How do you deal with pre-competition nerves/jitters right before performing?

I compete at a high level and no matter how much I prepare, I still get hit with nerves right before it's go-time — racing heart, tight chest, mind going blank for a second. It's not debilitating, but I know it's not helping my performance either.

Curious what's actually worked for people — athletes, performers, public speakers, anyone who deals with high-pressure moments regularly. Do you use breathing techniques, visualization, a pre-performance routine, reframing the anxiety itself, or something else entirely? And did it take practice to make it stick, or was there something that just clicked?

Looking for what's worked in real situations, not just theory.

Graduates with a Business Administration degree (Professional Sales concentration) — how did it work out for you?

Hi everyone! I'm a high school senior (international student-athlete, planning to play college hockey in the US) trying to decide on a major. I'm strongly considering Business Administration with a concentration in Professional Sales.

For those who went through this program (or something similar):

  • How did coursework prepare you for actually landing your first sales job?
  • Did you go into B2B/tech sales, or something else? What roles/industries?
  • Was the "Professional Sales" concentration specifically useful, or was it mostly generic business classes with a sales label?
  • How much did internships/networking matter vs. the degree itself?
  • What's starting comp usually like, and how did it grow over time?
  • Any regrets — things you wish you'd done differently (certifications, electives, extracurriculars)?

I'm a strong communicator, comfortable with people, but weaker on the quant/technical side — trying to figure out if this path plays to those strengths or if I'm missing something. Would really appreciate honest experiences, good or bad!

MIS grads — how was the major, and did it actually lead to a good job/salary?

Hi everyone — high school student here, seriously considering Management Information Systems as my college major (partly for career reasons, partly because it's STEM-designated).

Would love to hear from people who actually went through the MIS route:

  • How was your overall experience in the program — course load, difficulty, was it actually interesting to you?
  • Did you find a job in your field after graduating, and how long did the search take?
  • What was your starting salary, and roughly what are you making now (if you don't mind sharing)?
  • Any regrets, or anything you wish you'd known before picking MIS?

Trying to get a realistic picture beyond just BLS stats and university brochures. Any input — positive or negative — is genuinely appreciated. Thanks!

How did you stop seeking approval and validation from others and build real self-confidence?

I've realized a lot of my decisions and mood depend on how others react to me — what people think, whether I get approval, whether I'm "enough" in someone else's eyes. It's exhausting and it's holding me back from just being myself.

I want to hear from people who've actually worked through this: What was the turning point for you? Was there a specific mindset shift, book, therapy approach, or daily practice that helped? How long did it take before you noticed a real difference — not just intellectually understanding it, but actually feeling different inside?

Not looking for generic "just love yourself" advice — genuinely curious about what worked in practice for people who've been where I am.

How did you actually improve your hockey IQ?

I've been working on my game and want to get more intentional about developing hockey IQ specifically — reading plays before they happen, anticipating where the puck's going, making faster decisions under pressure, that kind of thing.
For those of you who feel like your IQ improved a lot at some point — what actually moved the needle? Was it watching film a certain way, playing more small-area games, a specific coach who drilled it into you, studying other sports, chess, anything mental-training related? Or did it just come from reps and experience over time?
Curious what worked for you, especially if there was a specific habit or exercise you can point to rather than just "play more hockey."
