Sci-fi Spacecrab resin sculpt for tabletop, by Massicotte Creative

Space travellers have often pondered what miracle or misadventure of technology was the origin of the omnipresent spacecrab. Neither is their purpose entirely clear, nor their reason for rapid proliferation. They're often encountered slowly scuttling through salvage sites or mining operations and scrounging on bits of scrap, although their tastes appear indiscriminate.

Sci-fi bomber miniatures for resin 3D printing - by Massicotte Creative (OC)

These new bombers I'm designing started from the same simple diamond-shaped hull, with the goal of seeing how far I could push different roles without losing a common design language.

One thing I've been trying to get better at is letting a design evolve instead of forcing the first idea to work.

These bombers started from exactly the same primitive shape, but from there I kept asking how changes in proportion, cut lines and mass distribution could suggest different operational roles.

The interesting part wasn't the detailing, it was testing and rebuilding until each version felt like it had a clear purpose.

The goal for me isn't just to invent interesting shapes, it's to refine them until they feel inevitable. I want designs to feel like they live in their world, like they had to be that way.

I'm curious how other people approach branching designs. Do you like lots of overlap like the Empire or very different looks like the Rebels? Do you duplicate an existing model and iterate, or completely restart each variant?

Sci-fi Stealth bomber model for tabletop gaming, by Massicotte Creative [OC]

Fleet Registry.

Deep Strike Platform.

Classification: Long-Range Strike Craft.

The Operational doctrine for this stealth bomber prioritizes emission control, signature reduction and precision engagement beyond the fleet's defensive perimeter.

As the expedition drags on far longer than expected and casualties mount, the need arises for trained pilots to avoid detection as much as possible.

So the DSP mk 1 was developed for sustained manufacturing and lifespan with great success.

This is how I approach fleshing out details and modules for my designs. Do you have a different approach?

This was a pivotal moment for me as a spaceship designer

It's been quite the year learning how to take a sketch of a spaceship to a detailed resin print you can turn over in your hand. It feels like wizardry ✨

Rail corvettes for tabletop wargaming in the style of Homeworld

Spent so many months getting these models mathematically perfect in CAD software, but also tuned as shapes to have a satisfactory balance. The rail corvette is a design that ended up in an interesting place as it came later in the process and evolved out of the shared language of the other ships. Something clicked when it got those kind of shield skates tho. Was looking at mecha and they also have awesome plates and armor.

3d model of Corvette spaceship made with CAD

When I started getting into 3d printing I had no idea how small and detailed a piece the common resin machine can spit out. These guys can balance on your fingertip, but shortly I'd like to try some much larger oversized prints. What do you think of the design, and whats more interesting to you big foot sized models or tiny miniatures?

This is a render from blender cycles while I got some nice photos taken of the fleet I designed in CAD. No AI used.

3d wallpaper of frigate warships, by me

I rendered the piece in Blender to show the medium range of combat ships for my project Nullvector in a cinematic setting with full paintjobs and liveries.

The base models were created as CAD sculpts for 3d printing in Plasticity. No AI, just painstakingly detailed by hand out of love for cool spaceships. Hope you enjoy, let me know what you think!

3d - spaceship CAD model miniature - battleship, by Me

When I was designing this battleship I wanted it to have that broad wing stance so that it felt grand, like an eagle soaring over the fleet, but also brutal and militaristic in articulation.

This model and the rest of the fleet was created in Plasticity (CAD) and then rendered in Blender cycles. There are physical resin prints on of them but I'm still in the process of getting good photos.

Check out this spaceship cinematic in the style of Homeworld and Star Wars

In a distant galaxy a space expedition fleet is lost in space without a way to chart a path forward. They discover that the fabric of spacetime holds the memories of ships that have passed before, and possibly a path forward to salvation: the nullvector protocol. Each flagship captain will manually guide the fleet through hyperspace by reacting to these pathways using neuralink technology and gruelling conditioning.

This is Nullvector - a science fiction epic about navigation beyond knowledge, ingenuity in the face of adversity, and trust in the human spirit to prevail against all odds in the vast void of space.

This Battleship went through a dramatic design process to arrive at this distinct "bird of prey" look

The Battleship for the expedition fleet went through a pretty dramatic design process to arrive at this distinct "bird of prey" layout that incorporates the faction's shape language.

Love to hear your thoughts!

Star wars and Homeworld inspired these spaceship minis

My dream for the ship models of Nullvector is to capture some of the feeling of playing with Star Wars micro machines as a kid, or playing Homeworld for the first time.

These were some inspirations for paintjobs featuring the assault frigates.

I did a paintjob on these space fighter craft models

Strikecraft have a special role in a fleet's design as they represent the most human-scale design elements and the most agile wing of a combat fleet.

In Nullvector they retain some aspects of aerodynamics and gravity-bound profiling to appear intuitively sleek and nimble. We have strong associations with real air fighters, and the design constraints on these aircraft are strong signals for sci-fi ships that share similar roles.
