User Who Blocks Lots of People Sharing News Articles

Hi all!

Was curious for some advice from any mods out there who allow news articles in their communities but do not allow the same articles to be posted twice.

We have a user in our community who likes to post a lot of news articles, but they also appear to be a prolific blocker of users, far beyond what most would consider normal.

As a result, a large number of people in our community are not seeing the articles this user is posting, and since we have rules about the same article/content not being reposted, when those blocked users go to try and post the news article themselves (thinking it has not yet been posted) we are obliged to remove it since it was already shared in the community.

We have been wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what steps you took to mitigate the problem.

We are considering asking this user to unblock less troublesome people, or asking them to not share as much news in the sub, or possibly even setting up a queue so we can repost what news articles they share ourselves as mods so everyone can see them and interact with the content.

We understand some people need to be blocked, and we don't want to squelch this user needlessly, but we also have a large portion of our community unable to see or discuss these news articles.

Any suggestions or experiences you can share would be great as we debate what to do about this.

Thank you!

Edit: Appreciate all the feedback, thank you. We're going to reach out to this user, let them know they are causing an issue and see where that leads us. We may setup a "holding queue" if needed to help deter them from bogarting news articles if they persist in blocking people and we might even escalate it to preventing them from posting news links at all if needed. Have a great day all!

🎉 r/halifax 175k Members Appreciation Post 🥳

Just a small note from the mod team to all of you to mark our crossing of the 175,000 member count! 🎉🍻

We crossed the 150k threshold just over one year ago, so adding roughly another 25k members in that short of a span is a great accomplishment for the community. Our post, comment and engagement numbers continue to grow year over year!

Our sub would be nothing without you, our users.

You are what makes this place an informative resource, a welcoming place for our community and a fun place to hang out. You are what makes r/halifax great! 🙌💖

Thank you to everyone for all your interesting contributions, provocative debates, positive vibes, constructive feedback, not-so-constructive feedback and everything in-between. We are thrilled to see the sub thriving and heading in the right direction!

We'll see you at 200k! 🚀📈

Thank you,

Your r/halifax Mod Team

Best Reusable K Cup for Keurig K-3550 Office Coffee Machine

Hi all,

Looking to upgrade my work coffee/save some $$$ by switching to some nice ground coffee to use with the Keurig K-3550 Single Serve Commercial Coffee Maker here in my office.

I could bring in a small pour-over setup if needed, but I am trying to simplify if possible.

Was wondering if anyone here has experience with using a reusable K Cup with the K-3550 and can recommend one for me.

I know that I'll have to open the pod drawer after each brew to retrieve my reusable pod, I'm more interested in performance/reliability/best extraction in terms of a recommendation.

Thank you! ☕

r/halifax Pet Photo Jamboree - June 2026 Edition

Welcome to the first ever r/halifax Pet Photo Jamboree!

This monthly thread will be a place to showcase photos of your pets/animal friends for all of r/halifax to see and admire!

Is this a contest? Yes! But there's no voting, everybody wins and the only prize is knowing we all saw how cute your pet is!

Does this mean I can't post pet pics in Friday Positivity anymore? Absolutely not, we still want them there too! We just wanted a dedicated place for people to post their pets for all to enjoy.

Is it just for pets? No, if you have great wildlife photos, we want to see those too!

Show us your animals, people! 🐶😺🦜🐟🐍🐄🦂👽

Let's Talk About It: Emergency Alerts ⚠️

Now that Blake has been found, here's a space for people to discuss the pros and cons of these emergency alerts as desired without interfering with a post about an active search for a child.

Here's a place showing how many we have had compared to other provinces, historically:

https://www.alertready.ca/alert-count/

And here is a site that archives previous alerts for reference, searchable by area:

https://www.alertable.ca/

Are these useful? Or are they a nuisance? Can these be improved? Does the context of the alert matter?

Let's talk about it. 🍵

Free Food/Laundry/Shower Resources in HRM - June 2026

Hi all,

We have a lot of people in our community who are in need of a free meal or a helping hand occasionally.

We thought it would be nice to collect and post this information each month, which is graciously supplied by members of the Halifax Library. We'll see how long we can keep this going month to month.

Please share as needed with people you know who need help or take advantage of them yourself if you are in need.

The Feed NS Find Food site is also a very useful resource:

https://feednovascotia.ca/find-food/

Always remember there are kind, generous folks out there looking to help you out and you can get through whatever you are going through. 💖

And if anyone else has resources that belong here, please attach them as comments, the more the merrier.

Thank you!

Problem With Scheduled Posts and Events

Hey all,

We recently added fourth and fifth Scheduled Posts to our sub, but when I go to Scheduled Posts and Events to review/edit them and I click "Show More" to see them (since only the first three are shown by default), the table does not form properly to show me Posts 4 & 5.

As a result, I am not able to select Posts 4 & 5 to edit/delete.

I have tried multiple browsers and also tried clearing my browser cache, which has not helped.

Any ideas would be appreciated, thank you!

Gentle reminder that Alert Ready is doing a test of the emergency notification system today at 1:55 pm local time in most provinces, including Nova Scotia.

Given the very split reaction to other emergency alerts recently, we wanted to give people a heads-up so they can adjust their phone accordingly/prepare themselves as needed.

As is tradition, we will allow a post here for people to vent/joke/talk about the test once the test is complete. First one in gets to stay. No early birds!

We will not need a bunch of follow-up posts/memes about the test, one post is sufficient for this test, please and thank you.

It's that time of year folks, when more and more people from other parts of the country and the world debate moving here and use r/halifax to ask some basic questions about what life is like here and (hopefully) ask some specific questions they have about their plan to resettle here.

We've decided to make a new "Moving Here" flair to make it easier to find what other people have said in the past as well as to help people who don't care about these threads move along with their day.

This should also apply a small sticky with a link to past posts about moving to help people do a little more research on the matter if needed.

The flair and sticky are set to auto-apply to a variety of moving here styled posts, but it can always be applied manually if the automation doesn't catch it.

A reminder that we welcome people using the sub for local recommendations, advice and experiences in this fashion.

Thank you!
