing shock. When I purchased the plant a week ago, it was super wet and its bottom two newest leaves were yellow so I chopped them off. The soil has only dried about a half inch. Would you repot or wait a few weeks for acclimation?

Coprinopsis sect. micacei

Coprinopsis micaceus, or Mica cap, is a wide spread saprophytic fungi within the Psathyrella family and are found across the Unites States. They are typically found in these cespitose clusters near decaying wood from spring to winter. This particular cluster has been flushing on buried roots since spring has begun. This species also is characterized as an ink cap meaning it liquefies, or deliquesces, in order to spread its spores - see the 3rd photo.

New Mexico Specific Fungal Fun!

Hello everyone!

I wanted to make this page as there isn't a NM specific mushroom/fungi subreddit (not a huge shocker lol). Fungal species of NM are highly overlooked as there is quite the stigma that fungi doesn't grow in dry climates such as ours. My goal for this page it to spread awareness about native NM fungal species, help document abundance and biodiversity through citizen-led science, and work with local communities to teach others about the wonderful world of fungi!

If you think fungi are cool, want to share your fungal finds, or just simply want to talk fungi, join in the fun!
